  1. I’d stack Workman, Barnes, Beeks, Weiland and Wilson up against any other team’s top pitching prospects over the last 14 years!
  2. We could not pay Vazquez’s or trade him, but the $28M you quote is very close to what we had and spent last winter. This assumes we won’t go over the tax line for the third straight season- something we have done before under Henry. The big difference is this: last year we spent all that money on 8 players, and this winter, about the same money will likely be spent on 4-5 players. That should produce more quality but it’s not quarantined. Some of Bloom’s largest contracts were not his best signings. Here’s a look back at last year’s signings and additions: $Millions 10 Richards 8 Ottavino 7 Kike x 2 6 Perez 3.5 Andriese 3 Marwin 1.8 Santana 1.2 Sawamura -2.8 Beni
  3. My problem with your idea is not about adding speed or not, it's about spending precious resources at 3B rather than a higher need area. If we can get a speedster leadoff hitter that plays 2B or OF, then I'll be more on board. My position is and almost always is we need to add pitching, pitching, pitching. Quality over quantity. To me, we only need to bring back Iggy, and I'll be okay with the everyday players. I'd like to see our defense improve, but it might be too complicated to do it, this winter.
  4. Does anyone think we can trade Vaz and his $7M option for something/anything of value? If not, and we want to trade for Contreras, we should not give Vaz the option.
  5. We could have run faster on our grand slams, too.
  6. Exactly, but sometimes, the answer might be yes, we are better off paying $30M than losing this player, and it is hard to replace his value with $30M spent on others. I think Betts was close to that. Devers might be, if not for his defense.
  7. Our fastest player is not Vaz. We won one year with a PR that was fast. I'd like to see some speed in our OF that also improves our defense. I do think speed is a priority- just not close to #1. We also won all our 4 rings by having 2 very good SP'ers. We don't have that now. One can argue Eovaldi is not as good as any of our previous champion aces and maybe even not better than those winning team's #2.
  8. We have about $40M to spend and stay even with last year. Price comes off the books, next year, along with Eovaldi, JD and others. There are numerous ways we can keep him, but to me, we should not at $30M/ yr.
  9. Obviously, if I think it's fair, I'll be okay with him signing elsewhere. I think we all agreed the lowball offer to Lester was insulting, especially when we did not come back quickly with a better offer. Why the need to turn every point into some epic personal battle. If some fans think we low-balled Bogey and they stop being fans, but most think we offered a fair value, to me, that's good enough. If it's not okay with you, then maybe you and others can go root for another team.
  10. Speed seems to be less and less important, but I do think it would be nice to add some, but I think we have way more important needs, and trading for Ramirez would cost us several top young prospects.
  11. I'd love to have him, but 3B? Actually, on 7/31, we had a huge hole at 1B, and playing Kike at 2B looked like it might be needed- opening up an OF slot.
  12. Do you really think 3B is our most pressing need, or is Jose "Santana" Ramirez your son?
  13. The mea culpas by others were telling.
  14. My guess is we make him an offer to extend. If he turns it down, we'll have to decide to trade him or offer him a QO. If he becomes a FA and we offer him fair market value, but someone else overpays, fine with me.
  15. I haven't heard any. We know Bogey will want a big payday and likely will not go for any home discount. If we fail to overpay him, and some fans get upset, so be it. Just keep winning, Bloom, and I'll support anything you do.
  16. Even if we lose one of these guys, we may end up getting them back. It might also mean we end up keeping a guy like Rosario or Winckowski who go on to do better.
  17. Oh, it's only homegrown players fans get upset about letting go? I think this debate is going off track. My point is, if we keep putting winning and or exciting teams on the field or teams that win it all every 4-6 years, I think fans will forgive GMs that let stars get away. Again, I'm not sure why we are reading so much into letting Betts go and that being our new norm. Part of the reason we let Betts go was because we went large and long on Sale and Bogey. It's not like we are going cheap, despite what a few posters think.
  18. We already have three 3Bmen: Devers, Dalbec & Bogey.
  19. That has nothing to do with us letting Lowe, Damon, Ellsbury and Lester go. As for Betts, we've already had an exciting season since letting him go, but if 5 years from now, some fans stop supporting us over letting Betts and maybe others go, then you'll have a point.
  20. Some fans were upset we let him go, and we got over losing him and won again.
  21. Some fans were upset we let him go, and we got over losing him and won again.
  22. Some were pissed we let Lackey go before his contract was up or that we did not extend him, despite not being "early in his career." We got over Lester, though, didn't we? We won on the Ellsbury non-move..
  23. Damon and Lowe, too. Some were pissed we let lackey go before his contract was up or that we did not extend him.
