  1. Perez will typically keep the team in the game. He's had 7 outings in which he lasted 4 innings or less, which obviously is not ideal, but again, he will usually give the team a chance to win. I think he's worth $6M.
  2. Here's a fun tweet from Tangotiger that makes me happy: Nothing is ever totally random. The job of a saberist is not to find "if something exists". No, job of a saberist is to establish the extent that the thing exists. e.g. : Finding clutch exists is irrelevant. Are we talking about 1 point of wOBA or 10 points or 50 points?
  3. There may or may not be a better pitcher than Perez available for $6M, but that price is really not unreasonable. As of now, I agree on Richards.
  4. Absolutely. You're not going to sign the Mookie Betts of the world, but you can get very, very good second tier type players.
  5. I agree, but he's also cooled off a bit lately. Who else makes sense?
  6. As the saying goes, you can never have enough pitching.
  7. We will have to wait to see how he performs the remainder of the season. He seems to be reinventing himself to some degree of success so far. He pitched well through 5 innings last night, against a very tough line up. The 3rd time through the order is a very real thing for starter.
  8. No doubt, I wouldn't want to go over by $53M, nor would I have ever signed Mookie to that deal. I'm talking about their general philosophy. They have sustainability, financial flexibility, and a strong farm. Yes, that's the model that I hope Bloom emulates.
  9. This is my preference. I would rather pay a higher AAV for fewer years than the other way around. I'm good with 2-3 year deals, even if we overpay a little in dollars.
  10. Didn't I read a comment from Cora that said that they would not call up Sale until he was fully stretched out? At any rate, all reports on Sale so far are extremely encouraging! Woot!
  11. I just hate giving up on players after such a short time at the major league level. His K/BB ratio is rather alarming, no doubt about that. He may or may not be able to improve upon that, but I would like to give him a longer look. When he makes contact, he hits the ball hard, and usually a long way. I get that 1B should be a position that provides more offense, but I am really fine with Dalbec hitting 9th. The team can hide him there if the rest of the offense does what it's capable of doing.
  12. Yeah, they're actually starting to tick me off. LOL
  13. I do dislike big spending. And they are over this year after being under for several years. Friedman has built that team to the point where they have year after year sustainability, a strong farm, and financial flexibility.
  14. This is a definite red flag for me. However, with robot umps apparently coming soon, framing and receiving won't be nearly as big a deal, which is very sad.
  15. In those 3 series losses, 4 of our 6 losses were by 1 or 2 runs. That rain shortened loss to the Yankees is Exhibit A of a game lost due to random factors. They are still losses, but that's a much better sign for the Sox than if we had lost those games by 5 or more runs.
  16. I think he's talking about blockbuster type rentals. He won't trade any top prospects or go over the luxury tax for a rental.
  17. Bloom sounds like a very smart man.
  18. Fans and media tend to overreact with every ebb and flow of the season. IMO, the Sox will be fine with a few minor tweaks, with the knowledge that Sale should be returning soon. As far as whether we are better than other teams, I like to look at run differential and Pythagorean W-L as a gauge. In that regard, the Sox have been a bit on the fortunate side while the Jays have been unfortunate. I think it's going to be a very tight race going down the stretch.
  19. It is so frustrating when this team doesn't hit and score runs, especially against a so-so pitcher. Beginning with the Oakland series, through the Yankees series, the team has slashed .215/.295/.359/.653, scoring 3.75 runs/game. The team probably needed some kind of spark or shake up. I was completely okay with the Sox not calling Duran up, but I am equally okay with them calling him up. Similarly, I'm not fully on board with Cora's line up decisions, but I'm also okay with his decision to shake things up. One game or series doesn't tell us anything, but it was nice to see our offense come back with a vengeance last night. Despite our recent struggles, the Sox will be fine.
  20. While winning the WS is the bottom line, what happens in the playoffs is largely a crapshoot. We often judge a GM by how many rings he has won, but I don't that's necessarily the fairest way to rate a GM.
  21. Look at what Friedman has done with the Dodgers. My hope is that Bloom will follow in those footsteps.
  22. I am not a fan of the argument that owners should be willing to pay whatever because they can afford to do so.
  23. I don't see Chaim being foolish with any contracts, even with organizational cornerstones. Will he extend players like Bogaerts and Devers? Yes, but IMO, it will have to be at least a somewhat team friendly deal. I don't think he'll pay full market price.
  24. I am a Dalbec fan, and personally, I'd give him more time. That said, if Cora and Bloom think it's time to send him down, then I trust their judgment. It seems at the very least, he will become a platoon player. I'm not sure that would be better for him than playing everyday in AAA.
