Porcello and Verlander were called up to the major league rotation after 24 and 20 minor league starts, respectively. Verlander had 7 starts in AA, Porcello none. Neither ever saw AAA.
People would lose their minds if that happened in Boston.
Maybe some people are, but that's kind of silly.
Of course, no one ever thought Mookie would be an elite player in the major leagues until, suddenly, he was. Letting these kids play and finding out what they turn into is half the fun.
The link from Soxprospects that I posted earlier talks about how he lacks the elite upside of a Bogaerts, Betts, or Moncada and should be more of a solid starting player who could make some AS teams in his peak years. He doesn't have to be a superstar to be a really valuable player, so hopefully no one is expecting that (and definitely not right out of the gate).
I'd say he has "dominated" AA since June 1st (.316/.382/.574) after struggling for about half a month upon his initial call-up. Whether that makes him ready for the majors is a different question...and one that no one here is really qualified to answer.
Perhaps not. It was evident pretty quickly that he didn't have much to learn in A ball.
As one of the top college hitters coming into the draft, I'd rather have seen him pushed more aggressively through the lower levels in exchange for some more experience in AA/AAA, but so be it.
I was surprised to see this happen so quickly, but if they believe he's ready, why not turn him loose?
Love this stat:
2B+3B this year: 43
strikeouts: 39
Prior to this season he was ranked 69th by BA, 36th by MLB.com, and 59th by BP. I believe he fell off most midseason lists due to the poor season he's having, but it's still a nice piece to get back for a 2-month rental. He's only a year removed from being the 4th overall pick in the draft.
@ken_Rosenthal: Source: #RedSox pushing hardest to acquire #WhiteSox’s Sale. No indication trade will happen. “Late-night talks,” per @bnightengale.
@ken_Rosenthal: Asked a source how strongly I should pursue possibility of #RedSox acquiring #WhiteSox’s Sale. His response: “Don’t waste your time.”
Gonna be a long afternoon.
I think you hit the nail on the head. I always loathed that trade...huge missed opportunity.
The Yanks are really doing the rebuilding thing right so far, much as I hate that from a RS fan perspective.
I'm glad I don't have to make that call.
The White Sox have been rumored to like Benintendi a lot...if he was the primary piece in the deal, it would depend on what else is going, IMO.
These Sale rumors won't die...
@BNightengale
The Boston #RedSox had late-night talks with the #WhiteSox about Chris Sale. If Sale is moved, #RedSox and #Dodgers are likely destinations.
