    Honestly, I can't be sure. I'm just prejudiced in favor of any pitch that breaks down and to the left or right. it is clearly Pom's best pitch, but one hitters can get used to and therefore hit, which is one reason why his going 6 innings doesn't happen often.

    Season to date, Pom has the worst WAR on the Sox pitching staff, -.5. But it's not the numbers that bother me nearly as much as what I see--a lefty with no changeup, a slow fast ball, a pretty good knuckle curve, not very good control, a lousy move to cover 1B on grounders to the right, and, sometimes, an obvious reluctance to actually make the next pitch.

    I would probably do that if I didn't also believe Harper is going to want a huge amount of money.

    I would say "when" Pom falters and continue to be astounded by the many chances he keeps getting to start MLB games.

    I don't mind giving Sandy Leon some credit for Price last night and for his overall CERA. Last night was one of those games when we needed great Sox pitching and got it despite Price looking very hittable in the first two innings. If my count is right, Swihart caught three scoreless innings with Hembree, Kelly, and Velazquez on the mound. I'm not quite ready to ditch Vazquez even though Swihart is looking pretty good so far. I will add, however, that Vazquez got himself into this situation by stealing a base when it was not needed and when he lacked the skill to do it well (safely).

    Great, great win against a superb Phillies starter. Price really came thru--8 innings, 1 run. And the bullpen. And of course Swihart. Top 5 in the Sox lineup were hitless and scoreless. It happens. Well done, David Price. MVP78 on a roll.

    About right. I happen to think his in-game decisions are pretty good, but his overall team management clearly has been amazing. And for exactly the reason you state: the 162 game season is a grind; and a smart manager does what he kind to keep his players from being ground up.

    Back to the original question, the title of this thread. I would have bet anything that starting Swihart at 3B would be a big mistake. Wrong. Credit to both Swihart and Cora--and probably the coaching staff.

    It comes down to how bad do you want to win? I would argue that sending Moreland, whose July OPS is 300 points under JBJ's July OPS (.820 vs. .526), in to bat for JBJ was the wrong move, especially when the Sox pinch hitting all season long has been terrible (6 for 34). As it was, Rodney darn near walked JBJ.

    Kind of like Severino, I think, especially the "prone to the big inning and he sometimes doesn't show up at all." Or so it has seemed in July.

    Twins are actually in 2d place, 7 back of the Guardians. They are competitive. But I agree with your thought.

    So far this abysmally stupid manager has the best winning percentage in Sox history. We lost last night because no one was hitting: 5 hits, 1 double, 0 for 8 with RISP. And the bullpen gave up a couple of crucial runs.

    We--you--don't know jack about this team. At least, not compared to what Cora knows. As for Moreland hitting for JBJ: JBJ has hit better in July than Moreland; the Sox overall are 6 of 34 pinch hitting; we lost because the hitting overall last night was abysmal + the bullpen once again gave up a couple of key runs. It makes no sense--to me, anyway--to blame last night's loss on Cora.

    Gibson, righty vs. Johnson, lefty I'm giving the edge to Johnson because the sonofagun is a pitcher (vice thrower) and even though the Twins have won 3 straight on the road vs. Toronto. Sox might be a little tired because of the holdup in Baltimore which Cora has commented on. KC at Yankee Stadium tonight, Junis vs. Gray. Yankees and Royals both 5-5 in their last 10 games. It's a bitter pill for us fans to swallow, what with DD rashly picking up some guy named Eovaldi and dispensing with the estimable services of Pomeranz. Am I the only one to notice that Pom and Kimbrel both have those big knuckle curves and blazing fast balls?
