  1. (Really though, great news. Would be awesome if we were able to come away with Quintana, too.)
  2. So he waited until the day before the deadline before signing AND got a little more money out of it? Who the hell does he think he is? He should have jumped at the Sox first offering, if not offered to take less. What a douchebag.
  3. Yeah, and because Will Middlebrooks didn't work out, we should have traded Bogaerts and Betts, too... because all prospects are the same. Come on, man.
  4. I'm amazed by some of the comments here... we e can't bitch about how we haven't developed good pitcher in forever and then be nonchalant about trading away probably the highest-ceilinged pitching prospect we've had in a long time. I'm not saying I hate the trade... I'm really trying to talk myself into being okay with it. We'd just better hope Pomeranz is the TOTR type his 2016 numbers make him appear to be. I really hope we don't look back on this someday the way Blue Jays fans probably think about the Syndergaard trade.
  5. Im honestly stunned.
  6. I'll wait until the whole trade is known before chiming in, but.....damn.
  7. Oakland has Gray through 2019...no reason for them to sell low on him now. Unless we can pull off some bizarre Donaldson-type deal where no one can believe Beane let him go for so little, I'm not really interested either at this point.
  8. 5 Red Sox in the top 50 (and three in the top 10) of Keith Law's midseason update: 3. Benintendi 5. Moncada 7. Devers 14. Espinoza 45. Kopech
  9. That's probably what I was thinking of. Good to hear, thanks.
  10. Yeah, even if both guns were a few mph hot, that's still some serious gas. A pitching Big Three of Espinoza, Kopech, and Groome is within sight.
  11. Holy s***: http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/red-soxs-michael-kopech-hits-105-start-vs-wilmington/#fLVAUUU5LDLXDgdP.97
  12. I agree. Pomeranz is interesting for a lot of reasons, and the Red Sox will really have to do their homework here.
  13. Maybe I'm just not extremely high on Dubon. A decent hitting, good glove, no power middle INF is good to have, but I'd trade that guy sooner than someone with more upside.
  14. I don't think that's a bad offer for the A's necessarily: two guys who were top 100 prospects in the recent past and are currently fraught with problems but could still realistically be back-end starters at some point. Maybe one of the two plus someone like Dubon? Seems like a lot to give for an old rental guy with a lot of health questions, but Hill's resurgence seems to be for real and we will have to compete with a lot of others for his services. Out of all the names above, I think I'd hate to give Basabe most of all, followed by Chavis. They can have Trey any time they want, though.
  15. I'd be perfectly happy to land Hill.
  16. Well, I certainly know what I'd do, but unfortunately I've never been in the position of having to decide whether or not to take $3.5 million. My guess is the Red Sox have room to do a bit better, Groome and his camp know this, and after some further haggling they will come to a deal.
  17. Saw this yesterday. Bradley is at #28 and Moncada #26 in today's segment. It looks like Espinoza did not make it (probably due to sheer distance from the majors, as you mentioned), but Bogey and Betts will be in the top 20.
  18. Well, I really mean better shape relative to what we saw last year/early this year. He's graded on a pretty generous curve.
  19. Thanks for explaining it all much better than I could, Hugh. Not sure why some people seem to be taking this so far pretty unremarkable process personally.
  20. Not particularly, no. As you say, though, Panda showing up in shape and ready to play next spring, rebuilding some trade value and allowing Moncada to spend a few months in Triple-A, would probably be the ideal scenario.
  21. Also, if anything, the Marlins are buyers right now. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/marlins-rich-hill-trade-rumor.html
  22. The trade market a year ago was flush with "rental" type pitchers heading into free agency - Price, Cueto, Samardzija, etc. This year you're limited to guys like Rich Hill and Hellickson. For non-rental types, Teheran is pretty good, but Atlanta's asking price is said to be extreme. Pomeranz and Cashner, maybe, depending on the cost. The Rays have Odorizzi and Moore, but will they deal within the division without demanding a big overpayment? And that's about it. I expect some more names may be thrown out there as the deadline approaches, but as of right now, the pickings look pretty slim, and the number of teams looking for pitching help is large. I expect we'll pick up someone for the back of the rotation, but expecting some sort of blockbuster acquisition seems like setting one's self up for disappointment. I don't think a #1/2 type is walking through that door on August 1st.
  23. Fixed. I agree that a Shaw trade is worth considering with Hill now in the fold and other 3B/1B options available for next year. He's already been worth about 2 WAR at midseason and has 5 years of control after 2016, so he should get a strong return. Might be a way to help us grab a pretty good pitcher without giving up the big prospects.
  24. Why is he a punk, twat, etc.? Lol...let's wait until the deadline passes with no deal before freaking out. Until then, it is just negotiation. I agree that it would be unwise for him not to sign for several reasons, but at the same time, this might be the only big payout he ever gets from baseball, and there's nothing wrong with him making sure he gets the best deal that he possibly can. By the end of Friday, he will be a Red Sox (in my expert opinion, of course ).
