  1. It's remotely possible Farrell knows what he is doing. Doubtful. Winning does not change my opinion.
  2. I would seriously try to avoid trading Devers, Groome or Travis at all, especially for a 2 month rental. I am not sure Devers is an option at this point, but I'm leaning towards giving him a chance sooner (within a month or so) rather than later (September call-up/2018?) I'd still think Pablo gets another significant chance to show something or be DFA'd.
  3. Sorry for misinterpreting your "meh" to mean you didn't see what I consider a major career trend of having a much better second half.
  4. This projection has Leon and Ross gone. They have Marco & Wright in AAA with the 25th slot open for an acquisition. . Travis at 1B and Devers at 3B as starters.
  5. I'm not saying we are going to do it, but we certainly would never trade Vaz for a B prospect. Yes, Vaz has been our best catcher so far this year, but it wasn't long ago, he was seemingly in Farrell's dog house. To be traded, Sox management would have to have faith in Swihart's ability to take his place. This is not likely, in my opinion, so I do NOT think Vaz will be traded. I do think there is a chance one of our top 3 catchers are traded at the deadline. To get a good player without giving up Devers, Groome of Travis, something has to give. We may choose to "go light" and not do anything major. My response of possibly trading Vaz was under the assumption we might want to get a major piece (big bat) at the deadline.
  6. MLBTR reports.... In what has unfortunately become a familiar refrain for Red Sox fans, right-hander Tyler Thornburg has suffered yet another setback in his recovery from a still-undetermined shoulder injury, writes Tim Britton of the Providence Journal. Thornburg had been long-tossing from 120 feet, but he’s now been shut down from that activity. Surgery has still not been recommended for Thornburg, manager John Farrell tells Britton. Fellow righty Carson Smith is targeting a rehab assignment this weekend, per Farrell, though a scheduled simulated game was pushed back from Tuesday to Wednesday. And, as Britton points out, the new CBA extends the rehab window for players coming back from Tommy John surgery from 30 days to 60 days, so Smith could have a lengthier rehab than most.
  7. I remember that game (from TV). I still blame Digger for never getting us farther. We had a stacked team.
  8. 15 out of 22. Big Beni hit! The pen again! Had lots of chance to put the game away. When things are going badly, we lose these types of games. Keep it up!
  9. Yes indeed. My Dad was a domer, too....class of '49.
  10. Baseball is a game of many variables and attempts to boil it all down to a few simple stats doesn't do it justice for me. Looking at numbers doesn't take away from the game I love so much.
  11. Thanks. Class of '81. I was a Freshman the year Joe Monatana (started the seasonas the 3rd string QB) led us to the national championship vs Earl Campbell and the Texas Longhorns. Our star-studded basketball team, led by - or should I say dragged down by- Digger Phelps went to the final 4 the same year. We also lost to Danny Ainge and Brigham Young. Here are some of the players that played while I was there: Bill Lambeer Kelly Tripuka Orlando Woolridge Tracy Jackson Bill Hanzlik John Paxson Joe Kleine Dave Batton Stan Wilcox Duck Williams Rich Branning Brude Flowers I played inter-hall football, basketball and baseball while there. It was highly competitive. I played some pick-up B-ball at the Rock with Orlando Woolridge, Silk Wilcox and some football players like Jerome heavens and Luther Bradley. "Those were the days."
  12. We'd be trading vaz, probably with another player(s) for a vet that can help us this year- not a B prospect. We'd keep Vaz rather than trade for that.
  13. I dealt with those attitudes at "that other site", and never understood why so many think that those interested in stats and numbers not only can't "enjoy the game", but can never "understand the human element" involved with the game. It didn't matter that I played the game (and others) for many many years. There might be nothing I enjoy more than watching the Sox win championships. The numbers are secondary. By the way, poor counseling at high school helped lead me to not take Calculus (and Chemistry) in HS, so when I got to the University of Notre Dame and chose Geology as my major, I nearly flunked freshman Calculus (and Chemisrty) first semester. I switched to Political Science by the start of semester two. I'm fascinated by math & science, but I'm no whiz at either.
  14. True, but I don't think Cashman is not known for building a farm. He traded for one, and only then, just recently. He has had some good farm products over the years. I'm not saying he was bad at farm building, but he traded away some of it, until his very recent re-build mode philosophy. Theo had some very good early draft picks and some good international selections. He rarely traded for top prospects. The two biggest Sox purges (the Dodger contract purge and the 2014 pitching staff purge) both happened after Theo left.
  15. Agreed, but a 3.78 ERA is more than a "meh" better than 4.58. I'm hoping Porcello turns it up a notch to end the season.
  16. I trust Sox management to know better than I, but I agree I like Devers as the next in line over Dominguez. I might even like him in line above some on the 25 man roster right now.
  17. Fair enough, but fangraphs has Vaz at +0.4 and Leon at +0.1. In light of how WAR is boosted a lot by playing more games, those numbers are both significantly higher than "replacement level". Our catcher team OPS is +0.5, which according to fangraphs ranks 20th. It's not great, but I would think replacement level would be around 0.0 and 26th or lower ranked. Look, I'm not saying either of these guys are going to being us back something great in trade, but I truly believe several teams would significantly benefit by having one of these two on their teams. I can see us using one of our catchers as part of a larger package to get something we need more.
  18. Well, if they trade Vaz or Leon, Swi will be "parked" at Fenway.
  19. I think he might make a good to great 2-3 inning RP'er someday, but right now, we have nobody beter to take a rotation slot away from him. 4.2 innings might just have to do.
  20. Range is more important than errors, but of course if someone making 50 errors at SS is compared to someone making 10, his range is going to have to be a lot better to overcome the ErrR factor. When you look at fangraph's fielding factors, the RngR factor always has a larger number range, so it appears to have a much bigger impact on defensive WAR. UZR/150 certainly values the amount of plays made within your zone and on the fringes very very highly. Making errors or not making them seems secondary. I've always maintained that several SSs make 50-80 or more plays a season than average or slightly below average SSs. Clearly, that more than makes up for the possibility that one of those SSs might make 10-25 more errors than those compared to.
  21. . But, it is not the major factor in determining defensive WAR
  22. I never said it had no value, but when people use it as the only or most important defensive stat, it is flat out wrong.
  23. Maybe they still see Matt Dominquez as the next guy in line for ML 3B depth.
  24. Have you seen the state of catching these days in MLB? Vaz & Leon are not "replacement level". They are much closer to average than replacement. Plus, there are 6 teams with a team catching WAR of 0.1 or less, including the Nats, Jays and Mariners. The Sox catching OPS is .690. That's not replacement level. It ranks 17th in MLB. It's just .014 away from top tier! Not bad for a catching tandem known for their defense. 5 teams have a catching OPS of under .619. That's replacement level, and those teams would probably love to have Swihart or Vaz added to their catcher mix. The Nats (.644) might even want Leon back.
  25. Whole career, too. 1st Half/2nd Half ERA 4.58/3.78 WHIP 1.39/1.23 OPS .773/.704 K/BB 2.81/3.48
