  1. Love the two runs--badly needed against the Rays and with Sale on the mound. Horrible, horrible at bat by Devers. And Renfroe's wasn't much better. First pitch single off Sale's well placed fastball. Could be a painful night because Sale stunk his last time and has not been good in the postseason. Oh, goody. A hanging slider, first pitch single for Franco. Two pitches by Sale and two men on base for the Rays.
  2. Guys, guys, guys. The stealing of home was irrelevant to the game outcome. It was a smart play because of the shift, etc, and it was embarrassing. To me blaming guys is pointless—even me blaming Vazquez. Dumbest thing Cora could do is make sure it doesn’t happen again because other things are more important.
  3. Preacher, meet choir. Sale has never been good in the postseason.
  4. Vin Scully, an east coast guy, born in Manhattan, educated at Fordham, and a Brooklyn announcer until he was dragged to LA.
  5. Well, then, just maybe you and mvp 78 are out of touch with the latest thinking about rosters. As am I. Bullpens are in, and extra catchers aren't.
  6. I'm not worried about 13 pitchers either. With two bye dates in a five game ALDS, 11 should be plenty. But Cash and Cora both want 13. Bullpens rule.
  7. I was just paraphrasing a drunk John Riggins talking to Sandra Day O'Connor. The internet and the water cooler are two different universes, particularly with regard to civility. In my last job I actually enjoyed talking to a Yankees fan because we both knew something about each other's teams, and we were in an office setting. The internet, on the other hand, can get very dark very quickly. But I'm stuck with it because I'm retired-retired. Plus I think there are a number of good posters on talksox.
  8. Me, I'm fine with Dugo, Kike, and Renfroe in the outfield, and Devers, Bogey, Iglesias, and Dalbec in the infield with Arroyo as a backup. If JDM and Schwarber both return, I'd be fine with the system Cora has used this year with one of them playing a position. I would be OK with Plawecki and Wong as the catchers, but am fine with whatever Bloom and Cora decide. I think pitching is the issue even though the Sox already have some pretty good arms (Sale, Eovaldi, Houck, Whitlock, Taylor, etc).
  9. True. I liked listening to Curt Gowdy calling Sox games.
  10. Every manager these days is descended from Captain Hook. Just ask Cash, and he'll tell you that letting a starter face the the opposing lineup a third time is fraught with peril. Cash and Cora both chose to have 13 pitchers for the ALDS despite the travel days after games 2 and 4. So both expect to "hook 'em, horns!" As for Sale, I'm hoping he can go 4 or 5 innings because five days ago against the Nats he only went 2.2.
  11. I like that, except that the guy I hold responsible is the catcher, Vazquez. Taylor was just coming of the IL and was thrust into a tough situation with runners on 2d and 3d, so he was focused on pitching--as he should have been. Vazquez was the guy who should have signaled him to check the guy on 3d. Or stood up or whatever--before Arozarena headed for home.
  12. Aaaaaamen!!! The entire west coast can go suck an egg in bucket. Baseball was invented on the east coast.
  13. About Devers. Yes, I worry about his weight, but right now he looks pretty good to me and moves well on defense and on the basepaths. His swing pisses me off now and then, but you cannot not love the results. He has got to get rid of that giant wad of tobacco, which I gather is intended to calm his nerves or whatever. I think Eovaldi is the team MVP, but will not quarrel with anyone who says Devers, errors and all.
  14. Toughen up, Sandy (Supreme Court Associate Justice) baby. I put no one on ignore. And I at least glance at the game thread, where I already have posted for today's game.
  15. What the nattering nabobs of negativism have completely ignored is the absolute importance of MLB adding a second wild card team to each league, thus necessitating a wild card game, which in turn was and is intended to give the Division winner, also the team with the best record in that League, a clear advantage in the Division Series. We won't see our best starter until game 3 of the ALDS, and we will see him just once unless he pitches on very short rest or relieves. All that said, I was impressed with how the Rays won last night, especially their quickness in the field and on the basepaths. I'm nervous about Sale on the mound tonight, but also think the Sox have a real shot at winning.
  16. Meh. I thought it was a perfect storm. Taylor, just off the IL, was jammed in there with men on 2d and 3d. He's a lefty, so his back was toward Arozarena, plus the Rays hitter was a lefty and saw him coming, plus Arozarena is young and fast and cocky--like Ellsbury in the early years who not only stole home but also scored from 2b on a wild pitch--plus Vazquez did nothing to alert Taylor to take a peek behind him (as righty pitchers have to do with a man on 1b).
  17. Good post. I knew the Rays had better hitting and pitching than the Sox, but what stunned me last night was how much quicker they are in the field (thus 9 singles and no doubles by the team that led MLB in doubles this year) and on the basepaths. I do not think the Sox were "unfocused," but would agree that ERod choked when he walked the leadoff batter in the 1st and again in the 2d inning. Kike fumbled that one hit when getting the ball out of his glove but was not charged with an error. I would love to have won last night, but also know that, when MLB added the second wild card team, thus requiring a wild card game, they did so to give the division winners an edge in the Division Series. When the Sox won their first WS in 2004, they were the wild card team, but didn't have to play a wild card game.
  18. Yes, Pivetta was better than ERod--who choked when he walked the leadoff batters in the the 1st and 2d innings--last night, but ERod was still a good choice to start. This first game was a throwaway because the Rays started their ace and the Sox never scored a run. The Rays pitching and defense dominated the Sox hitters, the same guys who led MLB in doubles this year but ended up with 9 singles last night--and no free passes (Sox pitchers walked 4 Rays). Based on last night's game, it's a very good bet that, had Pivetta started, he would have given up at least 3 runs, so the Sox still would have lost.
  19. Thanks for the heads up.
  20. Wow. Just wow. You have joined the talksox legions who think Sox pitching is the only thing that counts in the ALDS. While I will certainly agree ERod and Pivetta weren't so hot last night, to me the real lesson is that the Rays pitching and defense dominated the Sox. You can't win when you can't score. I expect the same thing tonight until the Sox hitters prove otherwise. Cora is carrying 13 pitchers in the ALDS because he fully expects to use his bullpen early and often. Bad as he was last night, ERod was only allowed to go 1.2 innings, so he only gave up 2 runs. Sale barely did better than that last Sunday vs. the Nats when he went 2.1 innings giving up 2 runs. The good news is that one of Sale's best starts this season was Sep 1 at the Trop when he pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 runs in a game the Sox won, 3-2.
  21. Look, I wanted Houck to stay in that game too, but he was pitching on short rest. Plus in all his starts this season Houck has never lasted more than 5.1 innings.
  22. Cora has 13 pitchers on the roster to 13 position players, so there can be no doubt he will relieve anyone on the mound at almost any moment. I too think Houck will start game 4 on Monday, but agree he could still be used tonight. With 22 year old newby Baz starting and Cash also with 13 pitchers, there can't be much doubt Cash will also have no hesitation in going out to the mound. The Sox need to--I'm searching for the right words here--score some freaking runs!!!! It's pointless to discuss Sox pitching when the hitters are hamstrung by the Rays pitching and defense.
  23. Last night's game thread was a horror show--except for Kimmi's plucky prediction the Sox would win the ALDS in 4 games. The Rays overall are clearly much quicker on the basepaths and in the field. Arozarena's theft of home was merely the coda. I might add that it was the perfect setup: lefty pitcher, just off the IL, who couldn't see behind him, lefty batter who could see Arozarena and get out of his way, an obtuse catcher, and a daring and quick baserunner. Sale tonight, a rest day, then Eovaldi on Sunday and I'm guessing Houck on Monday for game 4. Game 5 on Wednesday will probably be Sale again. Tropicana Field is an abomination.
  24. Come off it. He had two choices, ERod and Pivetta, and ERod has been better the last two months and went 6 shutout innings at the Trop a month ago. Plus he pulled ERod after he had given up just 2 runs. Now it's pretty obvious he is giving Pivetta a chance to show what he can do because there could be more than 3 games. Another thing. Why is all this on Cora and ERod? In case you haven't noticed, the hitters ain't hitting.
