  1. They are all pretty close and equally unpromising. He's ranked 44th just behind Kyle Hart on soxprospects.com. Is there a reason you think he should be lower on my list?
  2. He'd be on my top 10 list of SSs I'd want on my team for more than a decade. HOF? Maybe-maybe not.
  3. I've never said WAR is the be-all-end-all tool. I'm very stingy on who belongs in the HOF. I'm not changing my criteria over Jeter. I don't think Schilling belongs, either, so it's not a Yankee thing. I'm also very stingy on those that get in just because they played 20 years of better than mediocre ball. I think Jeter's defense was so bad, it lowered his overall value to pint where he's close, but I'd vote no. Maybe by his last chance ballot I might change my mind. I like WAR. I use WAR, at times but not often. I think it has flaws, and maybe this case highlights one of them. Jeter was a horrible fielder for more than half his career. He played a position where defense is extremely important. Maybe I over value SS defense, and I'm dead wrong, but it's who I am. I would not vote for Jeter on the first ballot and probably every one until maybe his last year on the ballot.
  4. I felt he could, but was he really that good, last year?
  5. Agreed. The arb avoidance means nothing. He'd have maybe made $500K to $1M more or less had he went to arb. I project he gets $350M/10 or more from someone. Harper got $330M/13. Machado got $300M/10. I'd probably go as high as $350M/10 but would try to get $350M/11 or have some options at the end, so we could get out after 8 or 9 years, maybe something like this: 39M x 8 ($312M) $20M option ($10M buyout) year 9 $18M option ($8M buyout) year 10 This comes to $312M/8, $332M/9 or $350M/10 If he says no, then we can feel content we offered more than a fair deal, and we'd hopefully spend that money elsewhere.
  6. Kinda felt it was implied, but I guess you're right.
  7. Agreed, and even if Jones >>> Vizquel, the SS is so important, defensively, that both are highly deserving.
  8. Eduardo Rodriguez, Red Sox: $8.975MM versus $8.3MM (Jon Heyman of MLB Network, via Twitter) Andrew Benintendi, Red Sox: $4.15MM versus $3.4MM (Jon Heyman of MLB Network, via Twitter)
  9. Is Devers really the 4th best defensive 3Bman in MLB? https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/infield-defense?year=2019&team=&range=year&min=q&pos=5&roles=&viz=show (Bogey is 23rd at SS.)
  10. No other GM can say that!
  11. Hey, the guy just signed... Mookie Freakin' Betts!
  12. Mookie settled because he would not have made much more no matter what. I don't think the odds changed at all. All clubs knew he'd get about $27-28M. Nothing changed after this deal was announced.
  13. That's a lot of holes for any farm system to fill- let alone a bottom 10 one.
  14. Here's my list of our worst players on the 40 man roster: 1. Weber 2. Reyes 3. Shawaryn 4. Arauz 5. Aybar 6. Hart 7. Marco 8. Osich 9. Poyner Velazquez, Mazza, Wilson, Brewer, Brasier, Lakins, Lin, Hembree Wow, looking at this list really shows just how shallow our roster is, right now. That's 17 guys not even counting Pedey. Almost half the roster!
  15. They stuck with Marco for so long. He's finally looking healthy, and he gets DFA'd. I'm not saying it's a bad move. They probably guess he's the least likely man on their 40 man roster to get claimed, but he was not my 40th player.
  16. I'd agree with that. It's not delusional to think a horrible fielding player who plays the most important defensive position, except catcher might not belong in the HOF.
  17. You think my man marco will be claimed or end up in our minor league system?
  18. His current contract was to avoid arb. He'd have gotten way over $34M this year on the open market. The issue is for how many years. He might be worth $60-70M for just one year.
  19. Totally agree. Not even close.
  20. Who cares, if ARod offered to move? (Not that he was all that much better on D than Jete at SS.
  21. Manny was, perhaps, the greatest RH'd hitter of our era and maybe even alltime. Jeter was a good hitting SS. I think it's apples to oranges. Besides, a sucky defensive LF'er does not hurt the team as much as a sucky defensive SS.
  22. Selfishness has nothing to do with my opinion. He was a very good hitter, especially for a SS, but to me his defense was so bad it made him just an overall very good player- maybe even great, but not great enough for the HOF. I'm pretty tight with my HOF expectations. I'm not even sure Schilling belongs. I'm not delusional- some voters are.
  23. Cots projected: (actual) 27.5 Betts (27.0) 11.5 JBJ (11.0) 4.25 Beni 3.25 Workman (3.5) 3.00 Barnes (3.1) 1.50 Hembree (1.6) Not much difference, so far. Any news on Beni?
  24. So, you're surprised one voter wasn't stupid enough to vote for him? Someone did vote for Giambi & Konerko, so we can rest easily tonight, knowing stupidity still reigns in the voting. If I had a vote, I'd go... Walker Bonds Clemens Manny Schilling is close- maybe last ballot material. I'd never vote for one of the worst defensive SS of his era to the HOF.
