  1. Right you are. Against really good pitchers like Severino and Scherzer, the best offense is a good defense. Price failed miserably at Yankee Stadium, and Porcello was tough last night at Nationals Park, plus he got that astounding double with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 2d inning.
  2. A prophet in this modern day and age.
  3. Good stuff. Thanks. Some surprises.
  4. Stole is the right word. Today I’m just fine with that and the 1 GAME lead and the best record in MLB. Well done, Porcello. And Betts.
  5. A win, but not exactly encouraging. Lineup stunk again, and for good measure so did the bullpen. Barnes tried to give up a run, Kelly wanted very much to give up the second dinger--before Cora took him out--and Kimbrel needed like a thousand pitches to get a four out save, maybe to signal Cora he still doesn't like doing windows. He pitches the 9th, and he usually does that pretty well, and he does not care to do anything else. Porcello did go 6 and give up just 2 and absolutely got the hit of the game.
  6. About right. Except Wright, of course. That knuckler is mostly unhittable.
  7. Nothing wrong with that. Pom should never be allowed back unless and until he develops a good changeup, which he apparently is determined not to do. He loves his big old knuckle curve and his s***** fastball, and that's about it. On top of that he takes forever between pitches and gives every sign he is terrified of making the next pitch.
  8. Good point about time between pitches. Yes, they need to be like Sale.
  9. The 2d inning was just incredibly lucky--both the double by Porcello and loading the bases. Since then the lineup has done OK building Sherzer's pitch count, but have been horrible getting hits. The hero of this game beyond question is Porcello even though he has made some mistakes. And it helps that the Nats ain't hitting much. If Porcello can get thru the 5th unscathed, Cora needs to have that bullpen ready. I think Porcello can go 6 or 7, but can ain't will.
  10. Meh. Since he went on the DL, there has been zero encouraging news from the FO or manager.
  11. I forgot: not the Yankees line up tonight. Hope.
  12. Porcello, righty vs. Sherzer, righty I'm doing this because I've lived here off and on since 1946, but I'm not going to the game tonight. Too darn hot. Summer has finally hit DC. The Nationals stink lately, almost reminiscent of the old Senators (Washington, first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League) which Teddy Ballgame (Williams) once managed. But the Nats have a huge pitching edge tonight, much like last night's debacle. Let's see if our guys can bounce back despite not getting out of NYC until midnight or later.
  13. Kimmi, All due respect, but my guess is that Pedro worked with our pitchers too--only they didn't listen. That is in fact what I see in all our starters except Sale, who does work on his repertoire and his delivery. I see no evidence that Pom has ever attempted to develop a changeup, which is crucial for a lefty starter. I see nothing new about what Price does. Or ERod who, if anything, is getting worse in terms of delivery and command. Porcello is I think keeping the ball low better than last year. But not ERod or Price. Meanwhile, there is Severino with that blazing fastball who has worked on and become good at throwing breaking balls, sharp breaking ones. He listens.
  14. I believe Cherington cost us Lester, but you can bet the Lucchino and John Henry weighed in on that topic. So here is our $30M X 7 = $210M arm that is just stinking up the joint. I am unable to replay the 1st inning which I missed, but I'll bet he threw very few pitches low in the zone because he likes 'em up in the zone for hitters' convenience. Price now officially stinks. It is useful to have had ERod pitch game 1 and Sale game 2 to allow comparisons. Price is miles behind Sale, and, honestly, slightly behind ERod. One good thing is this is a work night and I will get to bed at a decent time. Severino and Price together are making sure of that.
  15. I always have the sound off and only occasionally read the close captions, which I usually keep on unless it interferes with game-watching. I like listening to games, but, if I'm watching, I normally dislike the BS all commentators deliver. I freely admit some are better than others. And sometimes they can say something to explain what happened on the field that is otherwise hard to figure out. But overall, I just like my own impressions, not because they are better, but because they are mine.

  17. This is the perfect thread for that comment, and I agree the A's and Rays can be a problem for us. Besides, the no-nothings mistakenly believe that 15 games back means you can't win period, and statistically that is just BS. Out of 15 AL teams only the Orioles, White Sox, and Royals win less that 40% of their games. 8 of 15 AL teams are playing at a .500 clip or better. So you point is a great reminder not to take teams other than the Yankees, Astros, and Mariners for granted.
  18. Tonight I think Severino has the edge over Price: his 4.5 WAR is double Price's 2.2. He split his two starts vs. the Sox, but he also has a better bullpen backing him up. That said, I still like the Sox chances because they hit Grey, a righty who pitches a little like Severino and not at all like Sabathia, last night, because they have generally hit righties well this year, and because two lefty bats, Devers and JBJ, seem to be coming around. And Price pitches a whole lot more like Sale than ERod. Cora can make three lineup changes tonight: Pearce for Moreland, Holt for Nunez, Vazquez for Price. I see him going with Vazquez, maybe with Holt, and not with Pearce. Vazquez has caught Price a lot. Holt and Moreland are lefty bats vs. righty Severino. Thus: Betts; Beni; JDM; Moreland; Bogie; Devers; Holt; Vazquez; JBJ But I won't be surprised if Nunez is back tonight playing 2B and batting 7th. Cora likes Nunez.
  19. You're another one I tend to disagree with, but not this time. Dead on. I like the coin flip metaphor especially because it underscores the simple arithmetic fact that right now the two most likely wild card teams are the Yankees, who are winning 66% of their games, and the Mariners who are winning 63% of theirs. That's miniscule. Throw in the Sox at 67% and the Astros at 65%, and all four teams are bunched closely together in terms of probability of winning a game.
  20. My sister was born in Texas and my parents and all five siblings and I have at different times and locations lived there. None of us still alive intend to go back. Basically, too hot. When I visit Houston, I see they have mastered the art and science of staying indoors in the summer (6 months of it) the same way Canadians have learned to do so in the winter. Nevertheless, it is beyond question a very important state: 2d most electoral votes; 2d largest in population and in size; 1st in emitting greenhouse gases; several big cities which all seem to be growing; but also lots of small towns and large ranches; by far the longest border with Mexico.
  21. JBJ actually caught one. Nice.
  22. I hope that hbp isn't because our ace ain't got it tonight.
  23. Goodness gracious, what the heck was that. Not just a grandslam. Not just by Devers batting 6th. What I love is it was to that short porch in LF which was intended to benefit Yankees hitters.
  24. Judge has a pretty darn good arm.
