  1. Agree 100%. I'm okay with an occasional game in an AL park, if someone really needs a rest, but that should be avoided, if possible by scheduling OF days off in NL parks. Luckily, our NL park dates are pretty well scattered evenly.
  2. The difference is, we can keep JD's bat in the line-up as a DH. It's not JD vs JBJ in the line-up, it's actually Moreland vs JBJ's bat and JD vs JBJ's glove. In that light, the choice is obvious, to me. If we try to keep Devers in the line-up but not play 3B, then this is the choice: Devers vs JBJ's bat and JD vs JBJ on defense and Nunez/Lin/Holt on defense at 3B vs Devers.
  3. As of now, none count against the luxury tax, since he is not on our 40 man roster. The question is about what if we trade him, pay part of his deal and then the next team adds him to their 40 man roster. Would whatever we pay then count against us?
  4. If we can sign or trade for a great defensive CF'er making peanuts and get something worthwhile for JBJ (decent 3-4 starter), we might have to trade JBJ and let Pom walk just to pay everyone's arb raises.
  5. We'll need 2 Kimbrels, if we let JMart take JBJ's OF slot. Plus, people are all ga-ga over Moreland's bat right now. When he's back to hitting .780, adding his bat over JBJ's is not so enticing.
  6. That's what I was asking. I'm not sure. I would think that as long as we were not the team to call him up, it shouldn't count against us, but who know?
  7. I think the closer is an important role on any winning team, but we can't employ the best at every position. It's a trade-off. Many teams, including the Astros have proven you can win without a light-out closer. I love Kimbrel, and would like to keep him, but paying him Chapman money will mean we can't keep someone else ... and not just for next year either. Kimbrel's contract will be close to 9% of our player payroll for 3-5 more years. I hated to see Pablebon go, but it was the right thing to do. (I felt that way at the time and still do in hindsight.) It won't be easy to find the next Uehara, if there even is one. I have close to zero percent confidence in anyone in our system at this moment in time, but I suppose that could change by this coming winter.
  8. I'd just as soon have Swihart, JMart, Nunez or Lin (Holt when he's back) in LF than Castillo right now. It's not like Rusney is doing anything special to earn a shot this year. I'd like to see Swihart get a longer look than one game every 10 games. Let's find out what we have before trading or DFA'ing to bring up an equally unknown player that will kill our luxury tax this year and going forward. Say good bye to Kimbrel AND Pom, if we call up Castillo.
  9. It looks like he'll never catch even an inning. It makes sense to trade him, but even if we do, we'll have enough players to play OF: JMart DH to LF/RF Nunez will be looking for time once Pedey returns. Holt Moreland in a pinch Lin in a pinch Castillo is in no man's land. We should trade him and pay half his salary or more. However, I'm not sure if he makes the team's ML roster, if whatever we end up paying of his salary, counts against the luxury tax.
  10. Those 3 combined will not come close to what Kimbrel will make for multiple years. Also, 2 of those 3 look bad in hindsight, but those 2 got hurt. I'm not saying I want to trust Smith, Thornburg and Kelly next year, but my philosophy is not to pay over about 5% of our player payroll on a closer. Kimbrel may cost 7-9%.
  11. I doubt Castillo would be called up right now, even if there were no luxury tax implication. We'd have to trade or DFA Swihart.
  12. Are you seriously unaware that his OPS as a left fielder is .377 higher than his OPS as a DH? And in this particular case Betts was out, so Beni went to CF and JBJ to RF. Are you aware the sample size is tiny? (Just over over 50 PAs each) Last year, he was .909 as a DH in 22 PAs. In 2016, he was 513 points better as a DH (7 PAs). Career: .759 DH .770 LF I'm not doubting that JMart may end up doing better was an OF'er on offense over the long run, but at what expense? Also, what if he gets hurt? Might being a DH take time to adjust to? Why is it okay to let devers learn on the job at 3B but not JMart at DH?
  13. I'm fine with keeping Kimbrel, although his cost will be very high for a position that is often filled at a much cheaper cost (see Uehara). It would almost certainly mean we lose Pomeranz, but the way Velazquez is looking, maybe we'll be okay just finding a 6th starter to take the place of Velazquez next winter.
  14. Actually, it might be in our case. Castillo is no guarantee to be better at the ML level anyways. He'd take JBJ's place or Moreland's place, if JMart players corner OF. It has not gotten to the point of bringing up Castillo, even if there were no luxury tax implications. Besides, shouldn't Swihart get an extended look before Castillo?
  15. Are you implying that if we had a stronger farm, they wouldn't be slumping?
  16. The career Nunez is .732.
  17. Moreland is beginning to fall back to his mid to high .700's norm.
  18. Updated Sox OPS Leaders: 1.173 Betts (Clearly, the man.) 1.104 Bogey (Keep it going, XB) .941 JMart (Doing what it takes) .920 Holt (bad time to get hurt) .867 HRam (Hanging tough) .812 Moreland (Sinking like a lead balloon) .771 Beni (Bring it up!) .767 Devers (Same as Beni) ,658 Nunez (Gotaa wonder about the injury) .613 JBJ (Big sac fly today) .579 Lin (Back to earth) .486 Vaz (Hmmm.....) .390 Swihart (Not getting many chances) .285 Leon (Yes, his OPS not his OBP)
  19. When a player is returning from a serious injury, I'm fine with breaking him in slowly. Hopefully, both will be back next game.
  20. "...Hembree and Barnes don't have a solid history. Both throw hard but their command is an issue...." Hembree's going in the right direction at a steady pace: BB/9 4.5 in 2014 3.2 in 2015 3.0 in 2016 2.6 in 2017 2.0 in 2018 Barnes is another story: 3.1 in 2015 4.2 in 2016 3.6 in 2017 7.0 in 2018
  21. Nice to see Porcello step up and be the "stopper" with help from Kimbrel. Nice to see JD as a hitter and not just a power gut. Nice to see the negative nannies takinga seat, if only just temporarily. I'm still worries about Devers' learning curve falling within "the window," and now that he's not hitting really well, it becomes more noticable. Hey, we were outhit and still won. I remember when that was almost unheard of. Keep it going guys!
  22. It's not just about numbers. Bogey is just a plainly a better hitter than Beni, and his profile fits the 1 or 2 slot near perfectly.
  23. Loved the girlee hairdoo, too.
  24. Hosmer has 2 HRs and 4 RBI in 103 PAs (.757 OPS). Travis Shaw is on pace for 30 HRs and 84 RBI (.849 OPS). Moustakas on pace for 48 HRs and 114 RBI (.958 OPS).
  25. Interesting observation. It sounds like you are on to something. I never liked wearing cleats, and always wondered why nobody had invented anything better.
