  1. FWIW, doesn't look like the Sale sweepstakes is off just yet: http://www.todaysknuckleball.com/knuckleball-news/heyman-rangers-dodgers-red-sox-mysterious-chris-sale-derby/
  2. I know that was the strategy, but given that at the time I felt we were further away from contention than the FO seemed to think (which was borne out by events in 2015), I question whether it should have been. The Lester/Cespedes/Porcello series of deals I have no real problem with per se, but I've always wondered what kind of prospect packages might have been on the table for Lester if we hadn't insisted on major league talent... the Lackey trade, on the other hand, was a complete farce.
  3. They had four prospects on Baseball America's midseason top 100 list, then added the #21, #24, and #69 prospects via the Chapman and Miller trades... suddenly that's a very nice system. They're doing what the Red Sox should have done in the 2014 selloff, which is kind of disgusting.
  4. Guardians are getting Lucroy and A.Miller.
  5. Well hey now, I wouldn't go that far...
  6. Sure, and the pitcher who goes 22-4 probably had a better season than the one who went 4-22... it's just about the last thing I'd look at in order to determine whether a pitcher is performing well or not. (Last night is the perfect example as to why.)
  7. @jeffpassan: Sign that the trade market has officially gotten out of hand: Jeremy Hellickson may well fetch at least three, and perhaps four, prospects. ‏@jonmorosi: Sources who have spoken with #Nats believe they would trade Lucas Giolito to #Yankees for Andrew Miller, straight up. By nightfall on the 1st, the Kimbrel and Pomeranz deals may look like grand larceny on our part.
  8. Yes, I got that.
  9. I couldn't care less about his W-L record.
  10. I still consider Espinoza and Margot honorary Red Sox prospects as well.
  11. I'm including Beckett there as well (did not specify it had to be a FA). Like I said, I get the frustration... You're welcome to keep pouring on the rage if you wish, but I just don't really see what purpose that serves. It was a signing that pretty much everyone was in favor of, because despite the obvious risks, everyone knew a repeat of 2015 was unacceptable and the "ace" alternatives were few and all less attractive. We know Price is better than this...it's up to him now to turn it around, and he knows it. That's really all there is to it.
  12. Wtf?
  13. No excuses for Price, but I do believe -His results have been more mediocre than "f***ing disaster." -He has pitched much better this year than his 4.51 ERA would indicate (though I understand the perspective of those who couldn't care less about the peripherals and only worry about the bottom line). -He was trending upwards before taking a step back in his last couple of starts. -Not that it excuses Price in any way, but for whatever reason, this seems to be a trend for us...have we had a big-name pitcher come to Boston and immediately live up to expectations since Schilling? -He has not gotten anything close to a free pass for his performance thus far, either on this board or in Red Sox fandom at large. It's frustrating and more than a bit concerning, but I continue to hope for him to turn the corner and be the pitcher we all know he can be. It's not like we have any choice, right?
  14. Five Red Sox on MLB.com's midseason top 100 update: #2 Moncada #7 Benintendi #25 Devers #42 Groome #83 Kopech (Plus Espinoza at #21 and Margot at #36.) Also, the updated top 30 for the system: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016?list=bos
  15. It will be interesting to see what the team prioritizes between now and Monday... we've heard rumors about adding another SP, another good RP, or possibly a catcher (Lucroy), but I don't think anyone thinks we'll do all three, or even two out of the three (unless we want to seriously deplete our depth). So my question, TalkSox crowd, is.... If we only could make one significant move before the deadline, what would you like to see?
  16. He shouldn't be, and I'd be surprised if he actually is.
  17. Yes, I definitely hear where you're coming from and don't disagree. For what it's worth, I don't really believe in true "untouchables" - in the right deal, anyone is on the table.
  18. Peter Gammons: Boston was in to inquire about [Wade] Davis, but the Red Sox have let other teams know they will not discuss four players: Yoan Moncada, Andrew Benintendi, Michael Kopech and Rafael Devers. http://www.gammonsdaily.com/peter-gammons-trade-rumors-hall-of-fame-and-more-notes-from-july/ Interesting, but probably nothing. After the Chapman package, we'd probably have to give up one of those guys and more for Davis, which is nuts.
  19. Even a high ranking is not some kind of guarantee that the player has no bust potential, though...that was kind of my point.
  20. I never hear anyone describe our prospects as "can't miss" except for disgruntled fans and media...anyone who actually follows and evaluates prospects for a living would use that term extremely seldom or not at all. Maybe the closest thing we've had would be guys like Bogaerts and Moncada, elite talents who end up ranked among the top 2 or 3 in the game, but with prospects there is always some uncertainty and room for something to go wrong. Even in the current top 10 or 20 there will be a few guys who will end up busting.
  21. That's the thing...hypotheticals like this are fun, I suppose, but they really have no real-world application. We could trade for Trout, Sale, Stanton, and Lucroy tomorrow (assuming we had the assets and opportunity to do so) and not be guaranteed a single thing.
  22. Yeah, I wouldn't do that. 1) I know it was just an example, but Felix is paid a lot and really isn't the ace he was a few years ago, and 2) Moncada and Benintendi should soon help us contend for 6-7 postseasons. And I knew I shouldn't have even mentioned Peavy....now I've gone and set S5 off.
  23. Not enough info to answer, IMO. Who is the SP? How many years of control? Are we talking about an ace, or a marginal upgrade like 2013 Jake Peavy? I disagree that the notion that winning a WS automatically justifies any move made along the way. We won after trading for Peavy, but I don't think that means it would have been a good trade if we'd given Bogaerts or Betts for him.
