Having a lot of LOBs and RISP is a good sign for a team, whether they are able to get those runs in or not. "Clutch hitting", unfortunately, is not a sustainable skill. "Cluster luck", clustering a bunch of hits together to score a lot of runs is just that - luck. It is also not a sustainable skill. Nor is it a sustainable skill for a pitcher to be able to scatter hits. I'm not saying that getting hits for a batter or avoiding hits for a pitcher is not a skill. I'm saying that the clustering of such hits is not a skill. -
It's interesting that some thought that the trade for Ottavino was not a good trade because the Sox picked up $8M of his salary. Ottavino @ $8M is not a good deal (not to mention that we also receive German in that deal), but Barnes @ $18.75M/2yrs is a steal.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the Sox paid full market price either. Barnes gave the Sox a home team discount so that he could stay with the Sox. Good deal for both sides. As an aside, I've always liked Barnes, but after reading his comments regarding this extension, he has gone up several notches on my likability and respectability scale.

No, it's not. Garrett Whitlock is a steal. Barnes likely left some money on the table, but this is also a very fair deal for him. Good deal for both sides.

Well that's the thing about relievers. They are so unpredictable. I have never been on board with giving large or long term contracts to relievers. This is a good deal.

I agree that we won't see any blockbuster deals before the deadline. I certainly expect him to spend and exceed the luxury tax limit in the near future. We have the best of both worlds in Bloom - low budget smarts and a large budget payroll.

I wouldn't say it's a steal, but it's a deal I can live with and I'm happy that we will have Barnes with the team for the next 2 seasons. Good deal for both sides.

Of course they can afford the deal. So could the Red Sox. That's not a good reason to outbid yourself.

I am sure that the upcoming ASB factored into Boone's decision. I still find it interesting that there was no one in the pen that Boone had enough confidence in to close out that game, and preferred to instead put Cole at some risk. That's more of a sprint type decision rather than a marathon decision. Granted, the Yankees are feeling a sense of urgency.

No, I do not. At the very least, at the time the deal was given, I think Mookie would have accepted less. There were a lot of concerns at the time about what free agent contracts would look like. There was speculation that free agents like Mookie might take a one year deal to ride out the pandemic.

That's a plausible theory. So the lesson is that they shouldn't have messed with the baseballs. The good news, I guess, is that the crackdown on the sticky stuff seems to be having the effect of increased offense, which MLB so greatly desires.

I would not be surprised if Bloom surprises us with a move that none of us were expecting. (Is it possible to not be surprised at being surprised? LOL) Again, we don't know half of what the FO knows. I trust Bloom.

Making the change midseason, for one. Regardless of whether Manfred said he would do it or not, why make the change in the middle of a season?

Ha. I thought the same thing. Great outing by Cole. It's interesting that Boone chose to stay with Cole and his season high 129 pitches rather than go with someone in the pen.

Cora and Bloom know a lot more about baseball than any of us do, especially about their current roster. That doesn't mean that they won't make mistakes. That also doesn't mean that we can't debate or question their decisions. But when it comes down to it, I am going to trust their decisions a lot more than I would trust anyone's opinion on this forum. That is not meant to be a knock on anyone's knowledge or opinions, it just the way it is. We don't have half the information that they do.

It's remarkable how little starting pitching depth we have needed this season. Almost none, outside of ERod at the beginning of the season. I don't think anyone will be blown away by any midseason moves that Bloom makes, but I do think he will make some solid additions.

Bloom has the long term outlook of the team in mind whenever he is making moves. At the same time, while sustainability is his priority, he has done a very good job of putting together a competitive team this year. I don't think he will 'piss away' this season. He seems to know how to find that balance. IMO, he will find a way to improve the team before the deadline. It won't be a splashy move, but that doesn't mean it won't be a good move.
