  1. Lol...spoken like a true BDC veteran.
  2. There's no doubt he has completely failed to meet even the lowest expectations. Absolutely. It's just that the leap from "bad baseball player" to "bad person" isn't one I'm very comfortable making when the guy's major sin is being fat, which is something we knew coming in. Bottom line, it's a s***** situation all around, with the only bright spot being the way Shaw has seized his opportunity and run with it so far.
  3. I think the power will come eventually as well...for the moment I'm just really enjoying the player he's turned into, even though it's rather different from the player we thought he was going to be. A very good defensive SS who hits for a high average with a strong OBP, a lot of doubles, and good speed? That profile alone should make him a regular All-Star attendee for a long time. And if his expected ever shows up in games? ....dude, I've got chills.
  4. I expect "regression" in the sense that his 1.67 ERA will go up significantly sooner or later, but I do believe he can be a solid starter for us for a long time. I think it's safe to say we've already won the Lars Anderson trade.
  5. I blame the team far more for giving him that big contract. It's not like history of issues with getting/staying in shape were a secret before 2015, and his already-declining stats were there for all to see. Many of us saw disaster and an albatross contract on the horizon even before the Red Sox inked him...I just never imagined it would happen so quickly and dramatically.
  6. I'm sold on the offense and the 'pen so far...if the rotation can get its act together (looking at you Price, Buch, and soon E-Rod), I think this could be a dangerous team.
  7. Hey Kimmi, Just found this reply, and fair enough... I was going off what I read in this thread (where most of the responses seemed proportionate and reasonable), but it wouldn't surprise me to hear that Clay hasn't exactly been the homecoming king around here historically.
  8. It's really classic Clay, though...just when you're getting sick of his act and starting to think about whether and how soon you can eject him from the rotation, he demonstrates how good he's capable of being and gives you just enough to start believing again, even though you know it won't last...and the cycle continues. We've seen it year in and year out. I'll take it while it lasts, though. Hopefully this was the beginning of one of his trademark 12-start stretches of 2.50 ERA.
  9. For both guys? Maybe Betts, Rodriguez, Swihart, Owens, Espinoza, and the entire Salem roster doesn't get you hung up on.
  10. Young has a .795 OPS against lefthanders so far (which was higher before last night, of course)...obviously the sample size is still infinitesimal. I get that his usage has been frustrating and he doesn't look like a great fit for the current roster, but I don't think we need to jump on him every time he goes 0-4 against a LH starter or pinch-hits against a LH reliever and fails to get on base.
  11. Wright's continued dependability and HanRam's bomb were encouraging on an otherwise forgettable night. I feel like Hanley is due to get hot, which would be huge for this team.
  12. At least we have our ace on the mound.
  13. Papi, Shaw, Porcello, and Wright come to mind as worthy candidates. Is there a way to make this a poll (maybe one for position players and one for pitchers)?
  14. First of all, I completely misread the OP (though it says "2016" right there in the title) and assumed we were talking about whether or not to pick up his 2017 option, hence my reply. I did support picking up the 2016 option and still believe it was the right call. Other than that: -While Price and Buchholz are currently sporting similarly ugly ERAs, delving into more advanced stats would suggest that Price has actually pitched much better than his ERA would indicate (similar to Buchholz last April), while Clay's peripherals are scarier than the ERA. -People's perceptions of the two are rightly colored by the fact that Price has a lengthy track record of ace-like performance, while Clay has never managed this over a full season and has instead burned us time and again. -I might have missed it, but I don't think anyone said anything remotely approaching "jesus christ clay sucks. DD is an idiot for picking up his option. clay is a bitch"..? Everyone realizes it's early and patience is called for.
  15. Yeah, the early signs aren't encouraging at all, but I don't think we'll be able to make this call until near the end of the season.
  16. Aaron Boone's voice kind of reminds me of Ted Cruz, which doesn't do much for the viewing experience.
  17. I'm assuming Jackie won the last one, eh? JBJ for the All-Star team.
  18. I love beating up on bad teams...even better when one of those bad teams happens to be the Yankees.
  19. Hey, if everything went according to plan 100% of the time, we'd never be treated to game-winning hits by Big Papi.
  20. You're definitely right that it's a stretch, and I'm not counting on it by any means. There seems to be a sense around baseball that he has the makings of a fast-rising Conforto/Schwarber type, and I thought he could have gone to Salem last year and started this season in Portland, but the Red Sox seem content to move him along a bit more slowly.
  21. Well, I'd have given Castillo more of a chance, but I agree we have a hole to fill in left...Holt is not a terrible short-term solution, but only a short-term solution nonetheless. Personally I'm pulling for Benintendi to be ready to help us by late summer or fall, but in the meantime a lefthanded-hitting outfielder who could actually platoon effectively with Young (someone like De Aza) would be nice.
  22. Holt is a career .275/.335/.371, 94 wRC+ hitter. It's not like his offensive production is irreplaceable. I wouldn't hesitate to include him in a trade for a #1/2 SP, but I'm not sure he has that kind of value. In the meantime, I look forward to getting a real starting left fielder in the lineup and putting Holt back in the super-utility role where he is best used.
  23. Hopefully it's on the earlier side, because honestly, keeping him in Salem for much longer would just feel like a waste at this point. As a guy who was dominating Division I ball before being drafted, it seems like they've been pretty conservative with him already.
