  8. The use of “clutch” to mean “a high-pressure situation or critical moment” was definitely popularized in sports, particularly baseball, where the term was in use by the 1920s. A poster to the mailing list of the American Dialect Society a few years ago suggested that the usage may have been drawn from the famous poem “Invictus” by the English poet W.E. Henley, which contains the line “In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud” (“fell” meaning “cruel or fierce,” as in “one fell swoop”). Inasmuch as “Invictus” (Latin for “unconquered”) was part of the standard English curriculum in many schools of the period, it’s certainly possible that the word simply popped into the mind of a sportswriter and grew from there. But it’s equally likely that “in the clutch” meaning in the “moment of crisis” arose as a variant of “in the pinch,” also meaning “at a critical juncture,” which had been used in baseball since the first years of the 20th century. This “pinch” also gave us “pinch hitter,” a substitute batter who steps in when the team is in an especially tight spot.

  13. do you think David Ortiz is clutch?
  14. i would rather the yankees lose and take my chances with whomever remains. i dont want the yankees help in "getting by cleveland". i'll take my chances in a best of 7 vs them. any Red Sox fan that is rooting for the Yankees tonight because they believe it will help us in the ALCS can eat a bag of dicks.
  15. i 100 billion million hope/wish/root for the yankees to lose tonight. i dont give a flying f*** if them winning increases my Red Sox chances to win ALCS by 1.7%. I will gladly forego that 1.7% for a yankees 1 and done.....

  21. This is always my favorite thread to start. It means our beloved Boston Red Sox have made the Postseason. It takes 11 wins to have the Parade. I say gas up the duckboats- we ARE gonna do this! Who's with me? Who makes the ALDS roster? I say holt, rajai, nunez. ALDS game 1 is Thursday. Certainly Sale will be the starter. Game 2 on Friday will 99% be Pom. The question will be who will be on the bump on Sunday? I think Porcello. But the way the ball is coming out of Price's hand right now...I think the hook will be quick. Here's hoping we have a better showing this year than last. Let's enjoy the AL East title for a few days and cheer on the twinkies. I'm pumped for some postseason baseball. Easily the best time of year. GO SOX
