I don't disagree with either either statement. -
The Rays are in the middle of the pack in the AL in most offensive categories. They make up for it with good defense and good baserunning.

As I've posted before, as much as I'd like to count the Yankees out, I just can't. There is too much of the season left and things can change quickly in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to the series right out of the All Star break.

Deferrals or not, I have to disagree with the statement that this was a team friendly deal, given the uncertainty of the COVID situation. I am sincerely still very much surprised that the Dodgers gave Mookie such a large contract, IMO, bidding against only themselves.

I mostly agree with this. I think the Sox are pretty well set too. That said, acquiring the right player can affect performance in a positive way. Acquiring or not acquiring players at the deadline can also send one of two opposing messages to the team, either the FO thinks the team is good enough as is, or the FO doesn't think the team is good enough to warrant spending resources to make improvements. With the Sox being in 1st place, I would think the former would be the message that is sent, but getting the team to buy into this is key. Cora is very good at that type of thing.

The bottom line is that running a baseball team requires a lot of patience. Decisions cannot be made based on small sample sizes, particularly when there is no sense of urgency.

I get it. There is always room for improvement, and I understand fans' desire to improve the team. However, I think there is a lot more that goes into these decisions than what the fans are considering. As has been posted many times, I trust that Bloom and Cora know what they are doing.

Just read an article about team defense. The Rays are #1 in baseball in terms of DRS with +59. That is approximately 6 games that the Rays have won on defense alone. The importance of fundamentals.

Of course it depends on cost. Personally, I don't think it's worth going over the tax line or trading away top players for a rental player in the hopes that said player will help us win the WS. I prefer that we stay on course this year with our long term goals. We have a team that is good enough to get into postseason. As I always say, the playoffs are too much of a crapshoot.

The Yankees have also cost themselves 3+ games defensively (according to DRS) and baserunning (MLB worst at -14.6 runs).

Cora is a guy who is not going to chase wins, as he puts it. I don't always like the line ups that Cora puts out there, but he always has the season long goals in mind. Can't argue with that.

Bolster the chances of making the playoffs or bolster the chances of winning the WS? I think that getting Sale back and reinforcing the BP and bench would be enough to bolster our chances of making the playoffs. Making a move geared toward bolstering our chances in the postseason is not wise.

There is no reason to avoid the tax line if we acquire a player who will also help us in the future. IMO, it would not be very wise to exceed the tax line for a rental player.

Bloom said something along the lines of him looking forward to wheeling and dealing before the deadline. Not sure what to make of that, but I still don't think there will be anything that is going to surprise us.

IMO, the only way we get a 'significant' addition is if that addition will be with the team for at least 2-3 years after this year. I don't think Bloom will make a significant rental player addition. He is all about the long term goals and sustainability. Sale and Houck should shore up our rotation, which in turn should also help our BP. Brasier? Duran will likely contribute at some point. Maybe Franchy and Dalbec become a platoon at 1B? I think the likely additions will be more along the lines of reinforcements rather than what we would view as game changers.

I wouldn't not count it, but at the same time, things might have been a lot different had the season been its regular length. There's a good chance the Dodgers don't win the WS.

I know I posted this before, but if I were Mookie's mother, I would have encouraged him to take the deal. No second thoughts.
