To me, we need to spend our very limited budget on several players, and signing Porcello to $8M a year would take up all of our spending budget and leave nothing for the pen, 1B, C and a replacement for JBJ- not that $8M will fill all those slots. -
Something like this should be part of the next deal.

Or, they know he will not be selected, and they took the risk of losing him. I'm sure he's not someone they have big plans for, but I still think he may end up being a decent ML platoon player someday. He does very well vs RHPs, and that's the bigger part of any platoon. Splits vs RHPs 2019 AAA: .898 (21 HRs in 287 ABs) 2018 AAA .793 (5 Hrs in 70 ABs) AA .968 (13 HRs in 205 ABs) That's an OPS over .900 with 39 HRs in 562 ABs. He may very well get a look at some point.

You misunderstand my position. I think he will get $9-11M/1 or $17-20M/2, but I do not want us to be the ones paying that much. I thought what we had to pay Price was "too high" but necessary. I do not think signing Porcello is necessary or pragmatic.

Is 3B different in the minors? It's not complicated to keep Dalbec at 3B, if he is the real deal and is viewed as a much better defender. I'm not saying I'm for the move, and I'd like Dalbec to show he can hit ML pitching before I move Devers anywhere.

I doubt we could get both of these guys with Peerson...maybe one is asking too much.

The Red Sox reached out to free-agent utilityman Brock Holt about a new deal after the season, but there haven’t been discussions since they hired Chaim Bloom as their chief baseball officer Oct. 28, Holt told Barstool Sports’ Section 10 podcast (hat tip to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com). Although other teams have contacted Holt, he revealed there’s “nothing serious” brewing between him and any clubs. MLBTR predicts a two-year, $8MM contract for the versatile Holt, who’s coming off back-to-back solid seasons at the plate. The 31-year-old batted .297/.369/.402 in 295 PA in 2019, which is looking more and more like his last season as a member of the Red Sox.

That wasn't my point. We made a great choice letting Jacoby go. That choice is still great, despite us wasting the savings on HRam and Pablo. (BTW, we have paid other players since Ellsbury left, and one could argue that was the savings money.

That's a reach. It was a reach to even equate the Ellsbury signing with HRam + Pabloato. Then, a reach from the reach. How's this for a reach? We got Kopech for the comp pick from Ells and Sale for Kopech.

Yes, but it is $5M more. Makes me think the $11M/1 projected value for Porcello might be close, too.

CWS sign Grandal to $18.25M x 4 years! It does not appear like salaries are going down or leveling off.

If you look at what much lesser and/or older pitchers have gotten recently, you won't be surprised if he makes $11M/1 or $20M/2.

We used an enlarged pen all this year. With 26 men next year, the need for 210 IP is lessened to a small extent. It's not that I don't value IP. I was a huge Porcello defender up until 2019. 12 starts with 5 or more runs allowed is just too much for the extra IP to outweigh, IMO. Yes, the IP had value, but overall, it's not worth $8M. If he pitches like 2018, like he might, I'd offer more, but he's now on the wrong side of 30, and I think it's time to move on.

1) 4.75 was better than Porcello's 2019. 2) Even adjusting to inflation, he wasn't about to make $8-10M a year. 3) Part of Wake's bad numbers was because we often did not have a catcher that could catch the knuckleball very well. Yes, I defended him towards the end, too, when his ERA did go over 5.00, but I was not expecting 5.00+ those years. I also did a painstakingly difficult study of every earned run he allowed one year (maybe his second to last year) and found many of the runs allowed were on infield and bloop hits and WPs. I also did a study where I found the SP'er who started the game after Wake had an ERA about 0.50 lower than when not starting after Wake. No, I would not pay the 2009-2011 Wake $8-11M to pitch for us in 2020.

210 IP of crap is not helpful. 200+ IP of good pitching is. Which Porcello shows up in 2020?

I cheered when the Yanks overpaid Jacoby by what I felt was by at least double his worth.

I'm fine keeping Devers at 3B, but if we are going to use Dalbec next year, and they think he's much better on defense at 3B, the move makes sense. I'm not sure anything can confuse with Devers, but there is a risk, agreed.

I think he'll get $8M/1 with an easy $2M bonus based on GS'd and/or IP.

You seem to put a lot of stock in that 17 IP to end the season. I do think there's a good chance Porcello bounces back next year. I think some team will pay him $10M/1 for 2020. I hope it's not us.
