  1. Could Velazquez be a "hidden Gem?" Could Groome be the "once in 15 years" gem? Could Beeks become a decent 3/4 guy? Houck, Shawryn, Hernandez and Scherff might produce one decent ML pitcher. Mata is far away but promising. All is not totally bleak, but nothing looks close to a grade A prospect either.
  2. Quality Starts/ Games Started (Listed at end--My modified criteria: games w 5+ IP 1 ER, 6+ IP 2 ER or 7+ IP 3 ER) 6/7 Porcello (7/7) 6/8 Sale (8/8) Amazing how Sale and Porcello are 15 out of 15 in my modified formula. 1/1 Johnson (1/1) 3/6 ERod (3/6) 1/3 Pomeranz (1/3) 2/7 Price (3/7) 0/2 Velazquez (2/2) Going by my modified criteria, Sale, Porcello, Velazquez and Johnson are a combined 18 out of 18. The others are 7 out of 16. All together, we are 25 out of 34 (74%).
  3. Largest metro areas without a MLB team (rank) 13. Riverside/San Bernardino/Ontario CA 22. Charlotte/Concord/Gastonia NC 24. San Antonio 25. Portland/Vancouver, WA 27. Raliegh, NC
  4. Let's replace our great defensive catchers with a .450 bum defender. Enjoy those facts, when our ERA skyrockets when we make Swihart our FT catcher. Next month, there will be three new players "holding us back." Will we trade them, too? What about July and August? Three more? If GMs were emotional and knee-jerk as you are, there'd be 18 trades a day- all year long.
  5. Well, Devers is a lot younger. JBJ has already proven he can go a long streatch and have decent numbers to show for it. JBJ is still at .773 since 2015. (.834 from 2015-2016)
  6. I did not say he was a lost cause. I have said I do not want to move him off 3B this year. I just do not think it was a good idea to subject him and the team to his learning curve during a tight window of our championship run(s). He may end up being a decnt defensive 3Bman. He has quickness. The fact is, he needs a lot of work, and the team has and will likely continue to suffer as he grows and improves. I'd have signed Moose over Moreland. We didn't do that. Devers is our 3Bman for the rest of this season. I'm guessing DD has no plans to move him, even if he still has not improved by October.
  7. Last year, our 7,8 & 9 slots were pretty good compared to other teams and their disparities between 1-6 and 7-9. 2017 Sox by batting order slots areas: .779 1-2 .744 3-6 .698 7-9 (Our 7 and 8 hitters had a higher OPS than out 5 hitter.) This year: 1-2 .874 3-6 .901 7-9 .576 Our 9 hitters (.625) has been almost as good as our 2 hitter (.634).
  8. Clearly, sitting HRam a little more looks more reasonable now than it did 2 weeks ago. It's not just about HRam; it's about JMart and Moreland mashing the ball. Right now, he's juts barely on pace to vest, It wouldn't take much more "resting" to set him on a pace to not vest. I'm not for benching him.
  9. LOL His year OPS is now below .800, too.
  10. I'm not saying HRam's 2 week sample size means he should be benched, but certainly playing him less looks more enticing now than 2 weeks ago.
  11. We also lost Travis Shaw- not a prospect. Margot might play over JBJ, or we could have traded JBJ. We also spent a lot of payroll on Kimbrel, although the FA markey ballooned after the trade.
  12. I've believed and said the same for years, but now Miami has a new stadium and TB, I think, is about to get one. The fans will still not come. Move a team to North Carolina and another to California, Buffalo or Indy.
  13. Right now, HRam is not necessarily the "best option". Moreland should play 1B (perhaps even ve LHPs), so it's basically HRam vs JBJ with Jmart at DH or corner OF depending on who is chosen. I could see a lefty-righty platoon at 1B with HRam DH'ing whenever JMart plays the OF. That might limit HRam to just enough PAs not to vest, AND it might be the best team to play. HRam is at .690 his last 14 days and .446 the last 7 days. I realize JBJ isn't any better, but he's a much better fielder and base runner.
  14. Well, some fans just enjoy watching baseball, winning or otherwise. Obviously, the teams that suck every year still draw thousands of fans and TV viewers, but I do think if your home team is highly competitive once every 5 years or so, it's easier to stay a fan through tough times.
  15. Sox OPS 1.252 Betts 1.060 Moreland 1.015 JMart .949 Bogey .920 Holt .798 HRam .766 Devers .728 Beni .625 Nunez .535 JBJ .528 Lin .491 Vaz .450 Swihart .445 Leon
  16. Maybe I'm a wishful thinker, but I expected Smith to struggle for a while. I think we will improve. Yes, Thornburg's return is not something to count on, but there is a chance he and Smith can take up the slack left by a departing Kimbrel. Of course, we'd be better with all 3, but since Smith and Thornburg have given us nothing, so far, once could hope that both could replace Kimbrel next year, and it's not robbing Peter to pay Paul. Replacing Pom might be harder, but right now, we're on top of MLB without Pom helping at all. Perhaps losing him won't be as bad as we thought in March. I know we'll need a lot to go right. I agree that we need to not let HRam vest, but I still think the "window" is wider than many feel it is. To me, it is 4 years: 2017-2020. Maybe this year, on paper, is our best chance, but I like our chances the next 2 years as well.
  17. DD traded a lot for Kimbrel, Thornburg & Smith. He also spent a huge amount of our payroll on Price. He created a strong window period that is about half way over.
  18. The solution is probably to let teams that can't stay competitive due to the lack of revenue fold, but that will not happen. I do think some teams should move, but instead they get public funded new stadiums that all but guarantee they will stay in a miserable market for decades.
  19. We are not even remotely close to being in trouble. We have Pedey and Thornburg in the wings, ERod and Pom shaking off the cobb webs and surprises like Velazquez and Poyner filling some gaps. It's been one month. Every year you will find 2-3 players that start out slow. Stop being chicken little. This team is for real.
  20. So, does that mean you've seen improvement?
  21. While we might not be able to add much in the next two years with spending, we could lose Pom & Kimbrel and still be pretty good, assuming we get healthier than this year and/or maybe guys like Velazquez, Poyner and _____ step in. We've basically played all this year without Thornburg, Pedey and Marco. I'm sure injuries will happen next year, too, but we might be able to be "as good" in 2019.
  22. Things won't get better in 2020, despite losing Pablito's contract. Just keeping Sale will take a $20M raise.
  23. Nobody is saying we should bench him or move him to 1B or DH this year. Have you seen any improvement at all? Just curious.
  24. I think ATL tried to get better.
