  1. It's not about getting someone good for him: it's about making salary space for someone we may need at another position. (I agree, maybe nobody would want him.)
  2. I'm not sure, if there is any data to support what I'm about to say, but it is hard to project which RP'ers will be good in winter. I think seeing how someone is doing up to July may be a better way at finding a RP'er that will help us end the season on a good note.
  3. I doubt they will trade Moreland, but if they need some budget space to get a better (more expensive) pitcher, and Chavis and/or Pearce is hitting well, it's a slight possibility.
  4. FYI, some ex-Sox 2019 numbers: OPS .859 Moncada (7 HRs & 25 rbi) .803 Sandoval .689 Swihart (.692 counting his time with the Sox) .678 Margot (was .675 last year) .573 T Shaw AAA .641 M Dubon ERA 1.00 Buttrey (18 IP and 1.06 WHIP) 1.41 Lester (32 IP & 1.03 WHIP) 2.48 J Beeks (29.0 & 1.18 WHIP) 2.75 F Montas (39.1 & 1.22 WHIP) 5.93 Pomeranz (30.1 IP & 1.62 WHIP) 10.33 Kelly (13.1 IP & 1.95 WHIP) AAA 6.37 L Allen (29.2/1.52) I'm not saying I wish we had these guys back. (List is not every ex-Sox player.)
  5. If Pedey, Nunez or Holt get healthy and start playing well (not impossible to think one might), and Chavis continues hitting, the idea is not a bad one. Besides, Moreland almost always hits poorly after the midway point.
  6. He did walk and score a run, and he had a SAC, so he wasn't completely useless last night.
  7. He does appear to have "plus" range and pretty good reflexes, which is more important at 3B than range), but he needs to improve his footwork and throwing accuracy. Both are skills than can be learned and improved upon. I have not given up on him at 3B, but I've gotten close a few times. He does seem to be better defensively than Chavis based on what I have heard.
  8. Unless we have injury issues in July, I think we go light. We'll try to stay under the max cap, and may pick up some pen help and maybe some bench help.
  9. I was 16 in '75, but I still remember crying after game 7. I was at Notre Dame, when we lost in 1978. That sucked royally.
  10. I totally agree, but Devers may still be able to improve enough to stay at 3B, although his -8.3 UZR/150 so far this year warns he may not. We do have the first base lot opening up next year, so maybe the two share the corner IF slots until JD is no longer around at DH.
  11. That alone was reason enough not to sign Kelly.
  12. It was hard enough being a Sox fan back then, but the mismanagement made it exceedingly rough.
  13. I think I remember reading that Darrell Johnson said Cooper "would never hit in MLB," this after a decent rookie season in 1975.
  14. They traded away Scott for his best years and then traded Cooper for his declining years. The first Scott trade was bad, but I can forgive it, because it made me a Sox fan.
  15. Those guys did not have big K rates. I did have concerns, but they were minor. Here's a good example: I think Devers will have a better offensive career than Beni, but I have a higher concern for Devers.
  16. It's a crap shoot. No wonder DD chose not to play a game where the odds are stacked against you.
  17. I thought Pedey should have started the season on the 60 day.
  18. We did get some good "on paper" players back, but the heart and soul of the team was ripped out and stomped on. It made it hard being a Sox fan. Some notable and heart-breaking trades and let-go's from way back when... 1971: Traded George Scott, Lonborg, Billy C & Ken Brett for Tommy Harper, Marty Pattin and Lew Krausse. This was a bad trade, as Scott went on to have many good to great years with the Brewers, but I was a big Brewer fan at the time. Tommy Harper was my favorite player, and I switched to being a Sox fan after the trade. We had moved from Milwaukee to Portland. ME that summer of 1071. (Later, in 1976, we traded Cecil Cooper for Scott and Carbo.) We traded Carbo for Danny Darwin & Tom Murphy- Darwin was good. 1972: Sparky Lyle for Danny Cater (horrible deal) 1973: Reggie Smith & Ken Tatum for Rick Wise. 1973: Ben Oglivie for Dick McAuliffe 1978: Sold Jim Willoughby to the Cards. 1978: Luis Tiant was granted free agency & signed with the Yanks. 1978: Traded Bill Lee for Stan Papi 1980: Traded Burleson & Hobson for Carney Lansford, Rick Miller & Mark Clear. 1981: Failed to offer a contract in time for Carlton Fisk, thereby losing him to free agency. (We could have at least signed and traded him.) 1981: Traded Fred Lynn and Steve Renko for Frank Tanana & Joe Rudi. 1982: Traded Carney Lansford for Tony Armas
  19. Want some Soup Campbell for an appetizer?
  20. Bill Lee not retiring as a Sox was almost the final straw. The way we lost Fisk was 100 times worse than the Lester initial contract offer fiasco. It really all started with the dumb Cecil Cooper trade.
  21. A BB and a SAC might be the best we can hope for.
  22. I think he broke his back crashing into the CF wall (before they put up the padding). He did get hurt a lot, but he gets a free pass from me, because he played the game all out to win. Loved the kid. Broke my heart when they traded him and Burleson.
  23. Love this stuff! I remember big Bob Veale.
  24. 2 is crooked, but was thinking 7 or 8.
  25. Thanks for the info. I became a Sox fan in the early 70's. I had heard of Radatz, but I never saw him play.
