  1. He caught it but the glove hit the ground and it came out. Orioles run is unearned because of Wong's passed ball.
  2. Enns is pretty much mowing the Sox down. Here's hoping the next guy doesn't.
  3. Pretty rotten top of the 2d. Heck, the top of the 1st wasn't so great except for that terrific dinger by Anthony.
  4. All 3 Orioles batters hit the ball hard. Finally Bello throws some breaking ball for the K and 3d out.
  5. Enns was pitching Anthony low, but with a 3-1 count threw a fast ball 6" to a foot above the bottom. Great swing by Anthony who was looking for a ball to hit. I don't think Rafaela's big problem is swinging at bad pitches. I think he's having trouble hitting a round ball with a round bat squarely. He swung at the 2d and 4th pitches, both near the center of the strike zone, and missed the first and popped the 2d up to the catcher.
  6. No doubt he does. My case for Rafaela is a tad different because I begin with the argument that the pitching staff is making these wins possible, and that it behooves Cora to get his best defenders on the field. In the cases of Bregman, Story, Anthony, Duran and Lowe he gets both. For DH he doesn't need fielding. Tonight Cora is going with far and away his best defensive CF and 2B--plus Wong is a good defensive catcher. And Cora isn't giving up much hitting because Abreu is on the IL and both Gonzalez and Narvaez are struggling at the plate. With Abreu out until some unknown date next month, Cora must play Anthony, Duran, and Rafaela in the outfield with Ref and Yoshida as backups and maybe Garcia.
  7. Hamilton's back and the Sox are playing great ball. I think the screwup on the fly to center was that Eaton sprinted for home when the ball was hit and then had to go back to 3b. Apparently he thought there were 2 outs. Either way, it was a screw-up. Sox have proven time and time again they are crappy bunters.
  8. Writ large I think Cora might be thinking of getting the best defensive players out there to support the excellent pitching. Thus is he starting lefty bats against a lefty starter. It helps that Hamilton recently has been hitting and Lowe already is a hitter but not so much vs lefties.
  9. Duran and Yoshida both in. Garcia is out. Can't complain about that. Hamilton for Gonzalez is a huge surprise and suggests Gonzalez is becoming a backup. Looks like Garcia doesn't have much stock either.
  10. Masa's OPS vs lefties is .596. Duran's is .568. But I would be fine with Masa.
  11. Campbell was pushed too early. Mayer was not. His problem was the bad wrist which should have had surgery circa 2022. His hitting wasn't that great but his defense was impressive. He played in just 44 games. What the heck do you mean about offensive talent, that only three can hit? To me the big three are Bregman, Anthony, and Story, but I also like Abreu, Lowe, Duran, Gonzalez, and Ref. Rafaela had 2 excellent months, June and July- OPS's .870 and .852. Narvaez was hitting. Now Wong is. If you want to say the Sox hitting is inconsistent, I completely agree. However, let me remind you that the Yankees have great hitting and were held to 3, 0, and 1 run in the first 3 games at Yankee stadium last week. Good pitching has also shut down the Sox a few times.
  12. Speaking only as a mere mortal, I think the pitching has made this 2025 Sox team--backed up for the first time this century by a pretty good defense. Others can feel free to argue that point.
  13. An astounding road trip--primarily because of Sox pitching. Sox have the edge tonight with Bello, but it would be nice if they could hit the Orioles lefty starter Enns. I don't see Ref on the roster, so expect to see this lineup-- Anthony DH Bregman 3B Story SS Gonzalez 2B Lowe 1B Narvaez C Rafaela CF Duran LF Garcia RF At some point I think Cora is going to want to give Bregman, Story, Rafaela, and Duran a day off. Hamilton can step in for Bregman and Story, Duran for Rafaela, and Anthony for Duran. Injury report says Ref is due back today or tomorrow. If it's today, I make him DH, Anthony LF, and Duran gets the day off. Injury report says Abreu is due back in September and with luck early September. He has right calf tightness. So I guess Garcia gets to stick around until then.
  14. Great observations. My one thought is that it's late August and the better teams are emerging. Goodness knows the Sox have had more ups and downs than the paratroopers in Band of Brothers. The Sox are doing it this year with a bunch of new faces, solid pitching backed up by solid defense, and excellent hitting which has also been inconsistent. Here's an interesting tidbit. Since the ASG the Sox have played 14 home games against the Dodgers, Astros, Royals, Marlins, and Orioles and the average attendance has been about 36,500, That to me is an absolutely stunning number and I expect it to continue to the end of the season. That has to be very good news for JH.
  15. So nice of you.
  16. Other good news is that Hamilton's OPS in August is higher than Gonzalez's. As long as that's true, I think Hamilton will continue to start against righty starters. 600 is as good as any although there are plenty of examples whose hitting ability was obvious almost from the get go. After 2 horrible months, Pedroia took off like a rocket. I think citing 1076 at bats for Rafaela also makes sense, but I cling to the hope he will improve. We already know Anthony's weakness--low pitches, especially low and inside.
  17. Next up, Bello and Crochet. A sweep would be oh so nice--and timely. Sox hitting continues to be suspect, however. Sox have won 5 of 6 road games in which they gave up 3, 0, 1, 7, 3, and 0 runs.
  18. Yankees lead 5-1 and the Jays 4-2, but Twins threatening in the 7th,
  19. Strip out the 3 phony runs and it was a well-;played ballgame.
  20. Orioles feed on MASN shows the Oriole players postgame congratulations for Bradish.
