It's frustrating to watch a guy strike out in those situations, no doubt. However, all other things being equal, even counting for the times when a sac fly scores a run, a batter who makes an out by striking out is not hurting his team significantly more than a batter who makes an out putting the ball in play.

I didn't watch him bat much when he was with the Cards, but I'm guessing that being traded to the Sox did nothing to help his already shattered confidence, which in turn, didn't help his performance for the short time he was with us.

As I've posted a couple of times, I would never bet against Pedroia. As far as Craig is concerned, he might have said that his foot injury had nothing to do with it, but he is saying something different this spring. There is probably a degree of decline going on with Craig, but I'm hopeful that the bulk of his struggles last season were due to injury. He was also the victim of an unusually low BABIP for him, and that should normalize this year. There is reason to be hopeful.

That's the bottom line right there. None of us knows for sure who has how much influence when it comes to the decisions. But that's not going to stop me from ranting against Lucchino when I get the chance.

First of all, I fully admit that I have a dislike/bias against LL. This dislike of LL goes hand in hand with my opinion that Theo is God. Is that slanting my opinion? Of course it is. I said that I had no proof. But no one has yet to give me proof otherwise either. Knowing Theo's philosophy about building a franchise, and knowing that Theo and Lucchino often butted heads over their differences in philosophies, and knowing that Lucchino's emphasis is on the business aspect of things, lead me to believe that when bad things happen with this team, Lucchino's influence is likely the culprit. Exhibit A is Bobby Valentine. Exhibit B is Carl Crawford. Exhibit C is the Theo/Gorilla Suit Escapade. Yes, I know that Theo accepted responsibility for the Crawford signing, but he would have never made that move without Lucchino's influence.

I'm sure that Henry gave his okay on it, but I am convinced that it was Lucchino's idea and influence. I have no proof of this other than anecdotal evidence (which yes, we know is a weak argument), but nor do I have any proof to convince me otherwise.

I don't think Napoli's offense is underrated, at least not by those who understand that his Ks are just not that big of a deal. I think Ogden is just trying to say that Craig can be that good, if he's healthy.

Good points sk. I'm not defending the FO's initial offer because I think it was ridiculously low, but there is some rationale as to why they made it.

I would agree that the pitchers are more responsible for the slow pace of the game than the batters. I do not want to see a pitch clock implemented though. Did you see Bill Lee's response to Papi's rant? LOL Anyway, it looks like Papi is going to have to abide by the rules. After the 6th offense, he could be suspended. -

That's a fair question. The initial offer was certainly ridiculously low. I honestly think they just messed up, and put too much stock into Lester's willingness to take a discount. In fairness to the FO though, they stated that the initial offer to Lester was in line with Beckett's extension in 2010, and though the market has changed since then, I can see some logic to that reasoning. Either way, I think Henry personally visiting Lester is a lot to go through just for "show".

I think the Sox' final offer to Lester was more than fair, and I wouldn't consider it below market. It's possible that the Sox really didn't want him back that badly, I just don't think it's fair to say that it's obvious that they didn't want him back because they didn't match the Cubbies' offer. There comes a point where you have to say that the offer is too much.

Of course they could have beat the Cubs offer if they wanted to. But the fact that they didn't beat that offer doesn't mean that they didn't want Lester back. It could mean that they deemed the price tag had just gotten too high.

We can go back and forth about this all day, but we'll never know for sure. I think they would have loved having Lester back under their terms. I know you and many others disagree. It's all speculation on both of our parts. I am sure the FO has both a short and long term plan in place. We don't know the full extent of that either - again it's mostly speculation. I would also be very surprised if Victorino is around next year, with the glut of outfielders that we have. Napoli is more of a possiblity IMO, but there we'll have to wait to see how things play out this season.
