  1. Our RHPs do very well vs lefties. I'm not sure it matters much.
  2. Then, by all means, sign Eovaldi!
  3. Like from within the system? Like Ockimey vs Jake Cosart? Or like a FA signing? Don't teams usually protect 40 and then deal with who to cut or trade after they make or sign a deal for someone?
  4. It seems weird that so many reports claimed we cut Cuevas and demoted Maddox to make room for Brewer and the rule 5 guys, but in reality, there was room to keep one (and cut them later, once we sign someone).
  5. Eovaldi for 2 years would be fantastic. I'm not high on Keuchel or Morton. I don't see any other starters that match with us that are not big gambles, so if we don't get Eovaldi, I'm thinking 2 solid pen arms instead.
  6. We could really use a big jump by someone. Nobody really did this year. I'm looking at Mata and D Hernandez as one to add to your list.
  7. I liked Dubon a lot. I was not high on Shaw at all. I liked the trade, because Thornburg looked awesome. The weird injury was hard to foresee. I wish we had Dubon now, and Shaw is playing 2B for MIL, so he could help us there, but I'm not going to be hard on DD for this trade, since I liked it at the time, and we have a ring, now.
  8. Now, I hear SD might get Seguro & Mike Leake with Wil Myers going to SEA.
  9. Maybe my love affair with Marco Hernandez is about to come to an end.
  10. Daalbec has a better chance than Felton, but there's no hurry to add either.
  11. Makes me think a signing is imminent. They just didn't want to string Ockimey along. One would think, if they had a trade lined up for Ockimey, they'd have added him today and traded him soon.
  12. FBS Playoff Rankings 1. Alabama 2. Clemson 3. Notre Dame 4. Michigan 5. Georgia 6. Oklahoma 7. LSU 8. Wash St 9. UCF 10 Ohio St
  13. Moreland/Pearce platoon (JD Martinez?) Swihart Holt AAA Travis Chavis Dalbec (not on 40 man roster, yet)
  14. I think we're at 39 now, but if we need to boot (or trade) someone, this is my list... 1) Marco Hernandez 2) Chandler Shepherd 3) Robby Scott 4) Blake Swihart (out of options) 5) Sam Travis 6) Thornburg (doubtful)
  15. I set the filter to SP'ers, so the 30 IP did not incluse RP'ers. I lowered the IP to 30, to see if any starters had a higher fWAR than Johnson, even with less IP, and there were quite a few. They may be higher rated than Johnson for next year. They may not be. Why set the IP at just 60 IP, just because that is exactly what Johnson had? Is that the magic number for you to call him a legitimate SP'er, and 50, 40 or 30 is not? Stick to 60 IP, if you want, and Johnson placed 150th in fWAR. That's dead last out of 150 (30 teams x 5 starters). BTW, I don't view Johnson as 150th, and the bWAR shows him to be much better, but I'm not cherry-picking fWAR. I never use BWAR. Ever. I like Johnson, but there is no way, after 13 decent starts, I'm ready to anoint him a top 6 fifth starter in MLB.
  16. Maybe I'm in a minority, but 13 starts is a teenie tiny sample size. And, yes, 180-200 PAs is tiny, too. I'm not down on Johnson, but he was not and is not a top 5th starter in MLB, IMO. He might become one, and I'm not giving up on him after a decent season, but I hope we don't plan on him for 24+ starts next year.
  17. Come on. Johnson and Gabbard's sample sizes are/were puny. To give Johnson extra points for consistency because he came up for very short stays of 4.1 IP one year and 27 IP another- both with WHIP's over 1.48 is not really fair. True, Gabbard's 66.2 IP should not have been a projection of what was to come, but that's kind of the point I'm making about Johnson. He certainly may end up better than Gabbard did, but I remember a few Sox fans lovin' on Kason, too.
  18. The Current 40 Man Roster: Red: Bubble Roster or trade candidate Pitchers: Sale, Price, Porcello, ERod, Wright, Johnson, Velazquez, D Hernandez, Shepherd, D Reyes Barnes, Brasier, Hembree, Workman, Brewer, Poyner, Thornburg, Walden, Scott, Taylor, Lakins Catchers: Vazquez, Leon, Swihart 1B: Moreland, Pearce, Travis 2B: Pedroia (DL?), Holt, M Hernandez 3B: Devers, Nunez, Chavis SS: Bogaerts, Lin LF: Benintendi CF: Bradley RF: Betts DH: Martinez I count 39. Am I missing someone, or do we just have 39 right now?
  19. I'm sure some team thinks he's better than their 39th or 40th guy on their roster, but that does not mean they are willing to give up much for him. I'm seeing him more as a throw-in with others to slightly improve the return. Hopefully.
  20. A comp... Kason Gabbard with Boston 12 GS'd (66.2 IP) 3.65 ERA 1.29 WHIP 131 ERA+ Johnson 19 GS'd (130.2 IP) 4.34 ERA 1.45 WHIP 102 ERA+
  21. Johnson started just 13 games for us this year and had 60.2 IP'd as a starter. His ERA as a starter was 4.15 (slightly better than as a RP'er but his WHIP was pretty ugly at 1.451. I'm really not so sure he'd win a starting role on even half the teams in MLB, if he puts up those numbers next year. Sure, there are teams with holes in their rotations that he'd have a good shot at making the rotation, but I don't think that number is close to 24. Of the 165 MLB starting pitchers with 60+ IP, Johnson ranked 150th in fWAR (0.2), 146th in xFIP (4.91) and 143rd in WHIP (1.45). If you drop the IP to 30, there were 170 starting pitchers with a higher fWAR than Johnson. 5 starters x 30 teams= 150. I like Johnson and think he can improve, but I'm not seeing what you're seeing.
  22. That's certainly a possibility, but my guess is he will be traded before the rule 5 draft. His value cannot be that high, since everyone knows he can be taken for nothing in the draft. Maybe we trade Swihart, Ockimey and a pitcher for a better pitcher. It has to be a team that has roster room. How many are there?
  23. Here's a write up on Colten Brewer from MLBTR Brewer, a fourth-round pick of the Pirates in 2011, has just 9 2/3 innings of big league experience, all of which came with the Padres in 2018. He was tagged for six earned runs on 15 hits and seven walks with 10 strikeouts in that time, but he was much better in Triple-A El Paso. Despite the hitter-friendly nature of his home environment in Triple-A, Brewer posted a 3.75 ERA with more impressive marks of 11.8 K/9 against 2.8 BB/9 with a 55.8 percent grounder rate in 48 innings of relief. Brewer only recently turned 26 and has two minor league option years remaining, so he’ll give the Red Sox some bullpen depth that can be shuttled back and forth between Boston and Pawtucket next season.
  24. So, we add Chavis, lakins, D Hernandez, D reyes, Josh taylor and newly acquired Colten Brewer. I count 39 roster slots filled. I imagine a FA signing will fill that void. Anyone know when you can place someone on the 60 day DL (Wright, Pedey or marco hernandez)? Any other acquisition would mean trading or DFA'ing someone, most likely from this list: Swihart Marco Hernandez Robby Scott Thornburg C Shepherd What's the chances we lose someone to rule 5? Victor Acosta Christopher Acosta Yoan Aybar Roldani Baldwin Trey Ball Juan Barriento Edilson Batista Eduard Bazardo Jordan Betts Marino Campana Rusney Castillo Juan Centeno Luis Colmenares Eduard Conde Harrison Cooney Jake Cosart Ricardo Cubillan Enmanuel De Jesus Chad De La Guerra Jhonathan Diaz Jerry Downs Nick Duron Junior Espinoza Willis Figueroa Devon Fisher Austin Glorius Daniel Gonzalez Juan Hernandez Oscar Hernandez Tyler Hill Dedgar Jimenez Trevor Kelley Trenton Kemp Matt Kent Marcos Lantigua Adam Lau Deiner Lopez Isaias Lucena Chris Madera Danny Mars Algenis Martinez Tate Matheny Kevin McAvoy Daniel McGrath Samuel Miranda Joseph Monge Mark Montgomery Jhon Nunez Josh Ockimey Angel Padron Yorvin Pantoja Roniel Raudes Austin Rei Hildemaro Requena Eddy Reynoso Jeremy Rivera Jake Romanski Josh A. Smith Teddy Stankiewicz Kevin Steen Cole Sturgeon Luke Tendler Josh Tobias Carlos Tovar Kyri Washington Jordan Weems Jantzen Witte Any reason why Ockimey was not added to the roster?
  25. I'm not for trading Vaz or Leon. Our pitchers love them too much. I was just responding to a post about trading Vaz and mentioned i thought it would take more than Vaz to get Colome. I do think there are other catchers out there who know how to handle a staff, but I'm not sure about risking a lengthy learning curve during another championship drive in 2019. If it wss up to me, I keep Vaz & Leon and maybe trade Swihart with prospects for something of value.
