  1. 3.14 ERA over his last 12 starts. Basically, people are complaining because he had a suck April/beginning of May. Jon Lester used to do that almost every year, it seemed like...if he pitches well the rest of the year, the slow start will be forgotten. In the meantime, the velocity is back and the peripheral stats all look great. It will take some time to get his ERA down to what people think of as "ace" levels, but he's well on his way there. Price is still not even a concern for this team, IMO.
  2. This is basically how I see it. I'd be kind of surprised to see him in July (though I suppose anything could happen), but sometime after the deadline would be a different story. Hopefully the injury to Holt isn't too serious...he and Brentz should be able to hold down the fort for a few weeks and buy Beni some time.
  3. I have not seen Moncada in person, but those who have all seem to say the same thing.
  4. Red Sox and Jason Groome are "in a stare down" according to Jon Heyman - $3.5 million offer on the table, but he seems to be holding out for a bit more. Not exactly unusual or alarming at this point, and as the article notes, the team still has room to up its offer. I still think he signs by the Friday deadline. http://www.todaysknuckleball.com/al/boston-red-sox/jason-groome-stare-offer-table/
  5. Yeah, someone (Jon Heyman, maybe) put out a tweet the other day that they had been banned from the 2017-18 signing period as well, and I about shat my pants. As it is, the punishment isn't too bad since they couldn't have spent more than $300k this year anyway, making their chances of landing a significant talent pretty remote.
  6. I agree. Like I've said before, I can see why they'd ask for a ton...I just hope the Red Sox don't go there. Have to imagine the price would start with Moncada or Benintendi plus more, and some recent comments have given me a lot of hope that Dave has little to no interest in trading those guys. I guess we'll see.
  7. In another tweet from Crasnick, he describes the chances of the Braves trading Julio Teheran as “not likely” unless Atlanta significantly lowers its asking price before the deadline. Given that the Braves reportedly want more for Teheran than they received from the D’Backs in the already-infamous Shelby Miller trade, it’s not hard to see why teams are balking at such a huge asking price. (And it’s also clear why Atlanta would demand so much for a controllable young arm with ace potential.) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/quick-hits-pitching-teheran-kershaw-giants-maeda-prospect-trades.html Yeah, let's not.
  8. Is JBJ going somewhere?
  9. Here's Soxprospects' breakdown of the deal and scouting reports on the prospects traded: http://news.soxprospects.com/2016/07/red-sox-trade-luis-alejandro-basabe.html http://news.soxprospects.com/2016/07/trade-anaylsis-scouting-prospects-dealt.html I hadn't realized just how high the lesser Basabe had risen in the rankings, to be honest. Still a pretty solid deal.
  10. Wasn't sure where else to put this, but here's Mookie on why he declined MLB's invitation to participate in the Home Run Derby: fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2016/07/08/mlb-asked-mookie-betts-to-participate-in-home-run-derby-but-he-politely-declined/ “I don’t know why the ball goes over the fence, but it does. How? Why? I have no idea how it does, but for me to go out there and try and do it on purpose I would mess myself up.” ... “I can’t hit home runs with those guys,” Betts said. “That’s like me going up in a Home Run Derby against Hanley and David. I can’t. That would be a complete waste of time and I don’t want to try and change my swing because I feel like I have more of a line-drive swing and not a 15-home run swing. “I’ll say it over and over again. I have no idea how or why it goes over the fence, but whatever. I won’t ask any questions.” Smart kid.
  11. Another midseason list out (Baseball America): http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/midseason-top-100-prospects/#cKr0jobAy0UpdrUk.97 #1 Moncada #9 Benintendi #15 Espinoza #41 Devers #93 Kopech
  12. I understand Teheran is a hot commodity, and honestly, I can't blame the Braves for wanting a big return for him, I just wouldn't make that deal personally. To be honest, I'm at the point of declaring the top five off limits unless a true superstar with several years of control becomes available, and I don't see that guy out there right now. I agree. We hear so much about this organization's failure to develop pitching prospects...I'm in no rush to deal away one of the two guys (three, when Groome signs) in the system who have legitimate TOTR potential.
  13. 2. Trade Michael Kopech, Rafael Devers and Mauricio Dubon to the Atlanta Braves for Julio Teheran. Gross.
  14. Haha...glad it wasn't just me who noticed this.
  15. Not to pile on, but I never understand reactions like this. Do you think there's any chance that Dombrowski isn't burning up the phone lines looking for pitching help? Does getting A.Hill, who fills a need for us, somehow preclude him from also trading for a pitcher or pitchers?
  16. I can't pretend to know anything about the background of these particular individuals, but even if they came from wealthy, affluent families, I wouldn't really expect them to understand the ins and outs of MLB's international amateur system. I imagine they were being misled/manipulated here as well, and I can't say I'm sad that some of them might get to pocket a few extra $ from the whole affair. The Red Sox certainly won't miss it.
  17. I agree, Kimmi...nothing earth-shattering here, but a solid move to shore up our depth without giving up a whole lot. We could stand to make a couple more of these. Another shoe is definitely going to drop soon. Funny how this move seemed to coincide last night with the report of interest in Hellickson, which makes all the sense in the world to me. He's been around the AL East, and you have a pretty good idea what you're going to get from him. He's also a rental and shouldn't cost a whole lot. If we can get, say, Hellickson and Rich Hill this month while saving our top five prospects, I'd be a pretty happy camper.
  18. No worries, Moon, and thanks.
  19. Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi Clay Buchholz, now in bullpen, doesn’t have a future in Boston; with Harvey news, perhaps he could help #Mets until Wheeler is ready. Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi Buchholz, with 5.91 ERA in final year of contract, would not cost a top prospect. #RedSox probably would eat substantial portion of salary.
  20. More intriguing than this actual trade: @JMastrodonato: So Red Sox lose Wilkerson, potential back-end starter, at a time when they’re desperate for SP. Have to assume there’s more in the works… @JMastrodonato: Would think if Red Sox are comfortable trading Wilkerson, Dombrowski is close to acquiring a starter.
  21. I really doubt these 16-17 year old kids have as much responsibility as the team, agents, etc. in this.
  22. I reserve my right to change my opinion on all of this and proclaim the whole affair an appalling miscarriage of justice, if not an outright anti-Boston conspiracy, if any of these kid actually turn out to be good.
  23. There's a lot of discussion of this in the main prospect thread starting around here: http://www.talksox.com/forum/threads/17481-2016-Prospects-Thread/page23
  24. Good points above. I hadn't realized Conforto was doing so poorly this season.
