  1. The lower AAV matters, but we can't say Breggie is making $30M a year.
  2. Indeed, that was one goal, but so was adding a big bat. Contreras helped with the corner IF defense, and they probably thinks he has enough power to at least make up for the Breggie loss, but who makes up for losing Devers? I'd rather have Bregman than Suarez. Alonso and Suarez would be about the same AAV as Contreras and Bregman, but the D would be way worse, granted.
  3. I mentioned them and the no trade clause, earlier. I'd have given deferrals to Alonso, too, if needed.
  4. I can't see the Sox basing any model on the surety that they will outbid everybody for anybody.
  5. I'm talking about what just about every GM says, when they do not sign someone they pursued. I think the anger over no signings is spilling over into areas where maybe it doesn't matter much, to me.
  6. They had to know they might miss out on Breggie. Mt worry now is what is their next plan?
  7. I agree he deserves more, and my suggested top offer reflected that. I feel our need for power is overwhelming. Offering $5M more to Alonso is $160M/5. I said I was fine with our $165M/6 for Bregman and would not have been upset if we matched the $175M/5 deal he took. I never said Alonso deserves more money than Breggie.
  8. I mentioned the defense, so how is that "ignoring" it?
  9. No doubt. He seemed pretty standard on this one, to me.
  10. "Another winter of not signing top talent?" Last winter we signed Bregman (highest AAV in team history) Buehler (highest FA Pitcher AAV since Price) and Chapman (who many of us felt was not enough.)
  11. That's one way to look at it. I thought Alonso fit our power need, and while there are many ways to build a WS team, the last 4 Sox ring teams had 2 power bats. This one has none, and Breggie added would still have left us with none. It's a close call, but to me Alonso's offense has been more consistent, and he's a little younger. OPS+ last 5 yrs: 134 Alonso (133>146>123>122>144) 123 Bregman (113>134>122>116>128) The defense part goes heavily to Breggie, and it's harder to add a good 3Bman than a 1Bman, as the Contreras trade showed. We have Contreras, now, anyway, so it matters little. I'm not upset about Alonso, either, because of Contreras. If we lose out on Suarez or trading for a #2, I'll look back at Polanco as the one we could have done something about- maybe Suarez, too.
  12. Doesn't every GM say something similar after not submitting the winning bid? No matter what he says or does he's wrong.
  13. They could give us their second Abreu ($5.9M.) Add Hicks for Javier and they save $2M this year and next.
  14. He's under contract. If they get him for anything more than free (or for Masa + Hicks), I'll be joining you and Fred on the ledge.
  15. He also has an .891 OPS at Yankee Stadium. To those who believe clutch is a repeatable skill: .866 High Leverage .809 Medium .745 Low Leverage He hits lefties well (.824,) but he's no slouch vs RHPs (.781.) HRs per 650 PAs: 34 v R 35 v L
  16. I'm not thrilled with the Ks and the horrific defense, but the guy hits bombs and usually has an OPS over .780. It might take 3 years to get him, or some sort of 2 year deal with a big buyout for year 3. $24M + $24M with $21M team option for year 3 with 6M buyout. That makes it $23M x 3 or $27M x 2: team choice. If that isn't enough, I don't see adding more money in the same light as for Bregman, as it's "just" 2 more year- not 5. I see us with a 5 year window or more.
  17. I fully understand that, and I think $150M/5 was highly irrational. $165M was irrational enough. More was absurd. I've said I'd have offered Alonso $5M more, so it's not about unwillingness to overpay. It's about a certain level of irrationality and who you choose to do it for. I was also for signing Polanco for more than what was offered. That one could have back-fired. I'm hoping we overpay for Suarez, but it's not going to be by $30M more than he deserves AND 1 to 2 years too long.
  18. So, we replace DHam with a free Arenado. Okay.
  19. The problem is Mayer can't play 3B and 2B and Anthony can't play either one. 1st Priority: Big Bat 2nd: 3B (maybe 2B) 3rd: #2 SP 4th: RP (LH'd?) maybe 5th is Catcher. Knowing this FO, we'll be lucky to add two from my top 4 list, so I'm not seeing why we reach for our 5th or 6th priority.
  20. This might surprise some people: Sox leading OPS guys vs RHPs: (Returning Players Only) .903 Anthony .852 Duran .808 Abreu .743 Story .739 Mayer .732 Yoshida .723 Narvaez .720 Rafaela (career reverse splits, too) .718 Romy (reverse splits) Not too bad. .658 Campbell .618 DHam .503 Wong
  21. It's thin in the minors, yes, and we did add a few catchers down in the low minors. We have 4 in the top 33 and 5 in the top 45, but Jo Garcia tops the list at #26. I'm fine with Narvaez, Wong and emergency catcher Contreras. AAA Catcher, Jason Delay, can be added the 40 if we need a fill-in. We have bigger needs, like 3B, SP and RP than Catcher depth, IMO.
  22. Sonny Gray >>> Gallen Best fWAR seasons since 2023: 5.4 Gray '23 5.2 Gallen '23 4.4 Valdez '23 4.0 Valdez '25 3.8 Gray '24 3.7 Valdez '24 3.6 Gray '25 2.8 Gallen '24 1.1 Gallen '25 I'm not sure why people think the 30.5 year old Gallen is going to age well. Now, Valdez> Gray, but he's had "issues" with the Astros and he might be the anti-Breg type guy for the clubhouse. I'd rather have Ranger or trade for a Lodolo type.
  23. I'm not worried about Narvaez and opening day. We do have Contreras, who was reportedly going to play some catcher in 2026 for STL in 2026. He should not be the FT C, for sure.
