I recall big Papi going through some long stretches where he flailed at low and outside pitches- mostly breaking balls, then worked it out and lessened those occurrences to the point where he was back to being big Papi. Who knows if JD will work it out? We do know the nobody works harder and studied mechanics more than JD, so I’m keeping the faith, for now.

A starter will come up against the top of the order a third time after 6 innings of perfect pitching. A lot g man who comes into a game in the 2nd inning, assuming a 1-2-3 first, would not face the top of the order the third time until after 8 innings of perfect ball (game is over).

There is still an advantage to knocking the opponent’s better pitchers out by pitch count, but it seems less advantageous, these days.

Yes. You can select a one inning pitcher that matches up well with the top of the opponent’s order, and the long guy you bring in next does not usually start off facing the best 4 hitters, unless the batted 9 guys in the first. For those who believe in the third time facing the same batters is a big concern, the long guy, if he’s doing well, can pitch 4-5 inning without facing the top of the order more than twice.

I’m not sure if the opener strategy will catch on and spread, but it has worked for some teams. The plan need not mess up the other 4 starters’ rythym, or the pitcher you use for 4-5 innings after you pull the opener, if that guy has been used in relief for a while up to the point where he’s needed. For example, say we’ve been using Andriese out of the pen for a month, sometimes for 3-5 IP, then a starter needs to miss a start. It’s not messing Andriese up by brining him in the game after an opener, and probably not even if he is used that way for more games than just one here and there. To me, the jury is still out on the concept, but hey, I’m for robo umps.

I’m concerned, but not much more than I am about Sale, Eovaldi, Richards, ERod, Barnes, DHern, Cordero and many others. I’m expecting at least .800. If he’s at .650 by the end of May, yes..

They didn’t do too well in games started by traditional starters either.

We have Andriese and Whitlock, so we could go “opener” or pen game.

If we go with 14 pitchers, and some are long men like Andriese and Whitlock or 2-3 inning guys like DHern and Valdez, maybe having a pen game here and there wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

I totally agree, but one could argue this would be the perfect season to try Devers at 1B and to see what Dalbec can do at 3B.

My guess is Dalbec is better than Devers on defense at 3B, so if Devers fails to improve, a flip could happen over the winter. It might take a clear disparity to move Devers off 3B.

I think Devers could be very good at 1B. I’ve read good things about Casas, too. I think he’ll be called up in 2022 or September.

The big unknown is who is better at 1B defense, Casas or Devers, assuming Dalbec moves to 3B. My guess is the choices will be easy mid season or next winter.

Yes, and Valdez, Whitlock and maybe Taylor and Sawamura, too.

Andriese pitched multiple innings in STing and will likely be our long man, so moving him to starter, if needed, seems like choice #1, if someone goes down. Choice 2 could be Houck, Seabold & Whitlock.

If GMS and managers went by promise over the pretty much known quantities, we’d see a lot of changes in MLB. On the Sox, DHern would be our closer. I certainly see more upside with Houck but maybe a lower floor, too. The options make it tough to pick Houck as we will likely use 20+ pitchers this year, and Houck should get plenty of opportunities to show he belongs. Plus, Houck will be on Limited IP or pitch count anyway.
