  1. cots has Torres with 3 years of team control (all arbs) and Castillo with just 3 arb years. Although Torres will likely make more in 4 years than Castillo makes in 3, you'd think the extra year would make Torres gain value over Castillo. That Trade Value site must just think Castillo is way better than Torres.
  2. I'm still thinking that in these times, the best strategy may be to hold back and then mop up on several bargain deals after the major dominoes fall. I know that's not what many want, and big splash names increase viewership and ticket sales, but there are several ways to get competitive. I could see us signing 4-5 bargain basement free agents that are decent to good and trading for one big name SP'er.
  3. Of course. Those were depth signings you really have very little faith in Bloom.
  4. I think we trade for a SPer like Taillon and sign 2-3 RPers
  5. I agree it is likely we add a2b man and CFer but it’s not a sure thing. We may avoid adding a 1Bman.
  6. Hernandez is very capable at 2B and in CF. I could see him playing about 50-50 at each. While Arroyo does not excite me, either, neither does Beni in CF or Renfroe playing RF FT and Verdugo in CF. If we add only Hernandez and no other OF'ers what's worse? Arroyo/Munoz/Chatham/Arauz/Chavis at 2B or a not-ready-for-prime-time Duran in CF or Beni in LF FT, Renfroe in RF full time and Verdugo in CF? Now, if we add a CF'er and Hernandez, I agree, Hernandez is the FT 2Bman. On Munoz, if he does well in AAA, he could very well end up back on the 40 man roster and playing 2B/Utility for the Sox in 2021, especially if we don't add a 2Bman.
  7. RIP, Phil. Also, we missed KC Jones.
  8. Another factor to consider is whether the struggling player is taking up a roster spot that someone else on the 40 man roster looks capable of filling well. As of right now, our roster is not deep with players I'm thinking deserve a shot over Beni, JD or anyone else that may be struggling. As for Beni & JD, I wouldn't count their 2020 struggles as a full season. Plus, Beni was dealing with injury issues. Their trade value is pretty low, right now, so we'll roll the dice and see what happens.
  9. I like that he can play a good defensive CF, as well. If Arroyo or Munoz do well in 2021, maybe he'll spend a lot of time in CF. He can also spell our starters at 3B, SS, 1B and corner OF. He'll make having a DH only DH easier to handle. He'll make other roster decisions easier, due to his flexibility. I hope we sign him.
  10. By all accounts, Bloom is working hard to fine the right pieces needed to get us back to the top. It may take some time, but I think we'll do pretty good along the way to our next ring.
  11. Hernandez has a bit of pop in his bat. He averages about 25 HRs per 700 PAs- career. He has a .744 OPS over the last 4 seasons. Here are his defensive metrics (some small sample sizes): 2B (1263 innings) -6.2 UZR/150 and +18 DRS CF (1109 innings) +8.4 UZR/150 and +4 DRS LF (603 innings) +18 UZR & +14 DRS SS (536 innings) +10.4 UZR & +3 DRS RF (342 innings) +11.9 UZR & +3 DRS 3B (155 innings) -28.4 UZR & -1 DRS 1B (89 innings) +17.4 UZR & -2 DRS
  12. He can play 2B & CF, among many other positions, so it makes sense. Maybe he's the only new, non pitching piece we add, this winter.
  13. The problem is, you don't want to sell at an all time low value on guys like Beni & JD.
  14. I'm not actually complaining. I'm glad Bloom is waiting for the real bargains.
  15. We could still use a CF'er (or RF'er, if we move Verdugo to CF), and I'm not giving up on the notion of getting Kiermaier from the Rays. The issue has to be who we get with him. I'd love to get Anderson, but I doubt that is workable without us opening another whole somewhere else (Vazquez?). More likely we could get Fairbanks or Fleiming- maybe Yarbrough without having to give too much back due to the negative value of Kiermaier.
  16. Not much more than JD or Sale.
  17. The financial landscape has changed drastically over the past few months. Maybe there will be more incentive to move him, now.
  18. Yes, and guys like Josh Bell and maybe Adam Frazier.
  19. I guess that the amount he signed for shows he's not viewed as a "middle of rotation starter" like MLBTR called him.
  20. True, and teams looking to dump salaries need teams willing to take on those deals. There aren't many of those- in theory.
  21. Only a small fraction of the quality players available, right now, including trade candidates have been acquired. We need to let the winter play out. I'm thrilled to know we are being "aggressive." Most teams are being passive or aggressively trying to dump quality players. My sense is that by winter's end, there will be a lot of bargain basement deals, even if just 1 year deals, where Bloom can work his magic.
  22. Maybe they wanted him a lot but did not think he was worth that much, or think they can get someone better for the same coin. Also, do we know the guy signed with the highest bidder?
  23. Maybe they made this signing, knowing they will be dumping enough salary to pay for it. I'm thinking maybe 20 teams are looking to dump some higher priced player or two. (Some we may not even view as being overpaid or even paid all that much.)
  24. I can't disagree, here. I've been to NS several times, and it is wonderful.
  25. I agree, but I wasn't talking about 1 or 2% pay differentials, and there's more to financial bottom lines than just contract amount and length. There's taxes, cost of living and more. There are precious few that leave a significant amount of money on the table and make their choices based on other factors. We might argue about how much is "significant," but I'm still thinking my 99% number is pretty close.
