  1. I was counting Price, Wright, Porcello, and Rodriguez, but it's fair to say we need to see a few more starts from E-Rod to really feel comfortable there. I see what you're saying here, but guys who are in the lower rungs of the minors and likely several years away (perhaps a little less for Moncada) are not "blocked" in any meaningful sense. No one knows what will happen in 2 or 3 years' time. I'm not saying you don't trade those guys under any circumstance, but the opinion that they are "blocked" is not a good argument for it.
  2. At least we have four SP currently whom one can feel at least somewhat confident in...the fifth spot is a garbage fire, but we have time to explore our options, both internal and external. You just pray no one else gets hurt in the meantime.
  3. Oh lord. I haven't been able to watch this series live (why Baltimore games are blacked out in NC, I don't know), but tell me they're not still talking about Kelly's winning streak (which I suppose remains intact after last night)... Could there be any better argument for disregarding pitchers' W/L entirely?
  4. Hahahahah f*** you, Showalter.
  5. So much.
  6. It always seemed to me that Ben was probably ordered from above to try to get major league ready talent in those trades, not prospects, to avoid the appearance of rebuilding and try to get back to winning in 2015 (and we know how that turned out). As a guy who's mostly criticised for being risk-averse to the extreme and prioritizing the long-term plan over the present, certain moves like the Lester/Lackey trades and the Hanley/Pablo signings never really seemed to fit Ben's MO. I'd have rather gotten the best prospects we could in both of those trades, and I suspect Ben might have as well. Now, 0.3 years of Lester for 1.3 years of Cespedes (who, as we now know, was just around the corner from a major breakout) was not a bad trade in isolation, but the Lackey deal...yeah, we really got bent over.
  7. It still baffles me that we could get such a s***** return for a #2 pitcher with a league minimum option for the following season. Yeah, I know Kelly may or may not put it all together at some point, but nearly two years after the trade he's still a project -- an unknown variable. He should have been a throw-in in that type of deal, not the headliner. I can only presume that STL hackers dug up some serious dirt on Cherington.
  8. Aww, shucks. I could say the same, of course. Regarding exit velocity...it's easy for me to see how a fan could watch every game of every season and never pay any attention to it, and never miss it. Nothing wrong with that. That doesn't make it a bad or useless stat, though. My eyes told me that Jackie smoked those two balls that ended up as fly outs the other night, and maybe for some people that's enough, but I like having something quantifiable to back that up as well. If I was trying to explain the event to someone who didn't watch or had no way to see the game, I can point to actual data to support my account, and not just "He hit it really hard, man." Like Hugh was saying earlier, almost any statistic can be dismissed out of hand if we assume that "the eye test" is sufficient on its own. I already know that Ortiz has been hitting a ton of doubles and home runs, so do we really need to track his slugging percentage?
  9. Does anyone think that maybe -- just maybe -- a move to the bullpen will give Clay a chance to correct his issues and, by keeping his innings down, help him stay healthy through the season? It would be really nice if he could get back on track and we get his usual 10-15 start spurt of greatness around late summer/fall instead of spring/early summer (provided the rest of our rotation does not fall to pieces in the meantime). That's probably the most extreme rose-colored-glasses way of looking at this, but I'm trying hard to find any positive to take away from this situation.
  10. Makes you wonder if the axe would have been so quick to fall on Buchholz if Kelly had pitched like this the last time around, instead of the near no-hitter.
  11. E-Rod to start Tuesday, Buchholz to the pen.
  12. Learning to spell 'Mientkiewicz' was good practice.
  13. Personally I like that there's an ever-growing smorgasbord of information out there for those who want to understand the game better, and that fans are free to partake of as much or as little of it as they wish.
  14. I definitely agree... a guy who's walking over a batter an inning in Triple-A has no business in the majors, period. I was just illustrating how craptastic our depth options are right now.
  15. Some really rotten luck for JBJ last night. Given the debate about exit velocity and its usefulness on a couple of other threads, some may find this interesting and some may not... From Alex Speier's newsletter*: *-- if you are not subscribed yet: (in Arnold voice) Do it! Do it nooowww!!
  16. Though he's deservedly the odd man out of the rotation at this point, I wouldn't toss him out the door just yet. Kelly was great the last time around, obviously, but he has yet to prove he can be any more reliable than Buch, and we'd still be just an injury away from having to give starts to Owens or O'Sullivan again. (Worth mentioning that Elias has looked good the last couple of starts, though.)
  17. He is here (username "A Red Sox Fan Named Hugh" I think?)... And as for the proposed trade, I'd be strangely okay with it. We have other great hitting prospects, but no MLB-ready stud pitcher that can compare to Urias. No idea if that'd be realistic for the Dodgers, though.
  18. Yeah, he looks pretty natural out there (which is refreshing after the Hanley adventure last year). Nice to see his bat starting to pick up, too.
  19. Same here. I thought he should have been up with us all last season (when not hurt, obviously) as well, and his production couldn't have been much worse than what we ended up getting from Victorino et. al. However, it's becoming a tougher and tougher argument to make as he continues to hit so poorly in Triple-A.
  20. Me when the Sox are playing like this:
  21. The Red Sox announced Saturday that Triple-A starting pitcher Brian Johnson was being placed on the club’s temporary inactive list while seeking help for anxiety issues. http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2016/05/21/red-sox-pitching-prospect-brian-johnson-placed-on-temporary-inactive-list-for-anxiety-issues/
  22. Castillo is really in the doghouse, huh?
  23. . Article says Moncada, Benintendi, Swihart, Owens for Trout. I would too, but I can't imagine the Angels would.
