  1. Yes, and as much as I try to avoid those inclinations, I too have succumbed. (The "sucky Six" being my latest.)
  2. I'm talking 8th inning stressful situations. While the 7th inning can be high leverage, we have not used Taylor very much in Late & Close situations. He pitched the 9th in our 11-6 win on May 6th and the 9th in a 6-3 loss on April 21st. Valdez was not used from April 24 to May 6th (injury? no IL). He's been used mostly in the 6th or 7th and once in the 9th in a 6-2 win and the 8th in a 4-1 loss. Neither has been used in a tight game beyond the 7th inning in over 5 weeks.
  3. Taylor did very well in 47.1 IP in 2019. .642 OPS against 1.183 WHIP 3.11 FIP 11.8 K/9 Let's hope he can come close to those numbers, this year.
  4. Apparently Kike will be activated before Tuesday's game. That is for Arauz. That leaves Arroyo for _______. DFA Brice or send Cordero or Chavis down. (You all know my choice, but I doubt it's Bloom's choice.) Santana for _______.
  5. Getting Kike and Arroyo back effectively add 2 OF'er to the mix (Kike and Marwin, who will be freed from IF need.) I'd like to see Cordero sent down for Kike. Brice DFA'd for Arroyo. When Santana reaches his opt out date, we send Chavis back down, assuming nobody else goes on the IL.
  6. Some of these numbers might be surprising. (note some very small sample sizes) OPS Against in High Leverage (PAs) .000 Sawamura (3) .267 Barnes (38) .500 Valdez (4) Yes, try him some more .644 Ottavino (47) not as bad as I expected .661 Taylor (8) more, here too? .733 DHern (31) too many PAs here .800 Whitlock (15) .810 Andriese (36) very bad, lately 1.167 Houck (7) 1.333 Brice (3) thank God only 3. Late & Close: .325 Barnes (53) .507 Taylor (17) .553 Ottavino (64) .696 Andriese (41) .909 Sawamura (11) 1.000 Houck (4) 1.125 Whitlock (16) 1.136 DHern (29) Seems like we need to move away from DHern & Andriese, late in games, and start using Valdez & Taylor more often, but then again, maybe they are about to slump.
  7. You don't worry when they bring in anyone not named Barnes?
  8. Nobody was playing baseball in April, except on the big club. Nobody was ready to be called up. We'd have used Marwin, instead of Cordero, but Arroyo and Kike got hurt at the same time- the exact wrong time. There really was little we could do, and with 14 pitchers, our options were limited. Had Chavis broke ST'ing with the big club, we could have used him at 2B and Marwin in LF. We are getting real close to there being some choices, but then again, Arroyo and Kike come off the IL, soon, so we may still not see any call-ups, except maybe Santana, when his opt out expires. Arauz will be the first sent down, and I hope Cordero or a pitcher will be sent down over Chavis. We might be surprised by Cordero being the first sent down for Kike.
  9. Nope. Apparently, a list of players has already been agreed upon. It was just a matter of scouts needing some time to actually see these guys play a little before choosing. The Mets PTBNL seems the most interesting, as it's just one, and the player they got from the Royals was pretty highly rated.
  10. We just passed the quarter season mark. Here are our OPS leaders: 1.025 JD 1.013 Bogey .937 Devers .784 Verdugo .766 Plawecki .723 Hernandez .710 Arroyo .657 Dalbec .656 Vaz .649 Renfroe .624 Marwin .448 Cordero Last 14 Days: 1.283 Plawecki 1.278 Hernandez 1.111 Bogey .942 Devers .807 Dalbec .789 JD .775 Arauz .769 Renfroe .741 Chavis .666 Vaz .662 Marwin .630 Verdugo .538 Cordero Less than 28 PAs .775 Arauz .741 Chavis OPS Against 2021 RP'ers: .376 Barnes .393 Valdezs .450 Bazardo (12 PAs) .609 Ottavino (not bad considering 12 BBs in 75 PAs) .612 Whitlock .744 DHern .799 Sawamura .806 Houck (2 GS'd) .831 Taylor .867 Brice .867 Andriese Starters: .602 Pivetta .647 Eovaldi .670 Perez .735 Richards .759 ERod Last 14 Days: .350 Taylor .368 Barnes .429 Bazardo .439 Valdez .557 Ottavino .675 DHern .688 Sawamura .984 Brice 1.006 Whitlock 1.176 Andriese .556 Perez (3 GS) .598 Pivetta (3GS) .647 Eovaldi (3) .744 Richards (2) .898 ERod (2) Do we start using Valdez & Taylor more often and in higher leverage situations?
  11. Yes, and I know Barnes is not on pace to set career highs in pitches or batters faced, but we are getting close to using him too much and for too long. I'm just saying no more than what we are doing, now. I think Cora has used Barnes just enough. Not too much and not too little. It's the other 8 RP'ers we need to worry about.
  12. I think the pitch to Ohtani was a bit too much over the plate, but your point is well-taken. I also don't like him being forced to get more than 3 outs, but the rest of our pen is too scary to trust, so you gotta do what you gotta do, sometimes.
  13. It's 3 players. We just don't know who they are. Kinda like not knowing who some of our prospects we have are, right now.
  14. I don't think anyone is arguing he deserves a longer look than he has gotten. Some may feel he never deserves another look, no matter how well he does when sent down. One can argue he got too long a look, but with AAA not playing in April, we didn't really have anyone ready to step right in and play until about now. Not having an extra bench player forced more playing time than he might have had otherwise. It's like people say, "How can Cora play Cordero, when he's 1 for 22?" Well, he has to first go 1 for 22, before Cora knows that he did.
  15. I'm not defending Cordero's performance. He has sucked. It seemed a lot worse watching him come up, late in games, in key situations and strike out. Had we PH Chavis for him, it wouldn't seem as bad.
  16. Maybe we piggyback Sale & Whitlock.
  17. We did need 2 starts from Houck. I think one was a doubleheader and the other was at the start of the year, when ERod was given a late starting the season. We shouldn't need a 6th starter, unless someone gets hurt or a rainout forces a doubleheader, again.
  18. I see it this way, having a guy that can go 3-4 innings every 3-5 days gives the whole pen a day off, and since all of our starters hardly ever go 7 innings, we don't have to postpone using him every 4 days or so, because someone went 8 innings. Having a guy ready to start and give us maybe 4-5 innings in a start is a big plus. We've gone 7 weeks without anyone missing a start. That could be considered very lucky. We very likely will need at least a spot start here or there, soon- maybe more. If Whitlock comes in the game in the 5th or 6th, preferably starting an inning, he can finish the game, thereby getting some high leverage innings along the way and saving Barnes from pitching back to back.
  19. Agreed. Everyone says tied for 3rd, but really it's both.
  20. You never said what you said, today, about Montgomery. You have not always said only good things, but just days ago you were praising him.
  21. It's actually 3rd and 4th, but we always say the higher of the two. If I asked, who is in 4th place, the answer would not be the O's. Let's see how real our starters are when they face this mighty Jays lineup.
  22. Kike homered twice, yesterday at AAA. Lopez homered, again! Duran went 1 for 3 with a walk and a double. After starting the year 0 for 11, Duran is now 13 for 35 in his last nine games with 25 total bases in that stretch. Marcus Wilson continues doing well by going 2 for 4 with 2 doubles.
  23. The Yanks are now tied for 4th place in the ALE with the Rays. The Jays are in second, so the easiest way to put some distance between us and them is by beating them, at least 2 out of 3.
  24. That is for sure, but I think the question is has Cordero's leash been too long based on his skill set and scattered sample sizes of okay numbers? I'd argue it was just about right, and had we had players ready to play, maybe he'd have been sent down to AAA to work out his issues a week or 2 ago. IMO, he deserved a pretty long look. Not having an extra sub on the bench to PH or replace him late in games hurt his image.
  25. I never said you called him an ace, but it was just days ago you were praising him up and down and finding criteria that made him look much better than our starters.
