  1. The final score was 9-1, not 4-1. And Brasier gave up 3 of the 9 runs. I watched the game and was very impressed with the Cardinals pitching, especially the bullpen. If Cora challenges the play at 2b, which I wanted him to do, there is no guarantee the call will be changed because the throw was way ahead of Devers. The espn commentators said it was possible the glove touched Devers outstretched arm.
  2. He could do both—eat innings and ensure his departure. Yes, a white flag. And why not? No hitting, weak pitching, and down 4-1.
  3. Final, 9-1, Cardinals, is a perfect example of a game that was never winnable. It was therefore the perfect game for Casas to make an error, Sox to get just 5 measly hits, Kluber to be so-so (but not a disaster), and the bullpen to cough up 5 runs. It should be, it must be an easy game to forget.
  4. Blame Winck and Jansen for the first two losses, but don't forget that both have been effective this season. Today you can blame Kluber (4 runs) and Bernardino (2 runs) and the lineup (1 run). Brasier was just sent out to eat innings. I didn't see listless today, just an inability to score runs. Kluber was, well, Kluber, just a tad worse than his last 3 starts and not a total disaster. The Cardinals simply had better pitching today. On defense I saw both Yoshida and Dugo make real efforts to catch hits. Yoshida came very close to getting injured, but slid just in time. I thought the throwing error by Casas was egregious but understandable. He forgot to throw to the bag with the pitcher running to first ahead of the runner. It did not cost a run.
  5. What exactly was his job? Kluber gave up 4 runs, Bernardino gave up 2 runs, Brasier gave up 3 runs, and the lineup has scored 1 run in 8 innings. I think Brasier's job was to eat a couple of innings and he did that. 2.1 shutout innings would have been nice, but would have made no difference in this game.
  6. Only bad call in this series was bringing back Jansen yesterday. Winck and Jansen were the right calls Friday but between them gave up 6 runs and the game. Jansen should not have pitched yesterday--and proved it. As for today, it's on Kluber and Bernardino who between them gave up 6 runs while the Sox lineup could only score 1--so far. If the Sox lineup suddenly scores 5 runs, I might change my tune, but I doubt it. And weren't you the one singing the "the Cardinals are finally showing their true colors--they're a solid ball club" song yesterday? Today's game would appear to be a confirmation of that. The loss yesterday was confirmation of Cora's bad choice of sending Jansen back out yesterday after getting blown away Friday night.
  7. Despite my caustic criticism recently, I think the Sox have a pretty decent bullpen. But one thing they don't have and the Cardinals do have is decent lefty relievers.
  8. Kluber's the one who gave up 4 runs. The lineup are the guys who have scored 1 run in 7 innings. Bernardino was the one who loaded up the bases for the Cardinals. Casas made the egregious error on an easy throw to 1st base when he decide to throw at the runner instead of the base. I am far from a Brasier fan and agree with most of the criticism of him. But he was not sent out tonight to save anything. He was sent to get some outs, which he did. Bernardino was charged with 2 runs and got 2 outs. Brasier was charged with 0 runs and got 4 outs.
  9. Not many guys hit a dinger and strike out in the same at bat. Sox players are multifaceted.
  10. I have no complaints about Cora tonight, nor about Friday night. Yesterday, you betcha. Friday night our ace closer was a disaster, and absolutely no blame can be placed on Cora for that. Tonight, with Kluber starting, the Sox needed to score some runs and haven't--so far, anyway.
  11. A perfect night and game for Brasier. Kluber was so-so, the hitting wasn't, Bernardino stunk in relief, and now Casas screws up about as easy a throw as there is--just throw it--a very short throw--over the bag, not 10 yards behind the freaking runner.
  12. Jansen had help. Winck gave up 3 on Friday. Cora insisted on sending Jansen back out yesterday when he had been absolutely killed--3 runs, no outs--the night before.
  13. Meh. I'm perfectly happy blaming Cora for yesterday, but tonight, with Kluber giving up 4, the lineup scoring just 1 run in 5 innings, and Bernardino loading the bases in the 6th, the smart move is not to waste a good arm on a lost cause. That's exactly why Brasier pitched the 9th in Friday night's game. Jansen had already given the game away.
  14. What praise do you see in "not by any means a good start?" My real point was/is that the bullpen loves those 4 runs because they're off the the hook. They don't have to hold onto a lead like they failed to do yesterday and the day before. So, for example, no big deal when Bernardino gives up 2 more to make it 6-1. They can just say, "not our fault tonight. Kluber gave up 4, and the lineup wasn't hitting. Blame them."
  15. 2.2 million acres. Almost as big as chavez ravine.
  16. Good for Kluber. Not by any means a "good start," but also not a disaster--4 runs in 5 innings. Less pressure on the bullpen too because the Sox are behind 4-1. Funny how losing your 3d game in a row can make so many people happy.
  17. The TV commentators think he didn't challenge because the throw was way ahead of Devers and Cora couldn't be sure that glove didn't graze Devers' arm as he reached for 2b. Also, maybe he couldn't get the camera angle we saw.
  18. Looked like Devers was safe, but the last thing the Sox need now is a rally--unless it's for 10 or more runs. So of course no challenge by Cora.
  19. My guess is Cora's pretty happy too because he flat doesn't trust his bullpen. Fortunately for him, especially early in the season, there's a kind of unwritten "7 run rule" for starters getting hit hard. So Kluber can give up 3 more, depending on his pitch count.
  20. Money's still pretty good. In his last three starts he went 6, 5.1, and 5 innings while giving up 1, 3, and 3 runs. Not too bad. Whoops. Cards now up 4-1 on the 2 run dinger. Smiles are breaking out in the Sox bullpen.
  21. We can be pretty sure of one thing about this game. Nobody but nobody in the Sox bullpen wants it to be close. They will be equally happy if either team scores 10 or more runs--and in stark terror if both teams score 10 runs.
  22. Given the outcomes of the last two games, I would like to commend you for starting this thread. Kind of reminds of a speech by Slim Pickens in Dr Strangelove.
  23. This is hands down some of the best baseball analysis I've ever read.
  24. Oh, stop it. In fact, I order you to be ridiculously, insanely optimistic. You and moonslav. Let me be the jerk who whines all the time.
