I don't think they trust Swihart to catch more than a few games here or there. His 4 years of control may be the only thing keeping him around, as the window closes soon, and we may want to shed some catcher salary. We will also be more inclined to let Swihart get another chance to catch, if we aren't in serious playoff competition in 2020 or 2021.

MLBTR... 1:17pm: Werner and principal owner John Henry met with the Boston media today and indicated that they’ve not only discussed a long-term deal with Sale but also with Xander Bogaerts (link via the Globe’s Peter Abraham). Like Sale, Bogaerts is slated to become a free agent at the end of the 2019 season. The ownership reps noted that while they’d love to be able to keep each of Sale, Bogaerts and Mookie Betts in Red Sox uniform for the long haul, such a scenario probably isn’t realistic. Perhaps of note, when asked about the last top-tier lefty the Sox had on the cusp of free agency, Henry candidly acknowledged that the Red Sox “blew it” when trying to work out an extension with Jon Lester prior to 2014 — Lester’s last in Boston.

I'd prefer a 4 or 5 year deal, but he deserves 6+. The opt out is probably the best way to go. I'm not sure he'll get $33M, especially if he has health issues this year. An extension puts all the risk on the Sox, unless they come up with a "Lackey clause" to counter the opt out

The thing is, if we trade or DFA a catcher, we won't add an OF'er anyway.

We have stop gap guys, and if Bogey goes on the DL, we have Lin. Holt is okay in the OF. JD wants to play OF, but I'd prefer he never play there, if possible.

Every team has some rabid fans, and my guess is there are a few Braves fans near the FLA border or even in FLA. Are you really thinking these new rivalries won't generate much added interest? You keep picking out the least of the match-ups, and never comment on the mega rivalries out there for the taking.

True, but I think some teams still in on Harper and/or Machado might spend on someone else, if they come up short. That's probably what Kimbrel is hoping for.

Well, if Haper & Machado sign $240/8 to $280/8, I'm not sure that's a sign of a significant decline. There are a few players that made more per year than MLBTR's projected, but many got less years.

Yes. Both can play LF in a pinch, but that doesn't add any flexibility. Nunez and Holt as the other 2 fill every need, and if Pedey starts on the DL, there's room for Swi or Lin.

You picked the one with the least impact. Yes, I doubt anyone makes a road trip to the other team's park. Some Braves fans might go to TB to watch a game. I'm thinking more of these match-ups: SF-Oak KC-STL NYY-NYYM NYM- BOS/BAL Cubs-CWS MIL-Cubs MIL-MN CLE-CIN DET-CIN CLE-PIT DET-PIT PHI-NYY PHI-BAL & WS BAL-WSH HOU-TEX SD-LAA SEA-SF I believe it would be a big boost to attendance, TV viewership and interest.

One wonders, depending on what Harper & Machado end up getting, if there will be a rush for extensions based on the thinking FA salaries may decline.

True, but with Pedey & Nunez hobbled, we likely will see someone on the DL on opening day. Since Swihart is out of options, my guess is he goes, barring injury, but I'd be fine with doing what we did last year, if someone is on the DL.

I guess the real question is what is the differential between Swihart and Centeno? Is the drop off worth having Lin on the 25 over Swihart?

I do think Swihart has value, and I'm fine with him as our 25th man. It's nice having a guy that can catch when we may want to PH for our catchers once or twice a game. He can play other positions and seems athletic, which mean he may improve. The only reason I'm saying trade him is because DD said they are not going with 3 catchers. I think we can get a decent minor leaguer for him or trade him with someone else for a slight upgrade. I have not written him off as a catcher, but our window may close after 2019, and I don't want to mess with the good thing we have going with our staff. Keeping him around for 2020 might be the best reason for keeping him. We may be able to afford a learning curve with him then.

I do see a vast difference between Vaz/Leon and Swi on defense and pitcher handling. Swi has more upside on O than Leon and maybe Vaz. I know we disagree, which is fine, but I see an overall wider gap than you and others do. Again, I won't be crushed if they trade Vaz or Leon, but I think our staff will suffer, at least for the time it takes them to build comfort with Swi, otherwise, we'll be over-working Leon or Vaz.

Yes, it was a Taz issue in 2016. Once added to the roster, his contract could not be removed for the remainder of his deal. It's not like choices are made in isolation. DD had his mind on 2017 and beyond in 2016. Brentz is a capable AAA insurance, as is Swihart, but Swi is out of options, so he sticks around. I don't think there's anything more to it than that. If Swihart had options, Lin would be #25.

Castillo was not part of the choices. The tax hit disqualifies him. Brentz has shown he's not ML talent. Swihart's ability to be the 3rd string catcher is the only thing that has kept him barely alive. Vaz and Leon have both been hurt, as catchers often are, so keeping a hopeful and athletic guy as our 25th man is not all that strange. If Swihart had options left, we wouldn't even be talking about him. Lin, Brentz and others had and still have options.

I disagree. When Swihart played LF for us, it was only because a deal for Beltran fell apart at the last minute. I think he has only kept him around as insurance and because he seems to have some upside potential only briefly seen several years ago. He may have also been trying to drive his trade value up, but for this long? That argument is light. I think Swihart gets traded or DFA'd at the last minute, in hopes nobody claims him. (My guess is he would be claimed. Look at some of the catchers still being recycled!)

MLBTR... Harper’s market is still “evolving,” as Heyman puts it in his latest tweet. The Phillies are still seen as the likeliest team to land Bryce Harper, though the outfielder has received several long-term deals with an average annual value of more than $30MM per season. There is no deal yet, though according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter link), Bryce Harper “will ultimately receive” a larger contract than the ten-year, $300MM offer he received from the Nationals before free agency began. Rival general managers have been told that Manny Machado’s offer from the Padres is at least eight years/$240MM with deferred money, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter links). Some other GMs, however, have been told that Machado has been offered $280MM. The dominoes may fall, soon!
