  1. I still disagree cp. I think they are more willing to part with money than with prospects, no doubt. But I do think they have a monetary limit on every player, no matter how badly they want him. But we're all just guessing here.
  2. I just want to say, Pal and User Name, good discussion. Baseball porn.
  3. Papi is not happy about the "one foot in the batter's box" rule. He says that he might run out of money, because he's not going to change his game. It will be interesting to see how long that lasts.
  4. They will do this until they hit panic mode. If they stink again, and especially if the Sox win another WS, they will spend again next offseason. They don't have the patience. It's just like when they spent the 2012 offseason insisting that they were gearing towards getting under the luxury tax, then did a complete 180 in the 2013 offseason.
  5. That still doesn't make sense to me. It's a club option that becomes guaranteed under certain conditions. So, unless Lee is healthy and good enough for the option to vest, the Sox have control over whether to pick it up or not. If he's bad, they would be better off buying him out. I don't see any benefit to the Sox in guaranteeing the option.
  6. Not all veterans can supply leadership. And while you may consider some of those guys veterans, some are still quite young. I think Shields is the type of guy who would perform, while at the same time providing leadership and mentorship to the young guys. So would Hamels, IMO. I agree, performance is what is needed too, but I wholeheartedly buy into the ideas of leadership and mentorship. Part of the leading and mentoring is given through performing. Having a guy to provide that in a rotation is a good thing.
  7. Agreed. Yes, Cano's contract was insane too, but how can the Yankees let their best player (and best free agent) go, yet offer Ellsbury and McCann that much money? Not that I'm complaining.
  8. I agree Fred. My Yankees friends will vehemently disagree with this, but it does seem like the pattern. If the Sox are fortunate enough to win another title this year, all the caution that the Yankees have taken this offseaon will be thrown to the wind.
  9. Well, we'll have to wait and see Fred. I know he has a reputation for having a bad attitude, but people to eventually grow up. Maybe he has actually matured. I'm also guessing that Papi and Pedroia are not going to allow him to become a clubhouse problem. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt.
  10. Nice read. The more I read about him, the more excited I get. Speed is good, but have I mentioned that stolen bases are overrated? LOL But I'm with you, let's get this season started! We need April to get here! I'm sick of cold weather, as we await another snowstorm tonight.
  11. So, the Sox would essentially be paying $60 mil more for 2 less WAR. That's insane!
  12. Iortiz, you keep saying that Hamels or Shields has nothing to do with it, but I think it has everything to do with it. Even though Shields is older, he is proven in the AL East, and he is much less expensive than Hamels, and for one less year. Even though they might both be exiting their primes, the cost/risk for Shields is much lower than the cost/risk for Hamels. You have to take the other factors into account, and can't just look at their ages in a vacuum.
  13. I agree that the cost of obtaining Hamels is too high, and I like the idea of the Sox going younger. That said, I do think it would be a good idea to have a veteran presence in the rotation. This is one of the reasons why I wanted Shields.
  14. Who knows where he'll end up, but the sense that I'm getting is that he will end up at 3B with Panda moving to 1B. That said, I have read that Allen Craig has been impressing so far in ST (I know, it's very early). But if he can bounce back to the form he had a couple of years ago, maybe he is our 1B of the future.
  15. An insane amount of money is what you see the Yankees giving out to many players, prior to this offseason. And they are feeling the brunt of those bad contracts now. What they gave Ellsbury and McCann last year is insane, IMO.
  16. I read today that Moncada's position of choice is second base, for whatever that's worth. And I agree that if Pedroia gets injured this season, Betts is the logical choice to play second.
  17. I'm not sure how guaranteeing the option benefits the Sox though. It's a team option, so if Lee is pitching well, the Sox would pick it anyway. If Lee is injured or he stinks, the buyout would be the cheaper route. Unless they see something that leads them to believe that Lee could bounce back that second year. Otherwise, it just seems like an additional $15 mil that they lose out on.
  18. I'm thinking one on one swap with Philly kicking in a little cash. I know it's only a one year risk, but $37.5 mil is a lot for one year, especially if Lee flat out stinks or gets injured again. Maybe Lee would agree to waive the buyout in order to be traded to a contending team? Then a one on one swap would seem fair to me.
  19. Well, it comes down to what makes the team better as a whole, not what makes the team better at one position. The Sox have certainly set themselves up well as far as versatility goes.
  20. I disagree with that. I think the amount of money, and more particularly, the length of contract, is a big factor in their decisions. The FO is willing to spend, and they realize that usually they will have to overspend to some extent. However, they do have a limit to how much they will overspend. They typically will not reach the "insane" level with contracts.
  21. I just read this about players not being penalized for their rituals, as long as one foot stays in the box:
  22. I wouldn't at all mind Hamels in the rotation. I just think his price tag is too high. The $110 mil I could live with. The prospects on top of that, especially since we've been hearing that Swihart is the starting point, I cannot live with.
  23. I love Napoli. I never knew that he was struggling so badly with the sleep apnea thing. He said he feels like a new man. It will be interesting to see if his new found health can translate into more on field productivity.
  24. Pedroia is one guy I would never bet against. But even if he doesn't have a "big year" offensively, his defense and intangibles make him very valuable to the team.
  25. Who becomes our next 2nd baseman depends on how Pedroia holds up. If he plays at a productive level for the length of his contract, then both Betts and Moncada will have found different positions by then. I read something where Moncada's arm did not look that great at 3B, but that he looked very good playing 2B.
