  1. I'm with you, and I think if you jump the arb years and offer lifetime financial security to Betts and his future family lineage, he might agree to a little less. I'd have no problem giving him the highest salary in MLB history at 10 years. I'd go 12, if it started now.
  2. He WAS good.... long ago. The last time he pitched, he had a 4.88 ERA in 2016. Why do you love guys like this but give up on our own players after small sample size failures and/ or injury histories?
  3. So, in a month, you'll be back demanding a he be traded.
  4. He needs to line up his hot streak with October. I don't think good pitching matters. It's all about him and his streaks.
  5. That's kind of how I feel, but I was "okay" with the deal at the time. There was really no other way to get pitchers like Price and Sale without doing what we did. Of course building and keeping a strong farm is the best way, but we've gone so long without developing a major force pitcher, expecting one to materialize (Kelly/Barnes/Ranaudo/Kopech/Espinoza?) was not realistic.
  6. Price is probably 10 times the pitcher Buch is, I think we're getting carried away with the semantics of the point on "3 X the pitcher". We all know we needed an ace. We used all our big prospects to get Sale, Pom & Kimbrel. As much as I hate these large and long contracts, I felt Price has the history that supported the idea that he was probably the best bet to give us what we so badly needed (and still do). Without Price or Sale, we don't stand much of a chance.
  7. Good analogy. Marathoners do not sprint during any point of their race.
  8. Last year was the only time since his first season way back in 2009 that Price's GS'd went below 27. He's started 31-34 games in 7 out of 8 seasons before 2017, and you are now using durability as a point of criticism. BTW, he's on pace for 32 starts this year.
  9. Part of the reason for so few RBI opportunities is that they put him in the 2 slot. I like putting your best hitter 2nd, but they don't put Simmons up 1st (.372 OBP), instead, they put Kinsler (.265 OBP) and Cozart (.331 OBP) in front of him. Their 9 slot has a .284 OBP.
  10. You are right about many long term deals not working out, and paying anyone more than $30M a year really limits the rest of your roster-budget ratios, but with Mookie, I'd roll the dice.
  11. Everyone feels this way.... now.
  12. The staff is doing a wonderful job, and I really think our catchers have helped significantly. Here are the OPS against numbers for 2018: .487 Workman .514 Kelly .516 Barnes .523 Haley (Wow, no Sale or Kimbrel in the top 4!) .566 Sale .589 Kimbrel .633 Porcello .635 Wright (on DL) .667 Scott .669 Walden (on DL) .685 Price .685 ERod .686 Hembree .744 Smith (on DL) .755 Poyner .756 Velazquez .758 Johnson .936 Pom (on DL) 1.244 Beeks Kimbrel, Kelly, barnes and Workman all have opps' BA against below 1.62!
  13. It does seem crazy, but this has been JBJ's MO for over 3 years. I never understood the crowd that said this year was different- like JBJ didn't look hopeless all those other years when struggling through a lengthy slump. You just plain cannot predict the future based on what a player has done the last week, month or even half season. Heck, we got people writing off Beeks over one bad start. Like everyone, I'd prefer JBJ to be more consistent, but he has always brought us stellar defense and a bat that wakes up for a month or so here and there. CF was never our weakest link and still isn't.
  14. I'm almost always for upgrading the rotation from the top, but there's no way we can afford to trade Bogey & Beni for deGrom and a RP'er. I can't stomach this.... 1) Betts RF 2) Nunez 2B/DH 3) JD LF/DH 4) Moreland 1B 5) Pedroia DH/2B 6) Devers 3B 7) Holt/Lin SS 8) JBJ CF 9) Vaz C This looks pretty bad, even with Pedey returning.
  15. JBJ is now 6 for his last 7 ABs. A tiny sample, for sure, but he's been hitting the ball hard for a much longer time.
  16. Hembree is quietly working his way back into the limelight. June numbers: 9.1 IP 1 ER 1 H 6 BB 13 Ks
  17. Let's hope JBj rides this hot streak all the way to October! People were so sure he'd never get hot again. How about the chances on him never going cold again? (Maybe the same, huh? Zero?)
  18. So, 2016 (before the injury) was part of a 1.5 season aberration?
  19. I'm not for trading Porcello. It was not my idea. I mentioned I'd consider it, based on 3 years of Baez for 1 year of Porcello AND that the money saved by losing Porcello's contract both this year and next would allow us to trade for a (salary dump) starter to take his place. (Note: the Cubs will NOT make this trade.)
  20. Summer 7-9 Slot Update Sox 5-12 (6/26) 4-8 (6/24) 1-10 (6/23) 6-15 (6/22) 5-13 (6/21) 21-58 (.362) Yanks 1-12 (6/26) 1-12 (6/25) 2-15 (6/24) 1-9 (6/23) 1-9 (6/22) 0-10 (6/21) 6-67 (.090) JBJ is now over .600 (.614) and almost over the Mendoza line (.199). Keep it going JBJ!!!!
  21. You say offense is the most important, because nobody plays D anymore. One could argue "era" here, too. Did LeBron and Jordon blow away the next best offensive players by all that much? If it's all about offense, then why not Wilt? (He got over 18 rebounds/gm every season he ever played.) Wilt's career line: 30.1 pts/gm/ 22.9 reb/ 4.4 Ast. BTW, he led the NBA in FG% nine time. How often have Jordan & James led the league--combined? What's the criteria? Sure, one can argue Russell & Chamberlain were men playing among boys, but that just proves how dominating they both were. Yes, the game has changed, but dominating is dominating, and to me the best should be based on who dominated the most. Rings and numbers matter. Getting the most out of your teammates matter. Intelligence, savvy and instincts matter. Yes, the 15 points per game hurts Russell's case, buy I think he could have scored more had they needed him to. I'm pretty sure 22-23 rebounds led to a lot of added points by someone.
  22. Not really. I said maybe, and besides, the Cubs won't take 1 year of Porcello for 3 years of Baez.
  23. Yes, there's more to the game....like 20+ rebounds and maybe the best defense ever played by any human ever born. Plus, I brought up Russell in the context of everyone calling Brady the best as a result of him having 5 rings. Many feel Jordon is better than LeBron due to the rings. I'm getting mixed messages on what the criteria is for judging who is the best or who at least belongs in the conversation. If I had to narrow it to 4, it would be.... Russell Chamberlain Jordon James I'd probably put the Big O 5th, but maybe I'm biased.
  24. Wright's injury is the same knee. I'm not sure if being hopeful is all that realistic. This sucks. Pom is too far away and might not be the answer anyways. Haley, Johnson and Velzaquez are decent fill-in starters, but we better not have to use them the rest of the year.
