  1. Not on the first ballot.
  2. I never said that. Being bad but not horrible might still allow you to get in. Or, if you are a great hitter (Jeter was not), it could outweigh being a really bad fielder. Jeter was a good hitter, a good runner and a horrible defender at an important position. It's close, but I say no- certainly on the first ballot, but it looks like I'm in a tiny minority on this case. How many players get in with a unanimous vote first ballot? Do you think Jeter deserves that?
  3. Well, my point was about 2020, and you mentioned him.
  4. He was ready when we needed him, at least.
  5. I totally agree, and while signing to a minor league deal can't hurt, I'd like us to sign healthier and more reliable pitchers.
  6. Bloom may not have liked Shaw, even if he had $4M to spend. I gotta think he'd have signed a few guys already, if he had a budget to work with.
  7. No action to back the words.
  8. What's not to love, but it won't be easy.
  9. I wouldn't mess with him, but he was a starter once.
  10. I doubt there's even a 50-50 chance we guess a trade like this right.
  11. D Hern was a starter for a while.
  12. The first inning often sets the tone of the game, too. I also think the mediocre pitchers who come in after the opener probably will do better without the pressure of starting and, as you pointed out, starting out against hitters that are not the 1-2-3 in the line-up.
  13. Agreed, and Myers does have some upside. He's likely to have a better season than Chavis at 1B in 2020.
  14. I think the Padres can get more than Chavis and Walden for Yates alone. I don't want Beni in CF, especially if we end up losing Betts in RF. I'd add to the deal to get Yates. I'd give Price, Chavis, Walden & Barnes (a gross overpay by the simulator) for Myers, Yates and Margot. Maybe, Price, Chavis & Barnes for Myers and Yates.
  15. That might be incentive enough, especially when the best alternative is to start Velazquez.
  16. Doesn't DHern throw just as hard in 1-2 innings later in the game, too?
  17. They don't need JBJ, even if we take Myers and Margot. This is better: Price (+$3M), Chavis & Walden for Myers, Margot & Yates I'm not sure SD would part with Yates for just this. More likely: Price & Chavis for Margot (CF for us after we trade JBJ elsewhere) and Myers (1B for us).
  18. I forgot about Pham. All the more reason to get Margot back, but no way will they want JBJ. Price, Chavis & Walden & cash for Myers, Yates & Margot. More likely: Price & Chavis (no cash) for Myers & Margot.
  19. Myers's contract only counts as $13.83 on the lux tax. That's what makes this deal make so much sense. The Padres don't care about the lux tax- only actual salary. His salary is $22.5 x 2 plus a $1M buy out. The Padres pay about $9M x 3 more for Price than Myers. The Sox save about $17.2M x 3 on the lux tax budget. (We are over by about $17-18M, right now!) I'm kind of surprised there hasn't been much talk about this deal anywhere but sites like this.
  20. Actually, Duran adds a closer value but plays the wrong position for SD. I'd give Price and Chavez for Yates & Myers in a heartbeat. (I'd even give some cash, too.) I'd jump for joy over this accepted deal (minor overpay by BOS): Price, JBJ, Chavis & $6M for Myers, Yates & Margot
  21. Nope. Maybe DHern or Walden?
  22. I don't think anyone doubts he "has the stuff:" it's about being ready or helpful for 2020.
  23. Isn't Myers an OF'er for the Padres? We'd likely play him at 1B, if we trades Price and JBJ for him and ____.
  24. This whole budget situation has kept us from jumping on some seemingly cheap deals for big named players. We need to get Bloom some room to move by dumping some large salaries.
