  1. Nobody is saying let's trade Dugo for JBJ.
  2. Max, give it up. Everyone agrees hitting and pitching matter way more than fielding. There are 162 games, and most of us agree our D cost us 5-10 games. The rest are on the O and Pitching. Another thing, BR's dWAR is not the measurement most stat guys use. DRS and OAA are where it's at. OAA has our 1B, 2B, SS and 3B positions dead last or very near it. Ou D sucks and it costs us enough games to make a difference.' 'The years and players you keep listing from the past did not.
  3. Some are already in the bigs: Whitlock Wong Winckowski Abreu Kelly EValdez DHam That's more than should be expected after less than 4 years and a lost season of development in 2020. Yes, some of the HS picks are not above AA, but they have some doozies, by almost all accounts from A- to AA. Our #1 is at AA (Mayer) and should be AAA in 2024. #2 Anthony is at AA, now. #3 Bleis got hurt and is at A- #5 Teel is in AA after just being drafted. #9 Zanetello is in A- (just drafted) #10 Romero A- #11 Drohan AAA 3 of his top 4 prospects are at AA and 4 of 7 are at AA and AAA. Others: 16. Meidroth AA 18. Hickey AA 19. Jordan AA There is sooooo much to be critical of Bloom over. I just don't get why people feel the need to Swift Boat him.
  4. Mostly on bats, though.
  5. .914 since April 20th. .937 since May 3rd. 1.002 since June 3rd.
  6. What scares me, some is that we heard Dalbec should be a good defensive 1Bman, too, and he seemed to get worse, over time. There is no reason to assume Casas can't get better, and I think he can and will, but he was pretty bad, this year. I think moving Yoshida to DH makes more sense and costs less than signing Chapman. If Casas and Devers continue sucking at the corners, we can think of moving them the next season.
  7. Garrett & Scott for Duran, Perales, Romero, E R-C
  8. I totally agree. I've never seen a team where you could say having an average D would give you 4-5 more wins, minimum, so this is unchartered territory for us Sox fans. Usually, it's almost always about pitching, then offense, but part of the reason our pitching looks so bad, is that they've needed to get 4 or 5 outs in way too many innings. Forget errors, It's all the non error blunders that cost us many runs and 5+ games. BTW, we are 4.5 behind TEX. Sure, better pitching or hitting could have made up those 5 games, but with the D, we are just making the point that average D wins us 5 more, Therein lies the rub for most fans.
  9. Who is the best lefty RP'er?
  10. I'm going to start calling this "Red's Standings Update." Here we go... TOR pulled one out in 10, today, but TEX lost. 83-55 TBR 77-60 SEA (T-ALW leader) 78-61 HOU (t-ALW leader) 76-61 TEX (WC3) 76-62 TOR -0.5 72-66 BOS -4.5 from TEX & HOU (-4.0 from TOR) 68-69 NYY -8.0 Take care of business vs the Rays, and HOU or TEX will lose vs each other. Then, we need to sweep TOR and probably TEX. It's a longshot, I know, but this team has been full of up and down surprises, all year long. No need for that to stop, suddenly, now. Someone is watching the Yankee lead more than the WC race.
  11. Has a good defense ever saved a mediocre staff in the history of MLB? (See the Royals last championship.) Has a good D ever put a good staff over the top to win a ring? How much did Beni's catch have to do with that win? Max, nobody is saying defense is more important than O or pitching- nobody. There only seems to be one guy saying one aspect of the game does not matter, at all.
  12. We do need a lefty. Too bad all the guys I want to be in the pen to start the year, Whitlock, Crawford, Pivetta and Houck are all righties. I doubt they feel all set with lefties Joely and Bernardino (Murphy & Walter.)
  13. As much as I dislike the idea, they probably view 3 slots going to Sale, Houck, Crawford and Pivetta. We might get lucky and see them add 2 solid SP'er and make those 4 fight for 2 slots, with the other going to the pen or on the IL. (Whitlock stays in the pen, forever.)
  14. If we trade Dugo, we will add another OF'er- most likely a RH'd bat like Duvall.
  15. Imagine having 2 new pitchers at 190 or 200+ IP Bello at 175+ and Pivetta and Houck at 150+
  16. Does that mean three pitchers at $10M/1 and Duvall at $28M/3?/B]
  17. That's what scares me. They lie more than truth.
  18. Most games played vs ND: 91 Navy 89 USC 85 Purdue 77 Mich St 71 Pitt 51 Army 49 Northwestern (hardly any after 1976) 43 Michigan (every year from '78-'14) 36 GA Tech (almost all from long ago) 33 Stanford (every year since '97)
  19. ND seemed to resist playing too many teams seen as skimping on academics. Sure, they added Miami and have played USC for a long time, but they seem to favor the Stanfords over the Alabamas, Oklahomas and Ohio States. They did play Big 10 teams, a lot, but mostly Michigan, MSU and Purdue and not Ohio St, Indiana or Illinois, which seemed like nice regional rivalry opportunities. We also joined up with the ACC, which is known for higher academic criteria than most other conferences. The Army, Navy and for a while the Air Force made sense, due to the independent status of these teams. Just a theory on my behalf.
  20. Many teams would. The Marlins might also want Duran or Dugo, but they won't bring back the same return. I could see us trade Duran and E R-C for Garrett. We'd then keep Dugo and re-sign Duvall. vs RHPs: LF: Yoshida (DH?)/Duvall CF: Duvall/Abreu RF: Dugo vs LHPs LF: Refsnyder CF: Rafaela RF: Duvall
  21. It's hard to know about a person's managerial skills. I'd think he might make a great pitching coach.
  22. OBP .372 Refsnyder .367 Casas .355 Turner .350 Yoshida .346 Duran .342 Devers .341 Dugo .337 Duvall .302 Wong Under 200 PAs .429 Abreu 21 .375 Rafaela 8 .353 Urias .340 Reyes .327 McGuire SLG .590 Duvall .508 Devers .495 Casas .482 Duran .482 Turner .481 Yoshida .462 Dugo .408 Wong .611 Abreu .500 Rafaela .408 Reyes .384 McGuire OPS 8+ PAs 1.040 Abreu .927 Duvall .875 Rafaela .862 Casas .850 Devers .836 Turner .828 Duran .813 Yoshida .790 Dugo .748 Reyes .711 McGuire .710 Urias .708 Wong .690 Refsnyder .677 EValdez vs RHPs .943 Duvall .875 Casas .859 Devers .852 Dugo .841 Duran .823 Yoshida .791 Turner .762 Wong .701 Reyes .695 Urias .671 McGuire .470 Refsnyder vs LHPs 1.105 McGuire .964 Turner .878 Duvall .870 Reyes .850 Refsnyder .830 Devers .803 Casas .779 Yoshida .733 Urias .623 Dugo .551 Wong vs LHPs
  23. My idea of Duran and Ref sharing LF is not about great gloves in LF, either, but it is an important. I also think maybe Yoshida's bat suffered from getting tired, so playing him more at DH might make him an even better hitter. I do not think LF D, especially in Fenway is as important as SS, C, 2B, CF and then RF and 3B. I'm okay with neglecting D in LF. Nobody sees Devers or Casas as net negatives, but that doesn't mean looking at ways to improve our D without losing their O should not be dismissed, out of hand. I'm fine with letting Devers and Casas have another year at 3B and 1B. I'm not for taking any spending from pitching to sign Chapman. I think our D will improve enough without making signing a player based on defense a major priority. That is not to say I would say let's ignore D, if we sign another OF'er. To me, improving our rotation needs to take up 90%+ of our resources spent, this winter- either with money spent or who we might trade for.
