I am 99.9% certain the strike-ball call will be whispered in the ear of the ump in a split second. What makes you think it won’t? It will be seamless and unnoticeable. There is no hint of antiseptic, except it might clean up the swearing by Drunk fans not screaming at umps as much.

He didn't play for the Sox, and that was all I was talking about. JBJ is better than Kike, if you factor in longevity.

I agree. I never called JBJ even the best in MLB in any given season, but he was close, some years. I do think he was a tiny bit better than Lynn, but no arguments from any that think differently.

I was actually just listening to the remastered "Uncle John's Band" earlier, today.

I read the part about Kike taking bad routes to the ball, but he has the quickest first step I have seen. (No, I can't prove it.) It's a close call. I was JBJ's biggest fan for many years, and I loved Lynn, too. Maybe the fact that we have not had really great defense in CF since JBJ's early and middle career is blinding me. It's just my opinion, and I respect anyone who thinks JBJ or Lynn were better. They both had larger sample sizes, for sure.

I didn't mean to slight any of the guys you mentioned, but from what I saw with Kike, I think he was the best- short sample and all. Rick Miller was pretty good, too.

It's impossible to prove any game was lost by a bad strike/ball call, but if you really think it never has, then so be it. It's not some puritanical pursuit for perfection that drives the debate for robo umps calling ball & strikes. It's about making the game more about the players than the umps. You do know teams hold strategy meetings based on who is umping tonight's game, right? How absurd is that? Oh, and yes fans go and watch the umps, but they don't go to watch the umps.
