This is what I usually do - pick teams that are high seeds. I try to throw in a couple of "upsets", because those always happen. Not that I have any idea of what would really be an upset and what wouldn't. I can't go with prettiest uniforms because I don't know what their uniforms look like. I think I'll go with Calipari this year, because I'm assuming it rhymes with calimari.

Or maybe they think Farrell is the guy who can get Masterson, Porcello, Miley, and Kelly to reach their potential. Buccholz is just an enigma. I almost think that he should not be allowed to make any decisions on the mound when there are runners on base. Don't let him think, just do what the catcher calls. IIRC, the Sox did this for a while with not letting him throw to first unless it was called from the dugout, and it seemed to help.

I agree with your first statement, to an extent. I think the bigger problem was not having a plan B, should those youngsters struggle, which they obviously did. Even so, the likelihood of all 3 of them struggling as badly as they did was small. Add to that, the struggles of most of the rest of the line up, and it's almost a perfect storm of what could go wrong.

The use of analytics and technology is most definitely a part of the skillset in scouting. A scout equipped with the knowledge of the analytics and technology and knows how to use this information to enhance his scouting will do a better job than a scout who doesn't. Although we agree that both are important and have their places in baseball, we are obviously never going to agree on the relative importance of scouting versus analytics.

The Bobby Valentine year does not count. As for last year, I challenge anyone to tell me truthfully that they knew the offense was going to be as bad as it was. We knew there would be a dropoff from 2013, but it should have been good enough to keep the team in contention. The team that was assembled was good. The abysmal offense was something nobody could have foreseen.

It will be an interesting year. Unfortunately, I think the FO is in a no-win situation from the viewpoint of some people. If the team fails, they will be endlessly bashed for not having a strong pitching staff. If the team is successful, it will be because the stars aligned perfectly or some voodoo magic like that, not because the FO actually did a good job. Truth be told, the way they built this team would not be my preferred method of building teams. That said, I am happy with the overall job that they did.

When you lose weight, you don't just lose mass in your abdomen. You lose it in your arms and legs also. It's interesting that CC stated that he was too skinny last year. He came to camp 10 pounds heavier this year.

The Sox have extended Farrell through 2017, with an option for 2018. Ben really likes this guy. Farrell is no Francona, but I like him.

Nothing is fool-proof as far as translating into on-field success. Even a team of all the best scouts could not assure that. I know some will disagree, but I think the FO's track record speaks for itself. We've been one of the most successful franchises this century, and are set up well to continue being one of the most successful for the foreseeable future.

That's all I'm saying. It may or may not have much of an impact, but it's something that is certainly worth looking into. And it's something that more and more teams are buying into, so I'm guessing that there is something to it.

If you wait to see whether an idea works or not, any edge that you might have had is gone. By that time, every team is on board with the idea, and every team is back on an even playing field in regard to that tool.

I think upgrading the quality of scouts at the expense of technology/analytics, would do more harm than good. IMO, most good scouts tend to see the same qualities/talents in players. It's the analytics that give a scout the advantage over another scout, not a better eye.

I am not in favor of a pitch clock. I can live with these rules that they are planning to incorporate this season. As Spud says, the commercial breaks have to be shorter and especially less frequent. The 150 pitching changes in the last 3 innings of a game take FOREVER. -
The Sox didn't sign Panda to play Gold Glove defense. They know what they are getting in him defensively. It's not like he completely stinks defensively. If the loss of 30-40 pounds is going to result in a loss of power, then any gain that he sees defensively would probably not offset the offensive loss. I agree with Jacko as well - Pablo is not likely to age well. Although I'm excited to have him on the team, I was not crazy about his signing either. I would have preferred Headley. That said, my point was that it's not like it's any surprise that he's fat. That's what he is, everybody knew this going in, so why all the media attention on how big he is, like it's new news or something?

I think all teams already employ who they believe are the best scouts. No one is advocating replacing scouts, or even lessening their roles or their importance. If the technology and the stats can give your team an edge, it would be negligent of any team not to use them. Why are these "flavor of the day" ideas copycat-ed? Because they work. So, if team chooses not to employ them, then that team is at a disadvantage. You really seem to be hung up on the idea that these tools come from MBAs. Just because a person is not a "baseball person" does not mean that he/she can't help a team find ways to improve.

It's not like all baseball players are the epitomy of chiseled athletes anyway. He may not be as big girthwise as Panda, but Big Papi is, well, big.
