  1. Good point, but you have to keep fans coming to games and watching on TV. Plus, we may have a slight chance of competing, if some farm guys surprise.
  2. Verlander extends for $66M/2.
  3. I did the math. We can reset and keep JD, if we let Bogey & Porcello go. We won't have much for filling other needs and will rely on DHernandez, Chatham, Chavis/Dalbec and minor free agents for one year as we reset. The, IMO, it will be back to big spending and high competitiveness within 1-2 years (hopefully).
  4. What if it comes down to (after this season) a 5 year extension for JD ($120M/5) vs a 6 year deal for Bogey($150M/6)? You can only chose 1.
  5. He might still get close to the MLB playing time he got last year by choosing this route.
  6. Maybe a bit bold but certainly attainable. Heck, he could hit 45 120.
  7. Assuming we lose Bogey & Porcello and are able to keep Betts, the questions then fall to JD, who might eat up a big chunk of the remaining spending budget vs JBJ. If we keep both, there might be just pennies left to fill any holes our farm can't fill.
  8. The opt out with $55M/2 left may hurt, but I'm loving 3 years more of Sale.
  9. 9:01pm: Sale has passed his physical, Rosenthal tweets, so all that remains is for the contract to be announced. Sale will earn $30MM in each of the first three seasons of the deal, after which time he has the right to opt out of the remaining two seasons. Those campaigns are valued at $27.5MM, meaning Sale will be deciding on two years and $55MM versus a trip onto the open market.
  10. Maybe Beni gets $5M and Betts gets $27M and my final number was about right.
  11. We may suffer in 2020 with DHernandez/Johnson/Velazquez as out 5th starter, but if we reset in 2020, we may be able to spend on a decent starter for 2021.
  12. D Hernandez may come through, but until it happens, I don't blame anyone for thinking the trend will continue.
  13. Okay, $157M for 13 players +$15M for player benefits= $172M. If you add 12 players at min wage, it's about $180M. The other 15 on the 40 man roster brings it to about $183M... That leaves a few million to upgrade those min wage players, and once we reset, we may go back to $40M over, which would play for some major upgrades. I still think we'll have a down year, when we reset, but it may not have to be more than 1-2 years.
  14. I read somewhere that the timing no longer matters, as long as it does not replace the existing contract.
  15. Did those extensions wipe out their 2019 salary? Trout's replaced the last 2 years of his contract. I think Sale's was strictly 2020 to 2024. (I'm not sure, if I am right.)
  16. My Pre-Season Top 10 1. D Hernandez 2. M Chavis 3. T Casas 4. B Dalbec 5. B. Mata 6. D. Feltman 7. J Groome 8. A Flores 9. D Diaz T10. T Houck & CJ Chatham
  17. $750K with incentives.
  18. I'm not sure it works that way anymore. This was an extension and not a re-write of his old contract. That's why it no longer matters about announcing after the year starts.
  19. True. I was looking at the wrong column.
  20. So, 2020... Millions 31 Price 29 Sale (22 JD opt out?) 17 Eovaldi 14 Pedey 5 Vaz____ Total :96M Arbs 2019 Player Est 2019 20 Betts (3 of 3) ~29 9 JBJ (4 of 4) ~12 4 ERod (3 of 4) ~7 2 Barnes (2 of 3) ~5 1 Hembree (2 of 3) ~2 1 Workman (3 of 3) ~1 1 Swihart (2 of 4) ~1 m Beni (1 of 3) ~2 Total $59M $155M for 13 players.
  21. Kimmi wanted 2 years, but at $29M a year, instead of $35+M, and not 6 or 7 years long, makes this a very fine deal, IMO.
  22. 2:30pm: Sale will receive $145MM over the five new seasons of the contract, Rosenthal tweets.
  23. I like Lin's defense at SS, but I'd be fine if we replaced him. Marco now is 14th on the Sox 40man roster seniority list!
  24. I would have been fine with $35M x 5! He's better than Price. He got less years than Price. I'd call this a "hometown discount."
