  1. If Brasier and Bazardo are ready, they may get the call, first. Wecould also demote Rios and bring up 2.
  2. Some good news, Nick. Add Houck to the list and maybe we can get a big infusion of talent without any big trades. Chavis for Santana Houck for Andriese Brasier for Rios Sale/Bazardo/Duran for Workman (and/or Chavis)
  3. Perez pitched well, too. Bobby Dee is a BB away from the .700 mark. Kike even got on base 3 times!
  4. I never worry about Devers' bat. He always bounces back.
  5. He's been struggling of late. Glad to see he can help pull us out of this mini-funk.
  6. He's shown serious signs of turning things around. 2 weeks is still a small sample size, but 2 weeks ago, just about nobody was saying he deserves to keep playing.
  7. Booby Dee with like 2 triples in 10 days. JD with a big blast! NICE!
  8. It's as fair as the official game scorer calling some plays hits and some errors. A line has to be drawn somewhere.
  9. I don't see it as a penalty. The guy should have not reached base. It counts as an out in OBP and SLG, as it should.
  10. In a way that makes OPS seem better, since sacrifices are awarded some value on half of the component, making it still have some value.
  11. The simple fact is OPS tells us more than BA HR RBI- old school numbers. It does factor in BBs, 2B more than 1B, but yes, no SBs, which isn't part of batting. It's flawed and does count some things twice, ut since it counts singles twice but BA only once, it does weigh a single more.
  12. Yanks just went up on the A's 5-4 in the 8th.
  13. Worst OPS in last 7 days: .347 Santana .364 Kike .400 Plawecki .529 Arroyo .563 Marwin Maybe we should try Plawecki at lead off. We've tried all the other worst ones. OK, yes, 7 days is too small a sample size. Here's 14 days: .296 Santana .555 Marwin .586 Kike .646 JD .733 Plawecki .761 Renfroe .767 Dalbec .831 Arroyo Last 28 days: .429 Santana .469 Kike .519 Plawecki .579 Dalbec .577 Marwin (Arroyo at .820)
  14. There literally is no worse choice, except maybe a pitcher. (Whitlock and Richards have as many hits as Santana does over the last week or so.)
  15. Maybe the "biggest flaw" not "Major" might have been a better choice of wording. If you tinker with weighting BBs and HBPs, you change the meaning of the new stat. I brought up the HBP, because it seems like a stand alone occurrence. Sometimes, it does involve the "skill" of the batter, but usually, it is a mistake by the pitcher. I guess one could call a BB, 4 mistakes, or even a HR a pitching mistake.
  16. There was a time when Martin Perez had numbers that made him look like our number one or two. That was as far back as June 7th! (4-2 3.09) Now, he looks like the same old Perez. (4-4 4.52) Last 2 starts combined: 3.1IP 12 hits 4 BB 2 K 11 ER 4 HRs 29.70 ERA 1.273 OPS Against .500 BAbip Could just 3 starts turn our #1 into a candidate for demotion to the pen (or worse)? He has no options remaining.
  17. I feel so much better, now. Thanks.
  18. It certainly seems better, but the major flaw is that it treats a BB the same as a single. Many times, there is little difference, but enough times, there is. How do sacrifices play into this? (Just don't count it as a PA?) BTW, does OBP count HBP's?
  19. One important factor: how are other teams in the running being affected by "grips?" We only lose ground, if our guys are affected more than the others.
  20. As of now, yes, but when Casas is ready, the choice may be different, depending on Devers contract or pending free agency. To me, Devers is a "keeper," but if he is to become a DH, he shouldn't be paid $25M+ for 6+ years. (I don't see him as a DH until maybe age 34 or higher.)
  21. SLG may be underrated, but it dominates OPS by more than it should. Maybe a truer representation of overall value might be a metric like this: (3 x OBP) + (2 x SLG)/ 5. We'd still see ranges from .450 to .1050 covering just about everyone with a large enough sample size, with the vast majority falling between .650 and .850.
  22. I still think Devers would make a fine 1Bman. His quickness and glove are rarely the issue on defense. Take away the bad throws, and Devers is a plus defender at 3B. There is no reason to think he can't be an easy plaus at 1B with a little practice and a short learning curve window. We can deal with Casas, when we have to, and the bigger issue is, who plays 3B? Dalbec? (Doubtful) Most likely a FA (or move Bogey there and get a SS.)
  23. Verdugo will not likely demand or get anywhere near what Betts got. I do not think the Sox are going totally small market philosophy, here. The last coiple winters seemed a bit that way, but Bloom had to navigate through some tough waters. I think we will still offer deals like Eovaldi ($17M x 4) and Bogey ($20M per year with an opt out) with an occasional Sale-type deal when they timing seems just right. I think this winter will tell a lot about how we will be looking at out budget and financial priorities. We should have a lot to spend. We don't have a major roster squeeze coming up, despite having 4-6 Rule 5 players we should add, but a clear choice will be made: 1) Do we sign 3-4 moderate to expensive free agents (SP, RP, RP, ???) and fill the rest of the 40 with some nice in-system additions? 2) Do we sign 4-6 low-cost to moderate free agents (maybe one on the expensive side) and end up trading away some of our promising talent to make room for them? I can see 3-5 players that could be DFA'd or traded without feeling like we went too far. Replacing the 2021 ERod might not be hard, but adding any meaningful SP'er to the mix will be costly. Replacing Barnes & Ottavino will be difficult, and spending large on a closer and top set up man is not my idea of spending well. Marwin & Santana can easily be replace- probably from the farm. I think we will begin to see the type of team Bloom will form, once his checkbook is opened up and far fewer roster slots need to be filled.
  24. Me, too. Not just because I hate the Yanks. IMO, they are still the team to beat. Expect some trades by them, maybe soon, to make them better.
