  1. Interesting article ... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/05/what-to-watch-for-as-the-pitching-landscape-evolves.html
  2. Differential between the mean of team OPS and Sox OPS by position: -.161 Catcher -.027 3B -.024 CF -.002 2B +.063 1B +.073 DH +.105 LF +.105 SS +.377 RF
  3. Last 28 days Sox OPS 1.225 Betts 1.201 Moreland 1.164 Martinez .901 Leon .858 Beni .784 Holt .736 Bogey .630 Devers .606 Nunez .542 HRam .439 JBJ .432 Vaz .350 Swihart For someone who loves judging players on 1 play, 1 game, 1 series or 1 week, you'd think you'd love Leon by now.
  4. MLB catcher numbers this year: .229 BA .306 OBP .372 SLG .678 OPS Maybe a certain poster believes the catcher position is some great offensive weapon for most teams.
  5. Pom had a 2.47 ERA after 17 starts in 2016. He wasn't as effective with the Sox after the trade, but he was discovered to have had an injury. He still had 9 of 14 games with the Sox with 0-2 Ers allowed. Yes the 3.4 BB/9 rate was too high, but allowing just 7.2 H/9 shows ability. He ended up with a 3.32 ERA last year in 32 starts, he had 23 of 32 starts with 0-2 ERs allowed. Damn impressive! OPS against .712 in 2017 .658 in 2016 6.0 WAR 2016-2017 combined (28th best in MLB) 76 ERA- (11th best in MLB) It was not a fluke. I hated the Pom trade, but it was never about my feelings about Pom. The guy can pitch.
  6. How was he so effective for 2 very long stretches? Did you "see" that or was it a mirage? Nobody gets lucky for that long. Pom pitched very well, depsite using many pitches to get to the 5th or 6th inning. I'm hopeful he can do that again. I wouldn't bet on it, but there is certainly reason for hope. You don't have to be a homer to have hope. My guess is many opposing GMs would love to take a chance on Pom this year.
  7. Good starter often have a stretch of bad games. Let's hope that's all this is for Pom and Porcello. ERod appears to be over his bad stretch. Price had his. Porcello: started the season with 7 starts without allowing more than 3 ERs. He's allowed 5, 5, 3 and 4 in his last 4 starts. Pomeranz: He hasn't looked good all season, a season that began on April 20th for him, Before today's game, he allowed 3, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4. His IP have been low, so those numbers look better than they actually were, but he should improve on his 19 BBs in 32 IP. ERod: Nice first 4 (3, 1, 2, 3 ERs), then 2 back-to-back 5 ER games, followed by another very nice 4 games (0, 3, 0, 2). Price: Started with a nice 4 (0. 0. 4, 1) then 3 bad (4, 5, 7), followed by 3 good (2, 2, 1). Sale has been steady with no game over 3 ERs allowed in 11 games. 7 out of 11 games with 0-1 ER allowed.
  8. Here's how our starters might line up: 5/27 ATL Sale 5/28 TOT Price 5/29 TOR Porcello 5/30 TOR ERod 5/31 @HOU Pom 6/1 @HOU Sale 6/2 @HOU Price 6/3 @HOU Porcello Day off 3 vs DET 3 vs CWS 10 game roda trip
  9. So, the first half of 2016 and all of 2017 was just a mirage? I'm fine with anyone giving up on Pom, but to act like there is no basis for hope is being overly pessimistic. The guy is returning from an injury. It's taking longer than any of us hoped, but certainly there's a pretty significant chance Pom can regain what he had. He's been good more than bad over the last 2+ years. I'm not projecting greatness. I just said I still have hope. I never make definitive judgments based on a 1 or 2 month sample size alone. Some here make them on sample sizes measured in days or weeks.
  10. I'd bet HRam would outhit Swihart for the remainder of 2018, but Swihart can play more positions, is cheaper and has a chance for a future with the Sox, small though it may be.
  11. I looked at that off-season as part of a two season rebuilding effort: offense in 2015 and pitching in 2016. The starting pitcher class for 2016 was stacked. I hated the Pablo signing and was okay with the HRam signing, but both ended up doing much worse than even I expected. Much, much worse. Our record on big FA signings has been close to horrible. Even the Manny signing that was a great one, ended badly. JD is off to a very nice start. Here's an incomplete list: JD Martinez Price HRam Pablo Lackey Crawford JD Drew DiceK Renteria Manny
  12. Steve Adams writes... As with any player who has been designated for assignment, the Red Sox will have a week to trade Ramirez, place him on outright waivers or release him. Given the remaining $15.17MM on this year’s $22MM salary and that easily attainable vesting option, it’s all but certain that Ramirez will be released rather than sent elsewhere. At that point, he’d be free to sign a new contract with a new club that would only owe him the pro-rated league minimum and wouldn’t need to worry about the vesting provision in his prior agreement in Boston.
  13. I still have hopes Pom comes around, but he's looked awful shaky since coming back from the injury. I like the way Velazqquez and Wright have looked, so I think we have the depth needed, if Pom never regains.
  14. Moreland for mayor!
  15. I was 110% against the Moreland signing, but he's the best option right now at 1B vs RHPs and LHPs. Holt is probably my second choice- not Swihart.
  16. Swihart is better vs RHPs same as Moreland. It makes no sense. It still looks like DH is his best chance to get PAs, and that depends on JBJ's offense and JD's OF defense.
  17. I guess he is now our backup first baseman? I would expect him to have more playing time then what he has seen the first 50 games.... I'd probably go with Holt before Swihart, at least until he starts slumping. Swihart could use a 4 for 5 game, today.
  18. 1) He's still not good enough to catch. He's caught 2 innings this year, and HRam's release doesn't change that. 2) With Pedey's return, Nunez now leap frogs Swihart as OF depth. Holt is probably ahead of him, too. 3) That leaves 1B and DH. JD should DH more now and play the OF less, but that might depend on JBJ's offense. We could see Swihart at DH, like today, and that's the only place he has started this year. 5) I suppose he could play 1B when Moreland needs a rest, but Holt may be a better option there as well, at least until he starts his normal late season slump. I just don't see Swihart playing any more than he has thus far, unless someone gets injured. If it's a major injury, we'll probably trade for someone before handing the FT job to Swihart. Now, if he starts hitting in the few chances he gets, maybe he can win a job.
  19. Swihart still won't play, but your point nails it.. The timing was based on this being the best and maybe only time, we could DFA him to get out of paying the option without a serious chance at a grievance being filed or won by HRam and his agent.
  20. very true. Moreland looked "happy" tonight. JD should be just about locked into the DH role, unless Pedey plays there every now and then. JBJ better heat it up. Nunez is looking for a place to play. (Nunez needs to warm up as well.)
  21. Amazing how this could be viewed as an understatement!
  22. Just goes to show, you can't believe everything anybody associated with management says.
  23. MLBTR... The fact that Ramirez’s contract includes a vesting option for the 2019 season did not come into play, Dombrowski was careful to note. “The vesting option has nothing to do with it,” he said. “We’re trying to do everything we can to win.” Whether or not it was a driving factor in the decision, the option can no longer vest, as it had been on track to do had Ramirez remained a semi-regular part of the Boston lineup.
  24. I, for one, am happy the Pablohram era is finally over. What a collosal waste of money.
  25. vs RHPs 1) Betts RF 2) Beni LF 3) JDM DH 4) Moreland 1B 5) Bogey SS 6) Devers 3B 7) Pedey/Nunez 2B 8) JBJ CF 9) Leon C vs LHPs 1) Betts 2) Bogey 3) JDM 4) Pedey 5) Moreland 6) Beni 7) Devers 8) Leon/Vaz 9) JBJ
