It's not stupid. We have no say in what other teams do (or our own team for that matter), but that has never stopped us from voicing our opinions on the topic anyway. Isn't that the purpose of message boards?

No argument with that, but I don't like it. I think if a player is going to be enshrined, the honor should be reserved for the truly elite. Of course, what "truly elite" means is open to debate.

While I understand the idea of avoiding surgery if at all possible, I think Tanaka is only avoiding the inevitable. IMO, he should have had the surgery last season. I'm no doctor, but I don't think he's going to make it through this season. I love conspiracy theories, but I don't think there's any contract plot behind prolonging having the surgery. If the Yankees are doing this to benefit themselves at the expense of a player's health, then shame on them.

How long do you think the Yankees will be able continue this offseason's philosophy of not handing out any big contracts? IMO, if the Yanks miss the playoffs again, and the Red Sox win the WS (just speaking hypothetically), I see the Yankees throwing caution to the wind and having another big spending spree next offseason.

I think we all have to take a wait and see approach. None of us knows for sure how this season is going to play out. I agree, it's a difficult team to project because there are several question marks. Not all of those question marks will break in our favor, but certainly some of them will. Knowing which ones will and which ones won't is the tricky part. If I had to put a number of wins on the season at this point, I'd say 88.

True enough, I don't really care. But any reason to tweak the Yankees is a good reason.

That quote about sums up my feelings on the HOF and having numbers retired. These recognitions should be reserved for an elite, small percentage of players for whom, when you hear their names, everyone is in agreement that they belong. If there has to be this much debate over whether a player is deserving or not, IMO, that makes them very good, but not worthy of the award.

I don't know what the criteria are for retiring numbers, but it does seem like maybe they are bestowing that honor to loosely. This is not to knock any of those players, but I've always felt that if an honor is questioned or debated, then that player probably doesn't truly deserve such a high honor. This is similar to Hall of Fame inductees. It lessens the integrity of the award.

I don't think we can carry his weak bat either. The team already has Vazquez, who could show improvement, but will still likely be considered a weak bat. If we had a stronger starting rotation, it might be possible. But as of now, this team is depending on its offense to carry it through many of the games.

Yes, I think it was just coincidence that his struggles began at about the same time that he moved to 3B. Those struggles also coincide with opposing pitchers attacking him differently (more sliders down and away), resulting in Bogaerts becoming less patient at the plate.

So, I made a few posts yesterday and this morning (about an hour ago), and was wondering why I was the only one posting. I logged back in just now, and those posts have disappeared, and all these posts from yesterday that I couldn't see are now here. Was I posting on a phantom board? Weird.

I agree Spud. I don't think that the coaches would have him change an approach that had been so successful for him, but your guess is as good as mine. I'm guessing maybe he just starting pressing a little and became overanxious. The more he struggled, the more he pressed. As you said, he is still very young. IMO, it's normal growing pains for a youngster, and he will continue to learn and improve.

I'm not sure why he would have taken the move to 3rd as a dig. They moved him to 3rd, not because of what he was doing at SS, but because of Middlebrooks' injury and underperformance at 3B. I didn't look at it as a slight toward Bogaerts, but rather as a vote of confidence in him that he could handle it, since he showed some success there the previous year. He showed some signs of breaking out of the slump towards the end of the season. The Sox FO seems to be really high on him. I am optimistic about seeing some big things from him this season.

Fair enough. The point remains though that his move to 3rd is not to be blamed for his slump.

Good read at Fangraphs today on Bogaerts' slump. To me, this indicates that his slump was due to growing pains - his inability to adjust to the pitchers' adjuments, rather than being a result of his unhappiness at being moved to 3rd base, for anyone who blamed his slump on that. http://www.fangraphs.com/community/why-did-xander-bogaerts-stop-walking/

Not trying to diss on Fred, but it is something I'll have to see to believe. I believe he has every intention of not complaining, but whether he can actually do it or not is another story.

Fred, this is something we agree on. I understand the arguments for building a new ballpark, but to me, no matter how nice a new ballpark would be, it wouldn't be the same. I'm obviously not a Yankee fan, but I felt the same way about the old YS. There is just too much history and tradition there.

I know you're talking about a different Rocket, but since you mentioned idols before they turned out to be such jerks, Clemens was my first true baseball idol/crush, before he turned out to be such a jerk.

I also think they have question marks in their rotation. If everything breaks right for them, the rotation will be great. But as with the Sox rotation, the chances of everything breaking right are not good. Someone is likely to be injured or not perform up to expectations. Overall, I have to give them the edge in pitching, but I still think it's their lack of offense that will hold them back. Either way, it will be an interesting spring. I can't wait to get this show started!
