  1. Apparently, any choice that fails is bad, and any choice that works is good.
  2. We thrive on tough competition. BRING IT ON!
  3. Some people might be so deeply invested in mathematics and data that they forget that there's a human side to baseball too and consequently forget that not everything in baseball is mathematically quantifiable. Some might be deeply invested in data but also played the game for over 20 years, totally enjoy the best game ever invented, totally have a deep emotional attachment to this wonderful game, and totally understand that not everything is quantifiable, including aspects on the "human side".
  4. I don't think fangraphs or anybody else I know does a very good job quantifying catcher defense, but for what it's worth, they have the Sox team catching defense ranked 23rd at +0.7. For some perspective, over 1/4th of ML teams are above 2.6. One could argue our catcher defense isn't as good as we think it is, but I disagree. Our catcher WAR ranks 30th at -0.6, which is 0.3 away from 29th place. O.3 is enough to move a team from 21st to 10th. our .434 catcher OPS is more than 100 points away from 25th place and about 200 points away from the team mean of .631. Other positions: RF 1.138 RF- 1st place SS .906- 4th place (even with Bogey out) 1B .871-6th place DH .830- 2nd place LF .786- 6th place 3B .779- 11th place 2B .773- 11th place CF .699- 16th place (surprisingly about average) We place here in WAR: 1st: DH 2nd: RF 5th: SS & 1B 8th: LF 15th: 3B & 2B 17th: CF 30th: C
  5. We almost pulled this game out of our ass. I agree: no way we have lost confidence. Infact, i think we gained some by tying the game in the 9th.
  6. I've always felt Bogey looks like the perfect #2 hitter. 1 Betts 2 Bogey 3 HRam 4 JMart 5 Devers 6 Beni 7 Nunez/Pedey 8 JBJ 9 Vaz
  7. We fought hard and sctratched our way to tie it up. It's a 162 game season for a reason. I still love this team and their chances.
  8. Of course. It was the right call, but since he was out, Cora sucks.
  9. For two innings you called for Kimbrel. Cora finally did what you wanted, and now it's "terrible coaching".
  10. Oh My Feakin God! Trade Swihart and extend Holt Now!
  11. Come on Holt! Shut me up for once and for all!
  12. I didn't expect Nunez to play everyday, and I could see him and Pedey getting the most rest, once Pedey reaches his maximum comeback level. Maybe Moreland sits more, if he's down to his career .780ish level. If Cora rests Betts, Beni, Bogey, Devers and JMart once every 20 games and Moreland, HRam, Pedey and JBJ once every 10 games, that leaves Nunez playing 13 out of 20 games. I guess that's close to enough. Maybe Pedey rests 3-4 games every 20, thereby giving Nunez about 3 out of every 4 games starting somewhere.
  13. Catcher defense involves more than throwing out base runners, blocking balls in the dirt and occaisonal plays around the plate. To me, getting the most out of your staff is very important but hard to quantify. I like what Vaz & Leon give us behind the plate, but the way Moreland & HRam are doing at 1B, and JBJ over .680, I can see how someone might see our catchers as our weakest position overall.
  14. Theo says that Big Papi asked to be traded once and that he almost signed Madden instead of Tito. Red Sox almost traded David Ortiz WWW.MLB.COM Three World Series rings and more than 500 homers later, it's hard to imagine the Red Sox once agonized over whether to play David Ortiz or Shea Hillenbrand. But that was exactly the debate in Boston's front office during the 2003 season. Ortiz had been signed in January after the Twins
  15. LOL! I thought we signed JMart to DH knowing he wants to play OF as much as possible. I'm not against giving him time out there, and think him playing only in NL parks might be as much as he should get and expect. I'm not the boss, but that's what I would do, especially after Pedey returns, and I'm looking for new PA opportunities for Nunez.
  16. Have you noticed JMart wandering aimlessly out there, yet?
  17. That's one Gran Paw!
  18. Travis Shaw with Boston: .251/.312/.442 Someone, not me, might argue he wilts under the spotlight or the pressure that comes with playing in Boston.
  19. I'd say ERA- and OPS against are better than ERA and WHIP. I'm not big on FIP, because it discriminates against low K but effective pitchers.
  20. They are going to be tough. They also dumped Bautista- addition by subtraction.
  21. It's hard to catch late breaks while watching on TV. Especially corner OF. Sometimes the TV view has the CF'er in view the second the ball is hit. As a TV viewer, we may never know if a ball was catchable or not. Sometimes, you just see a hard hit ball hit into no man's land and suddenly JBJ appears out of no where and makes the play, and you think, "He must have got a great break on that ball!" I haven't seen any of those plays with JD, but the Boston sample size is tiny.
  22. The cracked shoulder had something to do with his numbers as well, and feelings towards playing the OF.
  23. Let's hope Bogey continues where he left off. He was our best hitter (2nd best?) when he went on the DL.
  24. To me, a pitcher's wins is about last on my list of criteria. Team record in his starts matters more, but is still below ERA- or ERA+, WHIP, OPS against, xFIP, WAR and just plain old ERA.
