  1. No etc to it. The Sox have the 2d worst pitching in the AL and the Rays have the 2d best. That's essentially why the Rays have a 74-58 record and the Sox are 67-68.
  2. True. In this case, some credit has to go to the Rays reliever, who threw some excellent pitches. Indeed, we are watching a team with good pitching battle a team with lousy pitching--except for Wacha's quality start. Once the Rays bullpen appeared, scoring was bound to be tough. And now that the Sox bullpen is engaged, holding a 3-2 lead is problematical. That said, the HBP was just weird. On the other hand, it was reasonable to expect Brujan to get a BB. Game now tied, man on 2b with 1 out. Hello, Sox bullpen.
  3. How does he get hit by pitch when his elbow was in the strike zone? And how does the ump explain that to Cora?
  4. So the Sox got a twofer--rest Arroyo, give Casas some MLB burn.
  5. Didn't Arroyo finish the game? The box score says he did.
  6. I like that move by the Rays, walking Devers. They could even walk Story to get to Casas--except that Story grounded out weakly.
  7. To me he's a good infielder who is now hitting. I'd rather see him out there than Casas even though I understand why Casas is getting a look. It's September and the Sox are very unlikely get to the postseason.
  8. Rays helped by the Trop. Again.
  9. Thru 3 1/2 innings the last four Sox hitters are hitless in 8 AB's with 2 K's by Cordero, who's getting better because this time he fouled one off.
  10. After 3, Wacha with 43 pitches and 1 run. Patino with 62 pitches and 3 runs. Thus it becomes the duty of the bottom of the Sox order to give Patino a break--again.
  11. OK, OK. I get it. Let Story be Story.
  12. Lucky hit for Raffy, but aided by the Rays computer telling their centerfielder to play him deep. Story swings at two non-strikes, possibly because he simply didn't notice that Patino's a little wild.
  13. That was a huge k for them--and unfortunately for us. Back to back hittable sinkers that Bogey couldn't touch.
  14. Top of the 3d: Plawecki, then 2d time through the order. Come on, guys. Don't let the Trop get to you.
  15. Ok, that's two really nasty changeups for K's.
  16. The double was off a 91 mph four seamer about waist high. The weak grounder was off a cutter which followed a changeup, two cutters and a sinker.
  17. That second changeup against Walls was much, much sharper than the first one, which hardly broke.
  18. Long bottom of the 1st, of which I missed everything except the 2d out and K and the 3d out. Was Wacha missing his spots, throwing weak stuff, what?
  19. That is one heckuva insight. You could very easily be wrong, but in your favor is the fact that the Yankees drafted him, he's already made a lot of money ($40M), the Yankees have a very rich tradition, including great home run hitters and WS titles, the new Yankees stadium is homer heaven, and Aaron Judge may just be that rare player who isn't worried about the size of his . . . . . . . . contract.
  20. Xander's WAR is 5.3, 9th best in MLB and highest among MLB shortstops, so you judgment is seriously flawed. I agree renewing Bogaerts and Devers is really hard given all the other things to fix, most notably pitching. Another issue for Devers is he will want at least 10 years, and I don't see John Henry signing up for that.
  21. This has become an excellent thread, including everyone I disagree with (and who probably know more than I). Keep it up!!!! Spotrac is nuts even though I entirely agree owners/GMs can do looney tunes stuff--like that JBJ contract. And, lo and behold, he's now playing for the Jays for free (the Sox DFA'd him). His September OPS is .200, and August 12-31 was .456. But he's still pretty good in the field.
  22. Also well written--and with which I have no quarrel.
  23. More on Mookie. In 5+ seasons with the Sox his cumulative WAR was 42, for which he was paid $33M, less that $1M/WAR In his first three seasons of that 12 years, $365M guaranteed contract ($36.5M/year), his cumulative WAR is 14, for which the Dodgers are paying him 36.5 x 3 =$110M or roughly $8/WAR. Mookie's the same age as Bogey and turns 30 in October, so that 12 years lasts until he's around 38 or 39 years old.
