  1. The 8-run lead was only a 3-run lead by the time he was pulled.
  2. Is there a particular benchmark people would like to see met for this to be a successful trade? I think expecting Pomeranz to stay mostly healthy (say, averaging better than 28 starts per year) with an ERA under 4 between now and the end of 2018 would be more than fair.
  3. True. I wouldn't judge anyone based on one start...let's see how he's doing a couple months from now.
  4. Sucks that Pomeranz's debut went the way it did, but otherwise awesome game. 1st place, bitches!
  5. Hanley is determined to rescue this team from itself tonight.
  6. Well that went south quickly.
  7. Pomeranz is The Prince That Was Promised.
  8. Koji to the DL, Noe Ramirez recalled. http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2016/07/20/koji-uehara-right-pectoral-strain-placed-on-15-day-dl-noe-ramirez-recalled/
  9. YUGE. I agree...the thought of losing Koji for any length of time isn't comforting, but I'm not jumping off a cliff, either. Some combination of the guys you listed should be able to hold things together.
  10. Those types of arguments would make literally any prospect for "proven major leaguer" trade acceptable. I think there are rational and valid arguments in favor of the Pomeranz trade, but disregarding the value of prospects because we won't see them for a few years really isn't one of them.
  11. If Rodriguez can return to the form that was expected of him, then someone like Santana is not necessarily an "improvement" by any means. By my count, E-Rod is lined up for two more starts prior to the trade deadline...I think we see how he looks and make a decision from there as to whether we need another starter for this season or not. If we do, I'd still sooner go for someone like Hellickson who does not lock us in for 2017-18. Also, no way we see Kopech in September. I wouldn't even bet on seeing him in 2017.
  12. Both of those were for Beltre. We also got Owens and Barnes for V-Mart that year. http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=BOS&draft_round=1&draft_type=junreg&
  13. I'd agree, except we got JBJ and Swihart as compensation picks when Beltre left (yay for the old comp system).
  14. I have to ask, MVP (because I've been curious since I got here), what is your beef with Fangraphs? I sense there may be some backstory here that I am not privy to... lol.
  15. Anywho, bringing this back to Pomeranz/Espinoza... here's another interesting read/perspective on the trade: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/did-the-red-sox-really-overpay-for-drew-pomeranz/
  16. Santana is thoroughly meh, but kind of the anti-Buch: you can pencil him in for 180 innings of average pitching (give or take) and forget about it. Ideally, E-Rod looks good over his next few starts and any additional moves become unnecessary.
  17. Not disagreeing with that, but I'm not sure what more we could have expected. The LAD took on a ton of salary in that deal.
  18. A great salary dump can still be a great trade. In this case, it was 1000% necessary to clear the swamp (the thought that we could still be paying Carl Crawford gives me the heebie-jeebies), and doing so paved the way for the 2013 title by allowing us to add the likes of Napoli, Victorino, and the rest. I wouldn't say we got nothing in return, either. It's easy to forget now, but De La Rosa and Webster were promising arms at one point, the former of which has stuck in the majors as a back-of-the-rotation type starter. Those two helped us get Miley, who had a decent season and then got us Carson Smith. I think the other two guys went to Pittsburgh in the Hanrahan/Holt deal.
  19. Yeah, good job by Dave if this is true. I thought we gave a decent package for a rental of a solid but not elite relief pitcher, but this year, who knows? Recent days just go to show that trade negotiations can be a strange, unpredictable thing.
  20. Kopech finished with 5 IP, 1 ER, 3H, 3 BB, 9 K. Moncada homered twice and is now at .329/.415/.683 with 7 HR and 20 RBI in 21 games in Double-A.
  21. My first instinct is that I'd prefer to see the Yankees completely crushed (and preferably be there to see all hope leave their eyes, but we can't have everything, can we?) and deal with the O's later, but upon reflection, a few Yankee wins could keep them in that twilight zone between being true contenders and falling out of the race. If that keeps them from being sellers at the deadline and making some much-needed changes, it could be much more damaging to their long-term outlook.

  23. It should go without saying that a GM (or PBO) has to worry about both the present state of the franchise and the future, even years into the future. Saying "Who cares about the future, just win now" is not an answer, unless you want to drive your organization into the ground within a few years. A balance has to be struck between the two...whether Dombrowski has got it just right, or is erring a bit too far towards the present at the expense of the future, remains to be seen.
  24. I don't deny any of that, Slash & Bellhorn...it's just in close, low-scoring games like this, there's always a lot of "blame" (if you feel like assigning blame for a loss) to go around. As I said, Price did not pitch well, but even if he went 8 innings with 2 runs and 12 K's or something, we still lose unless we can put some runs on the board.
  25. A Mike Hazen sighting!!! Oh, and something about Moncada, too. http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2016/07/18/red-sox-gm-mike-hazen-still-no-immediate-plans-to-switch-yoan-moncadas-position/ “No,” said Hazen when asked if the Red Sox on the verge of introducing another position to the 21-year-old second baseman. “We want him to get comfortable at second base. He’s showing very well at second base right now. He’s developing at Double-A. We want him to go day in and day out, learn a position, master a position. We’ll tackle that as we need to.”
