  1. Interesting read... Chris Sale and Extension Talks
  2. I do see a vast difference between Vaz/Leon and Swi on defense and pitcher handling. Swi has more upside on O than Leon and maybe Vaz. I know we disagree, which is fine, but I see an overall wider gap than you and others do. Again, I won't be crushed if they trade Vaz or Leon, but I think our staff will suffer, at least for the time it takes them to build comfort with Swi, otherwise, we'll be over-working Leon or Vaz.
  3. Yes, it was a Taz issue in 2016. Once added to the roster, his contract could not be removed for the remainder of his deal. It's not like choices are made in isolation. DD had his mind on 2017 and beyond in 2016. Brentz is a capable AAA insurance, as is Swihart, but Swi is out of options, so he sticks around. I don't think there's anything more to it than that. If Swihart had options, Lin would be #25.
  4. The Red Sox plan to use Steven Wright as a full-time reliever this season, MLB.com’s Ian Browne writes, with manager Alex Cora casting Wright as a potential multi-inning threat. At first glance, a knuckleballer would seem like an unusually durable option to relegate to the bullpen, though Wright is just happy to be pitching in any capacity after two injury-plagued seasons. There is also the possibility for higher-profile assignments within Boston’s pen, given the team’s lack of an established closer.
  5. Castillo was not part of the choices. The tax hit disqualifies him. Brentz has shown he's not ML talent. Swihart's ability to be the 3rd string catcher is the only thing that has kept him barely alive. Vaz and Leon have both been hurt, as catchers often are, so keeping a hopeful and athletic guy as our 25th man is not all that strange. If Swihart had options left, we wouldn't even be talking about him. Lin, Brentz and others had and still have options.
  6. I disagree. When Swihart played LF for us, it was only because a deal for Beltran fell apart at the last minute. I think he has only kept him around as insurance and because he seems to have some upside potential only briefly seen several years ago. He may have also been trying to drive his trade value up, but for this long? That argument is light. I think Swihart gets traded or DFA'd at the last minute, in hopes nobody claims him. (My guess is he would be claimed. Look at some of the catchers still being recycled!)
  7. Exactly.
  8. MLBTR... Harper’s market is still “evolving,” as Heyman puts it in his latest tweet. The Phillies are still seen as the likeliest team to land Bryce Harper, though the outfielder has received several long-term deals with an average annual value of more than $30MM per season. There is no deal yet, though according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter link), Bryce Harper “will ultimately receive” a larger contract than the ten-year, $300MM offer he received from the Nationals before free agency began. Rival general managers have been told that Manny Machado’s offer from the Padres is at least eight years/$240MM with deferred money, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter links). Some other GMs, however, have been told that Machado has been offered $280MM. The dominoes may fall, soon!
  9. Expand the 25 man to 27. Expand the 40 man to 44. Double minimum wage at the nest CBA. Start arbs two years earlier and begin free agency one year earlier.
  10. It might take Swihart or Vaz a long time to build up to what Leon has established with them. Maybe it can happen much quicker than I think, then again, maybe it never happens. There's a reason Swihart has never caught Leon. There's a reason Sale has been caught by Leon in 49 games (2.42 ERA) to Vaz's 11 games (3.40). Maybe these numbers are insignificant, but I, for one, am not wanting to it put to a test. Vaz has caught Price more than Leon, and that switch doesn't scare me as much, but Leon does get more from Price: w Leon: 30 games (2.83) w Vaz: 47 games (4.32) w Swihart: 2 games (5.73) Only two games is telling as well. Certainly losing Leon's bat would almost certainly bring a plus on offense, but personally, I'd like to keep Vaz and Leon. I don't trust Leon for more than 80 games, let alone 100+, so trading Vaz would scare me more. I wouldn't be crushed, if we traded Leon, but I just don't see us getting something for him that would make up for the probable loss from Sale and Price.
  11. We only need Leon with Sale and Price. That's 60-65 starts only.
  12. IMO, that would be Vaz. I'm not onboard with trading Vaz or Leon.
  13. I think the September roster expansion does allow for teams to rest players as they near the playoffs, but I agree that it gets out of hand. I'd like to see the roster expanded to 26 or 27 players and maybe the 40 man roster to 42 to 44. I could see allowing an expansion of 1 or 2 players depending on rosters being at 26 or 27 all year.
  14. True, but in the Tampa area there are a lot of Sox fans (and Yank fans), but certainly them playing Miami and Atlanta would create a better rivalry.
  15. Occasionally, you get a view of the CF'er and the batter in the same frame. I realize we're talking fraction of seconds in reaction time differentials between one player and another, but it seems like he gets an excellent jump on his first step both in terms of speed and as you pointed out, perfect (or near perfect) directional instincts.
  16. I know it's subjective, but I still say it to myself pretty often.
  17. No, I never said bringing the DH meant you had to make major changes, and to me, it's not for the "sake of change." Creating regional rivalries would be fantastic for baseball. Us playing Toronto 18 times a year means nothing to me. If we played the Mets, it would be much better. Adding rivalries would mean much more to other teams, and some low teams can use all the help they can get. KC vs STL TB vs MIA Oak vs SF SD vs LAA Tex vs HOU MN vs MIL MIL vs Cubs Cin vs CLE and DET Pit vs CLE & DET Then, the mega city rivalries: NYY v NYM LAD V LAA Cubs v CWS I get the hold tradition has, but this is the modern age. Build rivalries. Cut travels costs and time (Players would love less long flights.) It's not change for change sake. It's change for the better. To me, the advantages are clear as day.
  18. More so than before, and they did make severe changes more than once.
  19. No, but I often think, "That's a catch someone else would not have made or would have had to dive for it."
  20. It seems the tradition for most sports is to change to regional divisions or conferences.
  21. I get excited when we win, so if analytics help us win, count me IN!
  22. MLBTR... The Red Sox are expected to trade a catcher – be it Christian Vazquez, Sandy Leon or Blake Swihart – before the season. If that happens, they’ll likely be left with minor league signing Juan Centeno as their No. 3 backstop. Manager Alex Cora said Saturday he’d be “comfortable” in that scenario, pointing out he’s familiar with the veteran Centeno from their time with the World Series-winning Houston organization in 2017, per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. Centeno’s contract does not include an opt-out clause, president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski confirmed to Smith, so the Red Sox aren’t in danger of losing him before the season. However, as Smith notes, if Boston adds Centeno to its 40-man roster at some point and then tries to send him to the minors, it’ll need to pass him through waivers because he’s out of options.
  23. Let's see what our line-up might look like if Pedey starts vs all LHPs (~60) and maybe one-third vs RHPs (~40). vs RHPs 1. Beni L 2. Betts R 3. Bogey R 4. JD R 5. Devers L 6. Moreland R 7. Holt L/ Pedey R 8. Vaz R/ Leon # 9. JBJ L vs L 1. Beni L 2. Betts R 3. Bogey R 4. JD R 5. Pearce R 6. Pedey R 7. Devers L 8. Vaz R/ Leon # 9. JBJ L

  25. Pedey could offer this team a big boost. Last year, our 2B offense and defense were not very good.
