    Schreiber is one heckuva reliever. I mean he was throwing nasty stuff. If closer is important, he's the best choice, and no one else comes close.

    One more time. Refsnyder's dinger doesn't tie the game if Wacha doesn't pitch his guts out for 4 innings after that awful 1st. Wacha done good tonight simply because he didn't quit.

    I have to say this one more time. Everyone complains about Cordero's play at 1b, which is, I agree, not so hot. But I really don't care when he is hitting because you don't actually need a great fielder at 1b very often.

    I was going to quote my negative comments, but I'll quote you instead. Wacha gave up 3 runs in the 1st, and I went ballistic. He's now gone 4 more innings giving up 1 run. He has battled back. He has showed some grit, and in a big game like this that gets major points with me. I might add the defensive outfield stinks. Refsnyder not so bad, but the other two like to, what's that word?--lollygaggle. Early in the Jays game one of their guys hit a single to right center and slowed down going to 1b until he saw how Arroyo was approaching that ball with the utmost caution and minimum aggressiveness. So he took 2b and later scored. The Sox have had some hard hit shots caught, but I care about results--like they are (no surprise here) 0 for 5 with RISP. Indeed, the Jays defense looks very professional, very engaged, and a whole lot faster than our Sox defense.

    Tonight it sure looks as though Jays are hitting away from the shifts and the Sox are hitting into them.

    Nevertheless, the Sox are 2d in the AL in runs scored. So it's not like their offense is bleeding to death.

    Game thread rules. Some whining should be allowed. Yes, I agree Wacha was a great acquisition and has done very well for the Sox this season. But tonight so far he is no better than Seabold was last night.

    Coming into this game, the Sox had scored the 2d most runs in the AL. They also have the 3d best OPS in the AL. So it can't all be Story.

    Sox now almost sure to go 2-7 vs. the Jays--so far. 10 more games to play, including tomorrow. I would love to blame this on Duran and Houck, but they would have made no difference.

    Let's not forget that, as lousy as Wacha was in the bottom of the first inning, our first three hitters in the game stank just as much.

    Here we go. Wacha walks two and throws a changeup down the middle. I swear the Boston Red Sox hitters and pitchers are terrified of the Toronto Blue Jays. 3-0 Jays and we are not out of the first inning.

    Right you are. All those games, including some nice wins, wiped off the boards. Too bad the Yankees wins count, but it's a Yankees fan calling the tune.

    What an absolutely miserable top of the 1st. Refsnyder leads off with a clean single, then Devers takes a called third strike on a very hittable fastball waist high, Refsnyder is thrown out by a mile at 2b for a double play, and JDM, not wanting to be left out of this fiasco, strikes out.
