  1. We actually seem to do better vs good pitchers and get stymied by unknowns or average pitchers. (No data to back this up, but my gut feels it.)
  2. No, but there are several examples of smaller framed pitchers that are automatically labeled as non-starters. I do think Espi has enormous upside potential as other services must agree to have ranked him so highly based on little actual observational data. I do realize that his age and growth stage, there's a lot that can go wrong as well. You're right: we'll see.
  3. Muchas Gracias!
  4. Yeah, I heard the same about Pedro.
  5. In the meantime, there's an easier way to replace Moreland in the 4 slot: just move him to the 7 or 8 slot vs RHPs and keep platooning Young vs LHPs.
  6. Just some bum named... Chris Freakin' Sale
  7. I'm not sure you can tell anything after a 15 for 40 or 5 for 40 short stretch. I still want Young playing vs all LHPs, but he can play DH as Moreland sits. I can't see booting Young or HRam from DH even for one or two games. Brentz might get a look in September and improve his chances at being given a shot at the 4th OF'er slot in 2018, but he can become a minor league FA after this year, and he may think he has a better shot elsewhere at winning a larger role on a ML club. (Note: Brentz is not on the 40-man roster right now.)

  9. Why can't we ever get prospects like this?
  10. Moreland got an RBI yesterday, but keeping him up 4th has now entered the criminal negligence phase.
  11. Defense, to me, involves how you get the most out of each pitcher on your staff. It also involves pitch-framing and other hard-to-measure aspects of catching. Leon has generally been regarded as a better than average defensive catcher.
  12. Yes, an extra day here and there should help down the road. I do think JF has done a pretty good job not over-using the top starters, although having a well-performing pen made his choices easier.
  13. That's one reason I always loved sticking a knuckleballer in the middle of a rotation. It messes with opposing teams' timing, sometimes for days afterwards. (I actually did an in depth study of Sox starters after a Wake start and found their collective ERA was lower in starts after Wake than one not directly following a Wake start. I lost the study when my old PC got wiped out.)
  14. I totally agree. I still think soxprosspects does a pretty good job at evaluating our prospects.
  15. Becaause defense and handling of the staff matter way more than a hundred-fifty points added to our catcher OPS, assuming Avila keep hitting like he has this year and not like other recent years. I'm very happy with our current catchers and their .663 combined OPS (78 OPS+).
  16. Good points, but the Yankee staff throws way fewer fastballs than the next team and the league average, so whatever it is, they are following this strategy much more than the rest of the league. They may not have "discovered it", but they are adhering to it way more than other teams.
  17. Depends on how much some other organization values him. You make a good point. I doubt many teams value low power 1Bmen in an age of increasing HRs. He also looks like he might end up being a platoon player as well, which further devalues him. I think it might take Travis and one from Beeks or Lakins to get a decent rental RP'er- more if we want someone with another year or so of team control.
  18. Great points, Max. I think it's the nature of the beast for scouts to talk like that. I think they might still be a little in the pre-Moneyball mentality mode, but overall, I think their write-ups are informative and mostly accurate.
  19. His career is better, but I'd shy away from any RP'er in the midst of a poor season. His 5.0 BB/9 this year is scary.
  20. "They" is pretty obviously soxprospects.com- a small group of people who do some scouting and use other scouting sources to evaluate and rank our prospects. IMO, they have done a very good job with their evaluations and rankings. They have over-rated some prospects and under-rated others. My guess is they may be slightly on the "over-rating" side over the long haul, but I think they have done a fabulous job staying objective and informative.
  21. It wouldn't hurt, but to me, his exceptional IF range makes up for having an average arm or slightly lower than average arm.
  22. That's gross hyperbole. They often are critical of weak skill areas. They were big on saying Bogey would eventually have to move off SS. They have a pretty good record of ranking our prospects.
  23. Strickland is having a down year (1.41 WHIP fuelded by a 5.0 BB/9 rate), but his overall career numbers are pretty good: 1.083 WHIP 8.9 K/9 2.98 FIP
  24. soxprospects.com says Lin has an "average arm".
  25. That's why we should all be so very glad we have... Chris Freakin' Sale!
