The good news is that a badly as the plan has failed this year, Ben did not sacrifice the future of the team. He stuck to his guns in terms of not giving up his prized prospects, and we still have those players for years to come. The team is also in decent shape financially.
I know most people hate the Hanley, Pablo, and Porcello contracts. However, none of those contracts are outrageous. Pablo's was the only one out of the three that I didn't like, but even his is salvageable. None of those contracts have put a strap on the team where they can't go out and get the pitching that they need.
If those players continue to perform like they did this year, then yes, they will become a burden. But like you said, players can have bad years and then turn it around the following year. I expect better performances from all three going forward.
