  1. ...or waiting for the season to begin to announce it.
  2. I can see your point, and you guys may be facing the same type of choices someday.
  3. No. I'm not sure he opts out at all, and if he doesn't we may have $130+M in 4 players in 2021: Betts, Sale, Price & JD. It will only be for 1 year, but 2020, with a Sale extension and Betts' arb will be a lot as well.
  4. ...and there are many reasons to keep each of them, too.
  5. Good points, but we are starting on the warm west coast.
  6. I doubt we stick with a 13 man staff for long, and we do have Holt & Nunez who can play IF/OF and a DH who can play OF. What hurts of bench flex the most is carrying 2 basically 1B only 1Bmen. 1B might be Swiharts best defensive position, too. (Holt can play 1B, too, and we have Chavis.)
  7. Pedey did not have further surgery. He's had a long time to get ready for ST'ing and opening day. It seems weird he'd need a week more, but I trust Sox management on this. (It's Mejia not Mojica.) Soxprospects.com has Colten Brewer as the 13th pitcher.
  8. Yes, they'd be happy if the Sox won only 3 of 4.
  9. How good is he on defense at any position, even catcher? How good is he on offense?
  10. MLBTR projected he'd make $24M/2!
  11. Could it be D Hernandez?
  12. Yes, Vaz was out from July 8th to August 31st. In that time, here's who caught those 48 games: 35 Leon 11 Swihart 2 Butler Leon caught six straight games twice while Vaz was out. While Vaz was available, here were Leon's longest stretches: 3 games in a row: once 2 games in a row: twice If Cora really believed in Swihart's catching abilities, last year, I think we'd have seen Swihart start more often. Maybe Swihart improved over the winter, but it's hard to imagine such a large change in mindset by Cora from last August to now.
  13. I must have missed that. With so many bubble pitchers out of options, that makes sense, too.
  14. It wouldn't surprise me, if Pedey stays on the DL longer, and not just for this reason. Someone else might be added to the DL (or phantom DL), when Pedey returns.
  15. This pushes the need to trade or DFA Leon or Swihart back a week or more.
  16. Stev Adams on Pedey... Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia will open the season on the injured list, manager Alex Cora announced to reporters today (link via WEEI’s Rob Bradford). Cora stressed that there have been no setbacks for Pedroia in his return from the knee issues that limited him to three games last season. Rather, the veteran is simply still in the process of building up to be able to handle a full workload. He’ll play in games every other day for the remainder of exhibition games before returning to extended Spring Training to continue building up strength. Pedroia, Bradford writes, feels he will be sufficiently built up but didn’t voice frustration with the team’s decision to proceed with caution. Based on his comments, it doesn’t sound like he’s looking at a particularly lengthy absence to open the year. “It’s only, I think, a week or something, the plan that they set,” said Pedroia. “If it’s being smart for a week and we make sure I respond great to everything thrown at me then it’s a good decision.”
  17. With the state of catching in MLB these days being pretty low, I'm certain some team would give Swihart a chance. His ability to play other positions would help.
  18. Your response was about past OF WAR. The article was about the 2019 possibility.
  19. If JD is still on the books, we may have $130+M tied up in 4 players.
  20. Well, you misread the whole article's intention, so....
  21. The article was clearly about expectations for 2019 not past WAR. I doubt they come close to the best WAR ever, even if they count JD's WAR as a DH/OF'er, but with improvements by JBJ and Beni, they could end up with a damn good combined WAR.
  22. I really don't think a great ST'ing increases or decreases a player's value all that much. Swihart might be slightly more valuable now than he was at the end of last year.
  23. It's as fixed as wrestling.
  24. My paternal grandmother was Irish (an O'Hara). Domers missed the tourney, again.
  25. "Honest" may be a stretch. I'm still convinced the NBA is fixed. I still like watching college sports. For many of these kids, it's their one moment of glory.
