  1. That was the idea. SoxProspects says he has good command of his pitches, but tonight he did not. Most of those solid hits were off pitches near the center of the zone. That last dinger was high in the zone, but the 2d straight pitch in that location, plus it was no 90 mph, not the 93 mph earlier in the game.
  2. I have always believed that the best time for Sox starter to have a bad night is when the Sox bats are silent. Now that the Jays have a commanding lead, the Sox might score, but the fact is Gausman has dominated them.
  3. I don't know how many first pitch strikes Gausman has thrown, but I think it's a lot.
  4. You must be kidding. Nobody in his/her right mind would ever call a thoroughbred Seabiscuit. War Admiral, maybe. That has a good ring to it.
  5. I think not. Of course, the giant caveat, even against a good pitcher, is that it ain't good pitching if he's getting hit. Tonight Gausman seems to be in complete command.
  6. No reason not to keep Seabold in there to eat some innings. Too bad no one in the bullpen can hit.
  7. I thought Fitzsimmons because he was a very successful trainer and I figured there was a great thoroughbred named Seabold. Meanwhile, the Sox hitting stinks and the Jays' doesn't.
  8. Gausman is enjoying himself entirely too much. Devers, JDM, and Bogey are putty in his hands. Also Story, but he would be anyway. Dugo get Sox 2d hit. Just like Dalbec's, it's with 2 outs. Up comes Story with a man on. And K's again, but this time on 6 pitches--so, progress.
  9. Mostly missing his spots. When he throws what's called for, it works. When he throws sliders near the middle of the zone, he gets hammered for 2 dingers and 3 runs.
  10. Usually I would blame Vazquez's pitch-calling, but not tonight. When Seabold throws what is called for, it works.
  11. Changeup, up in the zone, and hammered right by Devers.
  12. And tonight, only the 1st inning double was low in the zone. The two dingers were off sliders near the middle of the zone. So the control isn't that great. Also very few if any changeups and curves.
  13. 93 so far. Reportedly, he has thrown 95 mph. Interesting top of the 3d after Story pissed in his pants. Dalbec clean single, steals 2b, Duran walks, and up comes our best hitter Devers, who was clearly up there to swing--at all 5 pitches--before grounding out with, wait for it, RISP and 2 outs. So Gausman is on his game, and Seabold is like the little Dutch boy with his finger in the dike. Whoops, there goes a dinger by Springer, his 14th. 2-0 Jays. Slider up in the zone. Followed by a first pitch single up the middle with one out and Guerrero at the plate. Dike looks pretty broken. Another dinger to CF of a slider that was way to hittable.
  14. Story and JBJ both K on 3 pitches. #9, mr hitless, finally breaks the ice. Way to go!
  15. Right now it looks like Seabold is the only Sox player focused on winning. If Vazquez is calling the pitches, he is too.
  16. Very impressive first inning by seabold. BB on close pitches called balls. Double on a slider down and a good swing. Then he strikes out franchise player Guerrero and this years Jays MVP—with a ground in between. Very rare when a rookie does that in his first game. Cool hand Luke. Sox hitters meanwhile look like they need their mommies.
  17. Well, the quotation is presumed to come from Walt Whitman, not exactly a hard-headed realist. Baseball fans over the decades have been willing to root for their teams even when gas, food, or even a place to live/sleep is hard to come by. I do not disagree these are difficult times.
  18. Meh. We're all guessing/hoping. I've read reports his fastball is up to 96mph and that both his slider and his changeup are coming along. Plus of course, he's Chris Sale. We won't really know until he's facing an MLB lineup in a real game. So nothing wrong with doubting. But also nothing wrong with hoping/believing.
  19. Lineup without Duran doesn't look too bad-- Refsnyder RF Devers 3b JDM DH Bogey SS Verdugo LF Story 2B Vazquez C JBJ CF Dalbec 1B
  20. Reality these days is definitely intruding: pandemic, Russia's invasion of Ukraine a possible entry point for WW III, global warming, inflation, red states vs. blue states and all that that implies. Little wonder that FDR allowed MLB to continue during World War II despite so many good players going off to war. Baseball is our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us. You can look it up.
  21. I resent that. It is I, the maxatollah, who is the best of the best, the paragon of paragons, and a really nice person (unless you ask my wife of 58 years). My only complaint about Talksox is that too few of you realize that.
  22. I don't know where you got that 180 IP from, but it does make sense for a young pitcher in his second MLB season and first as a starter. Given his repertoire of good pitches, I would continue to use him as a starter. Cora can always limit the innings, and the point is that 5 innings are a bunch--provided they're good ones--and better value than relief-pitching. I will be happy with whatever Cora decides.
  23. I don't think 2 is enough for a starter. I have read comments that so far Sale's changeup is looking pretty good. I think he needs 3 good pitches and excellent command to be an effective starter. What I will never doubt is his professionalism.
