  1. 2+1=1=1 = 5 I read fine
  2. Yes, finally you focused on the 4 years. I disagree on him being mostly bad. Having a 105 ERA+ over 4 years and eating those innings can never be bad.
  3. They are what you say they are, not me. Bloom's Sox did better than those he inherited, so he did an okay job trying to improve on 2021. Apparently, he was supposed to be Nostradamus and trade away everyone but Houck and Vaz. That was the ticket to success in 2022. Blame Bloom for not seeing what was so clear, right?
  4. So much of RP'ing and even closing is a near total crapshoot. The Sox went into 2018 totally prepared at closer. For much of 2018, there was no hint we needed help. Then, the wheels come off, but somehow Kimbrel bailed out the cesspool he filled to the brim with his bare hands. DD was a genius. Remember the talk on this board about leaving Kelly off the playoff roster. Yeah, we know better than Cora & the GM, right! Then, you take 2013, where we ended up using our 3rd string RP'er as closer after failures and injuries to Bailey and Hanrahan- two guys Ben traded for to "shore up" the closer's job, yeah right!, but we end up with the best 2-3 year closer stretch any team has ever seen. You plan and it works, then doesn't work, and then, somehow, we came out smelling like roses both times. Good job, GM, we say. LMAO!
  5. Yup. Why not talk about all the pluses Bloom added?
  6. OK, you kept listing the 5th year, 105 ERA+ gives perspective. Nate's is under 94. Did he suck?
  7. My point was, you are counting a season before the contract for Porcello.
  8. I agree. He has too much grit and determination to be held back.
  9. Story was an OBP and HR guy, plus a GG caliber fielder.
  10. Under the 4 year deal: 1 Great 1 Good 1 OKay 1 Bad
  11. So, Sale's deal was a great one due to what he did before the contract?
  12. 4 Year Deals: ERA+ / IP 105/792 Porcello 108/398 Nate 94/701 Lackey
  13. $82M for 1 game, wow! Porcello won the Cy Young and led us to a first place finish, that year. He also pitched very well in that epic game 3 of the '18 WS, going 4.2 allowing just 1 run (3H + 1BB)- the game we lost in extra innings. Also, in the ALDS, after pitching very well in relief in game 1's win, he won game 4 going 5 IP allowing 1 run (4H + 0BB). It's not like he wilted in the clutch.
  14. He also singled out Porcello on a list that included Lackey & Nate who had similar or worse numbers than Porcello.
  15. I agree, he failed to meet expectations, overall. He did not earn $20M/yr. But, I would not say HE was bad.
  16. It amazes me that no manager has taught all the "shift batters" to bunt and demand they do it.
  17. Do they have a WAR per PA stat?
  18. That is much better than JBJ, Dalbec, Cordro and even JD... But, not worth the money, so far. I'd still rather have Story.
  19. I can understand saying $20M for average is bad, so if the wording was "The contract was below average or bad," I'd be okay with that position, but Porcello was not bad from 2017-2020. He was average or placed in the 31st to 60yh range in a lot of major categories, which makes him similar to most team's #2 SP'er. In other categories, he was a number 3. He would have been almost every team's best 3rd or 4th starter, so calling him a #5 is not fair. Then, being 10th in IP'd is a very helpful thing. He saved the pen, which were sketchy, then, too. He kept us from needing to start our 7th, 8th or 9th starters. A look at our #6,7,8+ SP'ers: 2017: 4.88 Fister 4.33 Johnson 8.25 Wright 2.92 Velazquez 12.96 K Kendrick 2018: 4.17 Johnson 6.08 Pom Pom 3.18 Velazquez 2.68 Wright 2019: 5.43 Velazquez 6.02 Johnson 6.20 Cashner 7.36 Chacin 5.09 Weber 5.81 Josh Smith 2020: 8.16 Godley 4.80 Mazza 4.40 Weber 5.61 Brewer 15.55 Hart 7.71 Kickham
  20. It's an all or nothing league, now.
  21. I think he is now 3rd or 4th in HRs since 2018 or 2019. Had we been able to trade JD, even by including $5-7M or a prospects, signing Schwarber would have been a no-brainer. For those complaining about our 2022 1B defense, I do recall a lot of that about Schwarber's 1B D. If he wasn't going to play 1B, LF was already jammed full with Dugo and Duran to start the year. I guess we could have gone with Schwarber in LF, Kike in CF and Dugo in RF, and when Kike got hurt, JBJ in CF, but we didn't get JBJ to be the 4th OF'er- like it or not.
  22. Nice post, Max. Lots of truth, there.
  23. The idea is that JD might get up to bat again, later in the game, and you want to keep your bench ready and stocked for more important situations that may arise, later. It's a trade off. This situation was certainly a "close call," but I do think most managers would not have PR, there. However, as badly as JD is hitting, that should factor in, too. I don't think Cora's call rises to the level of harsh criticism- not that anyone is saying it was unforgivable.
  24. His SIERA places him 70th out of 150. That's not bad or horrible: it's Okay.
  25. No adjustment for pitching in Fenway or vs some of the best offenses in the league?
