  1. Nobody liked that lowball offer. Nobody.
  2. I really hope we can call you out on this, later. It is a real gamble, no doubt. I share your concern about him not really being ML tested or proven. There are dozens of examples of players from that league do poorly and dozens that do well. I will say, look at the list of the highest paid MLB FA signings over the years: what is the success rate on them vs Japanese players? It might be very close.
  3. When you look at what some of these top line FAs are getting, the Yoshida and Jansen signings are looking better and better. Yes, Diaz is better than Jansen, but WOW on the money differential. We got a solid and consistent closer, yet some (not Red) are complaining. Yes, Bogey and others are more solid signings than Yoshida but what a massive pay difference. The fact is, we still have at least 2 slots to fill and about $40M left to spend. Had we gone for Bogey or Diaz, we'd have very little left to spend on key areas of need. The winter report card is still very incomplete, but I'm fine with what we ave done, so far.
  4. The thing is Ort and DHern have nasty stuff- likely better than Ward, so maybe they value upside more than the floor. Brasier, Ort and DHern may be gone, anyway, once we add the FAs we just signed and maybe 1-3 more.
  5. Maybe not great or even plus might be Swanson or Andrus. Brantley at DH is a lefty, too. Either or... Senga & Andrus Nate & Swanson (lose a comp pick for Swanson and not get one for Nate signing elsewhere- a net 2 comp pick loss) Trading Dugo for a RH'd RF'er might be tried. Gallo & Conforto both bat LH'd.
  6. So, about $40M left to spend: 1) Start the Devers extension, this year to lessen the AAV going forward and then sign Andrus and Nate/Kluber? 2) Go for Senga and Andrus (maybe squeeze in Conforto/Gallo)? 3) Go Nate, Andrus, Conforto or Gallo? 4) Go over the tax line?
  7. That's fair. I just thought, all along, the Sox wanted a SS known for defense, too. Just my opinion. It's, now more than ever, Devers Forevers time!
  8. I'm not sure anyone thought the market would have exploded like this, but I guess that is part of a GM's job to project value vs the future market. Some GMs locked up key players over the last few years, like the M's & Castillo extension. Did those GMs just get lucky with timing, or where they seeing a massive market uptick coming up and jumped the gun? If Bloom ruly could have gotten Bogey for $200M/8 a year ago, it's fair to be critical of him, if you think Bogey is worth that, now.
  9. So, we may have outbid the Yanks.
  10. Cots has $189.6M, so we are under by about $40-43M. Highest needs: SS SP Would be nice... P RF or Dugo/ DH or Dugo C We could spend it all on Correa (ain't happening.) We could mix and match: SS $24-26M Swanson $9-12M Andrus Or, use Story or Kike at SS and find a CF'er or 2Bman (Arroyo/EValdez?) SP $20-24M Senga $14-17M Nate $11-14M Kluber Keep $3-6M for the deadline?
  11. $280/11 Who, here, would have done that? I was thinking that $225/8 was a bit too high. While the extra $55M/3 does not seem too bad, those last 3 years will be at an advanced age and certainly not as a SS. I can't imagine him staying at SS more than maybe 3 years, especially since the Padres have about 5 SSs- some are better defenders at SS. I'm at least glad he went to the NL, but I hate seeing him go. Lots of great memories. I hope Devers doesn't make this a tri-defecta.
  12. Yes, league leading 54 games finished and 41 saves. 85% save rate. .612 OPS Against (.511 in September- his highest IP month) .573 RISP .615 RISP w 2 outs .619 High Leverage .668 Late & Close Career: .462 v Yanks .451 TBR .749 TOR .262 BOS .495 in Fenway
  13. I wish all our pitchers were chokes like Jansen. Playoff Numbers (65.1 IP- about a season for a Closer) 0.796 WHIP 2.20 ERA Last 2 years in playoffs, including with ATL: 9 IP 4 H 1 ER (1.00 ERA) 1 BB 16 K 0.556 WHIP Not much to laugh at.
  14. Yes, at Dodger fans and you.
  15. Seems like a no-brainer. Ward > Ort, Ward > Brasier and Ward > DHern. It may very well turn out to be of no or little consequence, but still...
  16. Was that the same day? I was thinking maybe JD or Price signing day. Maybe the Sale trade day? Weren't Pablito and HRam signed on the same day?
  17. I'm not sure. The timing was weird. Big "heavy" meeting with Bogey, then they sign Yoshida. Maybe they sign both, but where is our SP'er? Could I have been right about getting a SP via trade?
  18. I think the talk was $80M after Martin signed.
  19. Quick, name the last off season day as exciting as this for the Sox...
  20. Signing so fast, I can't keep up. 2. Correa 4. Bogey 5. Swanson 6. Rodon 9. Nimmo 11. Senga 13. Bassitt 15. Benintendi 17. Manaea 21. Syndergaard 23. Eovaldi 24. T Rogers 25. JD Martinez 26. 22. Kinda like Dwight Evans: 162 gm avg 20-30 .269 22 74 (.826 OPS/ 123 OPS+) 31-38 .275 25 92 (.859 OPS/ 132 OPS+) Better yet, 32-37: .283 27 102 (.886/ 139 OPS+)
  23. We will almost certainly be adding a SS, and might still be looking to add a real RF'er. (Trade Dugo or DH him?) I think we add a SP, too. Assuming no more additions: 1. Yoshida LF 2. Devers 3B 3. Story SS 4. Dugo RF 5. Kike CF 6. Casas 1B 7. Arroyo/ E Valdez 2B 8. Hosmer/Dalbec DH 9. McGuire/Wong C SP: Sale, Whitlock, Bello, Paxton, Pivetta (Crawford, Winckowski, Mata) RP: Jansen, Martin, Houck, Schreiber, Barnes, Joely, Crawford, Winckowski, Brasier/Taylor (Mata, Kelly, German, Walter, Murphy)
  24. I think we are done adding pen arms. FYI Career Pen Splits OPS Against ® Jansen .502 v R/.587 v L ® Martin .704 v R/ .664 v L ® Houck .528 v R/ .676 v L ® Barnes .691 v R/.696 v L ® Schreiber .625 v R/.748 v L (but .676 in 2022) (L) Joely Rod. .732 v R/ .691 v L (L) Taylor .801 v R/ .478 v L
  25. And, he has to remain on the active 26 man roster all season long- something the Nats can afford to do. We were never going to add Song to our 40, this year, but I wish we had added Ward and Politi.
